PC memory addressing is the way a computer identifies locations for data and instructions. On a modern PC, programs generally use virtual addresses; the processor’s memory-management unit (MMU) translates them into physical addresses that identify locations in RAM, using mappings managed by the operating system.
What is a memory address?
A memory address is an identifier for a location. An address space is the range of addresses a program or system can use. A program’s address space is not the same as the physical locations available in main memory: software works with its own view of addresses, while physical memory has actual locations in RAM. OpenStax explains the distinction between address space and memory space.

Virtual vs. physical addresses
| Address type | What it identifies | Typical role |
|---|---|---|
| Virtual address | A location in a process’s virtual address space | Used by application code and processor operations before translation |
| Physical address | A location in physical memory | Used after translation to access RAM |
Microsoft Learn puts the basic operation plainly: “Processors use virtual addresses when reading or writing to memory locations. During these operations, the processor translates the virtual address into a physical one.” The page was last updated June 28, 2024. Microsoft Learn: Virtual Address Spaces

How does address translation work?
- A program refers to data or instructions. The reference uses an address in that process’s virtual address space.
- The MMU translates the virtual address. It uses address mappings maintained by the operating system.
- The processor accesses the physical location. The translated physical address identifies the RAM location involved in the operation.
This translation happens as memory accesses occur; the program need not manage the physical placement of each item itself. The operating system organizes memory in pages. A program may see a continuous virtual range even when the physical pages backing it are not contiguous. Windows documentation gives 4-kilobyte pages as an x86 example, not a rule for every system. Why give programs virtual addresses?
Separate virtual address spaces help isolate processes. Two programs can use the same virtual address value without referring to the same physical memory: their mappings may point to different pages. Protection rules also prevent user-mode code from freely accessing protected system space. Microsoft Learn describes process address spaces and their protection.
Is virtual address space the same as RAM?
No. Virtual address space describes the addresses available to a process; installed RAM is physical memory. When a needed page is not resident in RAM, Windows may move page contents between physical memory and a paging file. Applications continue to use virtual addresses while the operating system manages that backing. A paging file is disk storage, not RAM, and does not have RAM’s speed or properties. What address-space sizes does Windows support?
There is no single address-space size that describes every PC. Architecture, Windows version, process type, and system configuration matter. Microsoft’s Windows driver documentation gives these qualified examples:
| Documented Windows example | Virtual address range | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Typical 32-bit process | 2 gigabytes, from 0x00000000 through 0x7FFFFFFF | Example in Microsoft’s Windows documentation; not a universal PC limit |
| 64-bit process on 64-bit Windows | 128 terabytes | Documented Windows range; actual usable range is platform- and system-specific |
These figures describe virtual address ranges in the stated Windows contexts, not how much RAM is installed or a universal limit for all 32-bit or 64-bit systems. A 64-bit processor also does not imply that every mathematically possible 64-bit address is usable. Microsoft Learn: Virtual Address Spaces

- G.SKILL RipjawsV Series DDR4 U-DIMM Memory Kit, Model: F4-3200C16D-16GVKB
- Non-ECC, DDR4 U-DIMM, 288-pin, for Desktop PC & Gaming

- Do not mix memory kits. Memory kits are sold in matched kits that are designed to run together as a set. Mixing memory kits will result in stability issues or system failure.
What PC memory addressing does not mean
- It does not mean an application normally treats a disk or paging file as if it were RAM; the operating system manages paging.
- It does not mean virtual addresses are globally unique across all programs; different processes can use matching values with different mappings.
- It does not mean every 64-bit PC supports the full theoretical address range; hardware and operating-system implementations define usable ranges.
This explanation concerns the CPU’s program-facing virtual-to-physical translation. Other platform address spaces, such as device DMA addressing, are separate topics.
