Use browser printing when a person prints a live commerce page and print-specific styling can meet the layout needs. Generate a PDF when the business needs a reusable file to save, distribute, archive, or print later. Neither option is inherently more accurate or less expensive: choose by workflow, document reuse, layout requirements, and supported devices.
What the two approaches mean
Browser printing
Browser printing starts with an HTML page, such as an order summary or packing slip, styled for paper and sent through the browser’s print workflow. CSS print rules can hide screen-only elements and adjust page dimensions, orientation, and margins using @page. See MDN’s guide to printing with CSS.
Generated PDF
PDF generation creates a file from commerce data and a layout or template. The file can be saved or shared separately from the page that supplied the data. Adobe Commerce, for example, supports individual invoice PDFs and batch invoice output; Adobe PDF Services describes generating business documents from templates that combine fixed content with recipient-specific data.
These are not always competing end-to-end workflows. A system can generate a PDF and then use a browser or platform print dialog to put it on paper. Shopify’s POS Print API accepts HTML and PDF sources, and its documentation notes that PDF printing behavior varies by platform.

For browser workflows, Shopify recommends a URL designed specifically for printing and testing across PDF output and physical printers. Do not assume identical output across browsers or printers without testing the actual deployment: the cited documentation describes print controls and platform behavior, not a controlled cross-browser or cross-printer comparison.
How commerce platforms handle documents
Adobe Commerce
Adobe Commerce requires an invoice record to exist before it can be printed. Its documentation describes printing an individual invoice or batching invoices into PDF output, as well as adding a high-resolution logo to a print-ready invoice. Shopify
Shopify’s Help Center covers printing order summaries and packing slips and points to the Order Printer app for more customized branded templates. For developer-built print actions, Shopify supports print-oriented HTML pages and PDF sources. Its POS documentation describes platform-dependent PDF behavior, including a different Android flow from iOS and desktop. WooCommerce
WooCommerce documents a plugin for generating and managing invoices, receipts, delivery notes, packing slips, and credit notes, with configurable templates. Adobe PDF Services is an API example for businesses that need customized documents generated from templates and dynamic recipient-specific data. Its documentation describes the capability; it does not mean every commerce store needs an external generation service. See Adobe’s Document Generation API documentation.

Implementation checks before choosing
- Confirm the document source. If the existing order page already contains the right content, decide whether print CSS can prepare it for the required output. If a separate, reusable artifact is needed, define how the application will create and store the PDF.
- Check the recipient’s workflow. Establish whether a merchant or customer must download, email, archive, or print the document later, rather than print it immediately from a page.
- Test the actual outputs. Check page breaks, margins, paper sizes, color settings, PDF viewers, browsers, and physical printers that the workflow supports. Do not promise pixel-identical rendering across environments unless those environments have been tested.
- Verify access and data timing. For a dynamic print URL, ensure that the intended merchant can access it and that the required order data is available when printing begins.
- Include the final print step in testing. A generated PDF may still be sent through a platform’s print dialog, so test that complete path on each supported platform.
