If it changes again, use when it happens to narrow down the cause: a change at a regular time may point to a scheduled theme switch, while one that follows sign-in or sync—or happens on a work or school PC—may involve personalization sync or device policy. If only one app looks light, check that app’s own theme setting.
1. Set Windows to dark mode
- Open Settings > Personalization > Colors.
- Under Choose your mode, select Dark.
This is the Windows 10 and Windows 11 color-mode setting documented by Microsoft Support. If you prefer Windows itself dark but want supported apps to use a different mode, choose Custom instead; it lets you choose Windows mode and app mode separately.
If Windows keeps returning to light mode, Outbyte PC Repair can review settings and system elements for causes of the change.

2. Check whether Windows or just one app changed
Look at several places, such as the taskbar, Start menu, Settings, and other supported apps. If they remain dark and only one app is light, Windows may not have reverted. Some applications have independent appearance controls, and not all apps support dark mode. Check the app’s settings for a theme, appearance, or color option before changing Windows again. Microsoft’s color-mode guidance describes this distinction.
3. Look for a scheduled theme switch
A change at a consistent hour, around sunset or sunrise, or alongside a Night Light schedule is a clue to check for software that changes themes automatically. If Microsoft PowerToys is installed, open PowerToys Settings > Light Switch.

- To stop Light Switch from changing the theme, turn off Enable Light Switch.
- If you want to keep its manual toggle shortcut but stop scheduled changes, set Schedule Mode to Off.
Light Switch can schedule changes from sunset to sunrise, at fixed hours, or by following the Windows Night Light schedule. Sunset-to-sunrise scheduling requires location services to be enabled and synced. See Microsoft’s Light Switch documentation for its controls and scheduling options.
A PowerToys project issue records one user report of Light Switch becoming enabled after an update and applying a fixed-hours schedule that caused repeated switches to light mode. That is an example of a possible failure mode, not evidence that PowerToys is responsible for every Windows dark-mode reset.

4. Check sync or device management if the change follows sign-in
If dark mode changes after you sign in or personalization sync runs, check whether sync or device policy may be involved. Microsoft’s SettingSync policy documentation describes administrative controls including Do not sync desktop personalization and Do not sync personalize. It covers Windows 11 version 21H2 and later and selected Windows 10 versions on Pro, Enterprise, Education, and IoT Enterprise editions. The existence of these controls does not establish that sync caused a particular reset.
On an employer- or school-managed PC, ask the IT administrator whether a policy controls personalization. Avoid trying to override managed settings.

5. Use registry values for diagnosis, not as a routine fix
Microsoft’s developer documentation maps AppsUseLightTheme to app color mode and SystemUsesLightTheme to Windows color mode under HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionThemesPersonalize. These values can help an experienced troubleshooter identify which mode is represented. The documentation does not establish that editing them, changing key permissions, or deleting policy keys is a safe general remedy. Start with the Settings control, scheduled-software check, and sync or administrator-policy check instead. See Microsoft’s registry-value reference.
