When a browser-generated PDF differs from the page on screen, check the print stylesheet and page layout before blaming the export tool. Browsers may use print-specific CSS and paginate the document; settings such as paper size, scale, margins, and background printing can also change the result. A renderer bug or configuration problem remains possible, so the key is to isolate the cause.
First identify how the PDF is being made
Start with the rendering path: are you using a browser’s Print dialog, calling window.print(), or generating the file with automation such as Puppeteer? Record the browser and version, automation library and version if applicable, the page’s URL or local content state, and whether the run is headed or headless. These details matter because different export paths and engines need not behave identically.

For Puppeteer specifically, Page.pdf() uses print media by default. To generate a PDF using screen media instead, call page.emulateMediaType('screen') before page.pdf(). See the Puppeteer Page.pdf() documentation. Do not assume that another exporter has the same default.
Check which CSS applies in print
Printing a webpage to paper or PDF activates print media styles. Those rules can intentionally hide navigation, change colors or typography, adjust widths, or remove elements that appear on screen. A stylesheet can target print with a media="print" attribute, or rules can be grouped in @media print. Specificity and cascade order still apply, so a print declaration may be overridden by a more specific or later rule.

Inspect the linked stylesheets and every print-media block, then compare the relevant computed styles in screen and print modes. A print preview or browser print-media emulation can help isolate the cascade from other export settings. MDN explains print stylesheets and print media queries.
Set the page size, orientation, and margins deliberately
A PDF is paginated output, not simply a screenshot stretched onto a sheet. Paged-media layout divides a document into pages and fragments content to fit. The @page rule can specify page dimensions, orientation, and margins, while the print interface’s paper size, scale, and margin choices can affect the final page.

Check the CSS page setup alongside the values selected in the print dialog. If content is unexpectedly small, clipped, or surrounded by whitespace, change one setting at a time and preview again. MDN documents the CSS @page rule and paged media and page fragmentation. MDN marks @page Baseline 2024, but support for individual parts varies and older browsers may not support them.
Trace cut-offs and awkward page breaks
If text or an element is split or missing at a page boundary, inspect the fragmentation rules and the layout of the affected content. Look for page-break declarations and break-* rules, as well as long content, fixed-height containers, and regions with constrained overflow. These are places to investigate, not universal explanations: the actual cause depends on the page and renderer.

Use the paged-media references above to understand how content is fragmented, then test the affected element in print preview. If a break rule is intended to keep a component together, verify that it works in the specific browser and version you ship; do not assume identical behavior across engines.
Separate browser headers and footers from your document
Browser-added print headers and footers can put information around the page when there is room. They are print-interface furniture, not necessarily content generated by your site. In Chrome, check the print dialog and disable headers and footers if they are unwanted. Also review @page margins, since they determine the space available around the page content. Chrome’s margin-box CSS is a separate, browser-specific capability: Chrome for Developers wrote on October 30, 2024, “From Chrome 131 you can use CSS to add content to the margins of pages when they are printed.” Check current support in your target browsers before relying on it; a Chrome feature should not be treated as a cross-browser guarantee.

Investigate color only when color is the defect
Color changes do not necessarily indicate a sizing or pagination problem. Puppeteer documents that PDF colors are modified for printing by default and points to -webkit-print-color-adjust when exact colors are required. If only colors differ, check the print color-adjustment behavior and whether background graphics are enabled in the print settings. For Puppeteer, also consult the PDF options for the installed version, because API behavior and available options are version-sensitive. The Puppeteer PDF documentation describes its default and the color-adjustment property.

Use a controlled reproduction to narrow it down
- Capture the setup. Note the export path, browser and version, operating system, paper size, scale, margins, and relevant automation options. Include application state and whether the run is headed or headless.
- Compare media modes. Inspect screen and print styles, including linked print stylesheets,
@media printrules, specificity, and overrides. In Puppeteer, compare the documented print-media default with a run that callspage.emulateMediaType('screen')before generating the PDF. - Check the page box and print interface. Compare
@pagesize, orientation, and margins with the print dialog’s paper, scale, and margin settings. Check for browser-added headers and footers. - Investigate the specific symptom. For cuts or page splits, inspect fragmentation and constrained layouts. For color alone, check print color adjustment and background printing rather than changing page geometry.
- Test the engines you actually support. Repeat the reproduction in each target browser and version. Feature support varies, so record the setup with each result instead of extrapolating from one engine.
If a defect persists after these checks, investigate other explanations in that reproduction, such as a renderer bug, missing resources, application state, user print settings, or a different export path. The documentation establishes that print-specific rendering is expected; it does not establish that every PDF defect has a CSS cause.
