For a sharper PDFCrowd HTML-to-PDF result, choose image_dpi for the document’s destination, keep jpeg_quality high unless file size is a constraint, and use source images with enough detail. PDFCrowd’s image_dpi setting can downsample images, but it cannot make a low-resolution image sharper by upscaling it.
Choose image resolution for the PDF’s destination
In PDFCrowd’s HTML-to-PDF API, image_dpi controls the resolution of embedded images. Higher values retain more image detail and generally increase file size; lower values reduce both. PDFCrowd’s undated API reference suggests these values by use case:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
| Use | image_dpi |
What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Professional printing | 300 | PDFCrowd’s recommendation for print output; not a guarantee that every source image will look sharp at print size. |
| Everyday documents | 150 | PDFCrowd’s suggested middle ground for ordinary documents. |
| Screen-only viewing | 96 | PDFCrowd’s suggested resolution for documents viewed on screen. |
| Web distribution | 72 | PDFCrowd’s suggested lower-resolution option when smaller files are useful. |
| Preserve source resolution | 0 | PDFCrowd says this preserves the source resolution rather than downsampling. |
These are PDFCrowd’s use-case suggestions, not universal sharpness thresholds. The setting only downsamples: as PDFCrowd’s HTML-to-PDF parameter reference puts it, “Note that this only downscales – it will not upscale low-resolution images.” If a source image is already small or blurry, increasing image_dpi will not restore missing detail. Check the original image and, where possible, use a higher-resolution source.

The jpeg_quality option controls JPEG compression and file size. PDFCrowd documents a default of 100 and an accepted range of 1–100. For image fidelity, keep it at 100 unless reducing file size is important. PDFCrowd suggests 70–85 for web distribution; it cautions that 50–60 favors smaller files over clarity and that values below 60 can cause blockiness and color banding.

- Prioritize image quality: use 100.
- Need a smaller web PDF: consider PDFCrowd’s suggested 70–85 range and inspect the result at its intended viewing size.
- Avoid aggressive compression for important images: values below 60 can visibly degrade images.
Resolution and JPEG quality address different losses: image_dpi governs downsampling, while jpeg_quality governs JPEG compression. Adjust only what you need to meet the destination and file-size requirement.
Preserve transparency unless you want the page background behind it
By default, convert_images_to_jpeg is none, preserving source image formats. If you choose a JPEG conversion mode, understand how it handles transparency:
opaqueconverts only images without transparency.allalso converts transparent images. JPEG does not support transparency, so transparent regions take the PDF page’s background color and may look different from the source.
Use none to keep original formats, or opaque if you want JPEG conversion without converting transparent images. Choose all only when replacing transparent areas with the page background is acceptable. The available modes are documented in PDFCrowd’s HTML-to-PDF parameter reference.

Check which conversion workflow you are using
Several PDFCrowd products and conversion directions expose image-related options, but their settings are not interchangeable.
HTML to PDF
Use image_dpi to control embedded-image resolution, along with jpeg_quality and, if needed, convert_images_to_jpeg. These are the relevant controls when turning a web page or HTML into a PDF.
PDF to HTML
If the output is HTML extracted from a PDF, PDFCrowd’s troubleshooting guidance distinguishes page scale from image resolution: adjust scale_factor for the overall page scale and dpi for image rendering resolution. Do not apply the HTML-to-PDF image_dpi advice to this reverse workflow. If images are missing, check the image mode and preserve the relative paths of extracted resources when using separate files. See the PDF-to-HTML documentation.

- FAST PRINT SPEEDS: Print up to 19 pages per minute.
- COMPACT DESIGN: Space-saving, compact design fits anywhere in your home, school or small office.
- WIRELESS CONNECTIVITY: Print from almost anywhere in your workspace using your compatible mobile device.
- PAPER CAPACITY: Up to 150 sheets.
- SUSTAINABILITY: Uses less than 2 watts in Energy Saver mode.
WebSave image output
For screenshot images rather than PDFs, PDFCrowd’s WebSave documentation shows separate controls: output_format, screenshot_width and jpeg_quality. Its example uses JPG, width 1600 and quality 85; those example values illustrate configuration and are not universal PDF settings or a guaranteed optimum. See WebSave as Image documentation.
Practical settings by priority
- Decide where the PDF will be used. Start with PDFCrowd’s documented
image_dpisuggestion for print, everyday documents, screen viewing or web distribution; use0if preserving source resolution is the priority. - Check the source images. Replace low-resolution or already-blurry assets where possible; the converter cannot upscale them into detail.
- Set JPEG quality deliberately. Keep
jpeg_qualityat 100 for quality-critical output. Lower it only when the smaller file is worth the compression loss. - Review transparency behavior. Keep source formats or use
opaqueunless you intend transparent regions to take the page background color underall. - Confirm the output visually. Inspect important images at the size they will be read or printed. PDFCrowd’s recommendations do not guarantee identical results for different source images and layouts.
Troubleshooting blurry or missing images
The PDF is blurry even at a high DPI
Check the source image first. A high image_dpi value does not add detail to a low-resolution source. Also confirm that you are converting HTML to PDF; for PDF-to-HTML, the relevant image-rendering control is dpi, not image_dpi.
Images look blocky or show color bands
Check jpeg_quality. PDFCrowd warns that settings below 60 can cause blockiness and banding. Raise the value, up to the documented maximum of 100, if clarity matters more than file size.

Transparent images have a solid background
Check whether convert_images_to_jpeg is set to all. JPEG cannot retain transparency, so the transparent areas take the PDF page background color. Use none or opaque when that change is unwanted.
The extracted HTML has the wrong overall scale
If the direction is PDF-to-HTML, PDFCrowd’s troubleshooting table points to scale_factor for page scale and dpi for image resolution. Adjust the setting that matches the symptom; they solve different problems.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsImages are missing in PDF-to-HTML output
Check the image mode and, when resources are output as separate files, keep their relative paths intact. PDFCrowd’s PDF-to-HTML documentation describes these troubleshooting considerations.

If your goal is a clean screenshot of a web page rather than a PDFCrowd conversion, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-call screenshot API. It can return PNG, JPEG or WebP images, or a PDF, and its API accepts a URL in a GET request. The example below saves a WebP screenshot:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters and setup. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and each response reports the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
