PCAPdroid is a free, open-source Android app for viewing the network connections made by other apps. It uses Android’s local VPN mechanism to capture traffic on the device, rather than sending it through a remote VPN server. You can review app-level connection details and export a capture for deeper analysis; the feature list is documented by the PCAPdroid project, not an independent test.
What PCAPdroid shows you
PCAPdroid is useful for a practical privacy audit: start a capture, use the apps you want to inspect, then review the connections they make. The project documents per-app connection logs and traffic summaries, host and IP extraction, HTTP inspection, and PCAP export. Host information can be extracted from DNS, TLS and HTTP traffic, according to the project README.
Connection metadata is not the same as readable app content. An app may communicate over encrypted connections; seeing a host or connection does not mean you can read the encrypted data. PCAPdroid lists optional TLS decryption, but do not assume every app’s content will be visible or decryptable.
Why an Android VPN prompt appears
PCAPdroid uses Android’s VPN interface as a way to capture traffic locally without root. In this context, “VPN” describes the Android capture mechanism: PCAPdroid says it does not use a remote VPN server and processes data on the device. Android requires user approval to set up a VPN, shows an ongoing system notification while it is active, and allows only one active VPN connection at a time. If another VPN is running, you may need to stop it before starting PCAPdroid. These are Android platform behaviors documented by Android Developers.

A practical way to use it
- Install PCAPdroid from a distribution you trust, then open the app.
- Start a capture and approve Android’s VPN connection request. Android will show a VPN notification while the capture is active.
- Use the apps you want to observe. Then return to PCAPdroid and inspect the connection log and traffic summaries by app.
- If you need packet-level analysis, export a PCAP file and open it in a desktop analyzer such as Wireshark. Wireshark is an optional follow-up, not a requirement for viewing PCAPdroid’s on-device summaries.
PCAPdroid documents these functions, but that does not establish what a particular app will reveal in every session. Results depend on the connections made while capture is running and on what information those connections expose.
Free and paid features
The project identifies firewall rules, malware detection and PCAPng export as paid features. Its feature list therefore does not mean every advanced analysis or control option is free. Check the listing for the version and distribution you plan to use.

Where to get it and which version details matter
Availability details can differ by store and change over time. At the time reported by their listings, F-Droid showed PCAPdroid version 2.0.2, added September 22, 2026, with Android 6.0 or newer required; it identifies the license as GPL-3.0-or-later and says its build corresponds to the linked source tarball (F-Droid listing). Google Play showed an update date of September 20, 2026 (Google Play listing). Treat those as store-specific listing details, not a guarantee that every distribution has the same release.

If your main goal is to restrict which apps can access the network, rather than inspect their connections, NetGuard is an adjacent option. Its official site describes per-app allow and deny rules and says detailed traffic logging and address-based filtering are pro features (NetGuard). It serves a different emphasis from PCAPdroid’s connection inspection and capture export.
