On a PC specification sheet, “memory” usually means RAM: the fast, temporary workspace used for active apps and tasks. More precisely, RAM is one kind of computer memory; it is not the same as persistent storage, where saved files remain after shutdown.

What does “memory” mean, and is it the same as RAM?

In everyday consumer PC language, “memory” commonly refers to random access memory (RAM). Technically, memory is a broader category that includes RAM and other types, such as read-only memory (ROM). For clarity, specify the kind of memory you mean.

Microsoft describes RAM as a device’s “short-term memory.” That is an analogy: RAM holds data and instructions the computer is actively using so they can be accessed quickly. It does not mean RAM is where your saved files are kept. Microsoft’s overview of computer memory explains the consumer usage, while the Microsoft Style Guide entry for “memory” distinguishes the broader term from specific types such as RAM and ROM.

How is RAM different from storage?

RAM and storage serve different purposes. RAM holds the data and instructions needed for current work; persistent storage keeps applications and files for later. RAM is generally volatile, so its contents are lost when power is removed. Storage is non-volatile, so saved contents remain after shutdown. Microsoft notes that RAM is faster than disks for reading and writing, but the speed difference does not make RAM a substitute for storage.

What you are comparing RAM Persistent storage
Main role Holds data and instructions the computer is actively using Keeps files and applications for later use
When power is off Usually volatile; contents are lost Non-volatile; saved contents remain
Relative access Faster than disks for reading and writing, according to Microsoft Slower than RAM, but retains saved data
What capacity affects How much active work can fit comfortably How much saved data can fit

IBM also explains the distinction between active-data access and keeping data in storage in its article on data storage.

What does RAM capacity affect?

More RAM can help a computer handle more simultaneous work without slowing down, but adding RAM does not guarantee that every task will become faster. The result depends on the computer, its software and the work being done. RAM capacity concerns active work; storage capacity concerns how much saved material the device can keep.

What should you check before upgrading RAM?

A DIMM is a type of physical memory module, but the name alone does not establish that a module will fit a particular computer. IBM’s DIMM overview explains the module context; compatibility must be checked against the computer’s specifications.
