Puppeteer is a better fit when your Node.js application already controls a browser and needs to manage navigation or page state before printing. Neither is a universal winner: rendering quality, access to the source page, operational workload, security requirements, and cost at your expected volume should decide. This is a documentation-based comparison, not a hands-on rendering benchmark.
PDFCrowd vs. Puppeteer at a glance
| Question | PDFCrowd | Puppeteer |
|---|---|---|
| How does it generate the PDF? | A hosted HTTP API or official SDK accepts a URL, HTML string, or uploaded HTML file/archive and returns PDF data. PDFCrowd API and HTTP API. | A Node.js library controls a browser page; navigate to the page, then call page.pdf(). Puppeteer PDF guide. |
| Who operates the renderer? | PDFCrowd operates it; your application makes requests and handles the returned PDFs. | Your team operates the browser runtime and its deployment compatibility. Standard Puppeteer installs a compatible Chrome for Testing browser and headless shell; puppeteer-core does not download Chrome. Puppeteer installation. |
| Where is control strongest? | API settings include paper and margin options, headers and footers, custom CSS and JavaScript, readiness, viewport, and PDF requirements such as PDF/A and tagged output. Check the current API reference for the exact supported settings. | Browser automation provides direct control over navigation and page behavior. Page.pdf() uses print CSS by default; select screen media separately when needed. Puppeteer Page.pdf(). |
| What about cost and speed? | Current plan prices and performance against Puppeteer are not established here; request limits apply. | The library is not a hosted conversion plan, but infrastructure and engineering operations have costs. Equivalent throughput and performance figures are not established by the documentation cited here. |
Choose PDFCrowd when a hosted conversion API fits
PDFCrowd suits applications that can submit a URL or HTML content to a service and would rather not package, upgrade, and run a browser renderer themselves. Its API supports conversion from a reachable URL, an HTML string, or uploaded HTML files and archives, and it offers official client libraries. The HTTP API is documented at pdfcrowd.com/api/html-to-pdf-http/.

Check source access and data handling first
In URL mode, the page must be reachable from PDFCrowd’s servers; a remote service cannot fetch your application’s localhost. For local or otherwise inaccessible content, send the HTML and associated files instead, using the supported upload approach. If your page is private, session-specific, internal, or sensitive, verify the required authentication and data path before choosing. The documentation cited here does not establish every authentication scenario or justify a broad privacy comparison.
Account for documented limits
PDFCrowd’s HTTP API documentation, checked October 3, 2026, states a maximum upload of 300 MB and that processing is stopped after 60 seconds. Request-rate and concurrency limits depend on the license. Confirm the current limits for your account before building a high-volume or bursty workflow; do not treat those figures as a throughput guarantee. See the HTTP API documentation.

Choose Puppeteer when PDF output belongs inside browser automation
Puppeteer is a stronger fit when your Node.js application already launches browser pages and needs the PDF step to happen within that workflow. It gives your code control of navigation and page state before printing. The basic sequence is to launch a browser, open a page, navigate, wait for the content your page needs, and save the result of page.pdf(). Puppeteer’s guide says, “For printing PDFs use Page.pdf().” Read the PDF generation guide and the Page.pdf() API.
Install the browser deliberately
With the standard puppeteer package, installation downloads a compatible Chrome for Testing browser and headless shell. puppeteer-core does not download a browser, so your deployment must provide and manage one. That choice affects container images, operating-system packages, browser upgrades, and compatibility. The Puppeteer system requirements page showed version 25.12.0 and a Node.js minimum of 22.12+ when checked October 3, 2026; both the version and minimum can change, so confirm the current system requirements when deploying.

Understand print media versus screen media
page.pdf() renders using print CSS media by default. If the site looks different in a browser screen view and you need screen styling in the PDF, call page.emulateMediaType('screen') before printing. This changes the selected CSS media; it does not guarantee that a site’s screen layout will paginate well on paper. Test the actual page and adjust its print styles where needed.

Operational trade-offs and common failure cases
PDFCrowd cannot reach the source page
Symptom: URL conversion fails for a development or private page. Likely cause: the URL is not accessible from PDFCrowd’s servers; localhost refers to the remote service’s environment, not your machine. What to do: provide the HTML and required assets using the documented content or file-upload route, or make the page available through an approved access path. Verify security and data handling before sending sensitive content.

A PDF is cut off or styled differently than expected
Symptom: page breaks, colors, fonts, or layout differ from the browser view. Likely cause: print media rules, paper dimensions, margins, or delayed page content differ from the assumptions used for conversion. What to do: set and test the relevant print or PDF options in the selected product, ensure dynamic content is ready before capture, and inspect multiple pages of output.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Puppeteer fails after deployment or an upgrade
Symptom: the browser will not launch in a container or a previously working job fails after dependencies change. Likely cause: the deployment lacks required system packages, the managed browser is incompatible with the installed package, or puppeteer-core has no supplied browser. What to do: follow the current installation guidance and system requirements, pin compatible versions deliberately, and test the production image after browser updates.

PDFCrowd jobs exceed limits or encounter throttling
Symptom: a conversion is stopped or requests fail under load. Likely cause: processing exceeds the documented cutoff, uploads exceed the maximum, or request/concurrency limits for the license are reached. What to do: reduce input size or page complexity where possible, control concurrency, and confirm the applicable account limits before scaling. Do not assume retries will resolve a hard processing limit.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Puppeteer itself make the PDF from a URL?
Puppeteer controls a browser page in Node.js; your code navigates to the URL and calls page.pdf() to produce the PDF.
Can PDFCrowd convert a local HTML file?
Its HTTP API supports sending HTML and files; URL mode specifically requires a URL reachable from PDFCrowd’s servers.
