PCIe 5.0 doubles the theoretical x4 interface bandwidth available to a PCIe 4.0 SSD, but it does not make a PC, game or application run twice as fast. A Gen5 SSD is most useful when the system supports it and the workload moves large amounts of data; for everyday use, weigh practical workflow gains against capacity, cost, compatibility and cooling.
What changes from PCIe 4.0 to PCIe 5.0?
The generations differ in the rate at which data can travel over each PCIe lane. Samsung Business Insights reports 16 GT/s per lane for PCIe 4.0 and 32 GT/s per lane for PCIe 5.0. With four lanes, Samsung describes PCIe 4.0’s theoretical throughput as nearly 8 GB/s—half the PCIe 5.0 x4 figure. These are interface ceilings, not guaranteed SSD or application speeds. | Interface | Signaling rate | Theoretical x4 throughput |
|---|---|---|
| PCIe 4.0 | 16 GT/s per lane | Nearly 8 GB/s, according to Samsung Business Insights |
| PCIe 5.0 | 32 GT/s per lane | Twice PCIe 4.0 x4, according to Samsung Business Insights |
GT/s means gigatransfers per second; GB/s describes throughput after accounting for encoding and lane aggregation. The two figures are related but not interchangeable. A drive’s advertised maximum read speed is a model-specific specification, not a typical sustained transfer rate.

Sequential throughput—the rate of reading or writing data in a continuous stream—matters most when transferring or processing large files. It is not a direct multiplier for boot time, application launches or game loading. Those tasks depend on the workload and the drive’s behavior as well as the interface, so twice the theoretical bandwidth does not establish twice the real-world speed.

The available testing guide describes synthetic and real-world workloads, but it does not establish a controlled, same-capacity Gen4-versus-Gen5 comparison for game or application loading. There is therefore no supported universal percentage improvement to apply to those tasks. PC Gamer’s SSD testing guide
Will a PCIe 5.0 SSD work in your system?
Check the exact M.2 socket and platform documentation before buying. The drive’s generation alone does not tell you what speed the system can support: the SSD, slot generation, lane width and platform lane configuration all affect the connection. A faster drive in a Gen4 system is limited to the host’s supported capability; do not expect Gen5 speeds from a Gen4 slot.

- Look up the specific M.2 slot’s generation and lane width in the motherboard or system manual.
- Check whether using that socket affects lane routing or shares resources with another slot or device; arrangements vary by platform.
- Confirm the drive’s physical M.2 form factor and that there is clearance for its heatsink, if included.
- If adding an NVMe boot drive to an older motherboard, verify that its firmware supports booting from NVMe. Some older boards may not, according to PC Gamer.
What about heat and power?
Gen5 SSDs are not all thermally alike. Sandisk says many first-generation Gen5 drives used more power and needed active or passive cooling. Its later WD_BLACK SN8100 brief describes controller and efficiency improvements, while PC Gamer notes that recent Gen5 drives run cooler than early models but can still run hotter than an average Gen4 drive. Use the motherboard’s included M.2 heatsink when it is compatible and makes proper contact with the SSD. Add a separate heatsink only if the selected drive and system configuration need one and the case has room; a separate heatsink is not mandatory for every Gen5 drive.

When is the upgrade worth it?
A Gen5 SSD is easiest to justify when the system has a compatible Gen5 M.2 slot and the work regularly involves large data transfers or other sustained data movement. For ordinary desktop use or gaming, decide based on the actual workflow rather than the generation number or sequential-speed headline.
- Compare price per capacity for the drives you are considering.
- Look at sustained performance, not only the maximum sequential figure.
- Check the specific model’s power and cooling requirements, warranty and physical fit.
- Confirm that the intended slot can deliver the drive’s generation and lane width.
For scale, Sandisk rates the WD_BLACK SN8100 for up to 14,900 MB/s read speed. That is a manufacturer maximum for that model and configuration, not independent test data or a promise of typical sustained performance. Sandisk product brief (2025)
