To decide, compare the subscription months you expect to use with the current prices of the games you actually want—not with a universal break-even number.

Work out the cost for your time horizon
There is no reliable break-even point that applies to every player: the result depends on your region, the games and editions you want, their current prices, how long you subscribe, and whether you value the included benefits.

- Make a short list. Write down the games you realistically expect to play, then check whether each is currently in the PC Game Pass catalog in your region.
- Estimate subscription spending. Multiply the current local monthly price by the number of months you expect to remain subscribed. Account for recurring billing and benefits you genuinely plan to use.
- Price the purchase alternative. Add the current prices of those specific games, editions, and DLC. Include a sale price only if it is available now, and count a member discount only when the title is eligible and the actual offer is clear.
- Compare the result with your priorities. Consider how much you value playing other catalog games, EA Play, or advertised day-one releases alongside the titles on your list—and whether you are comfortable losing catalog access when a subscription ends or a game leaves.
Prices and the catalog can change after a comparison, so check the live listings before deciding.

- You expect to play several games currently included in the PC catalog, rather than subscribing for just one title.
- You value access to EA Play or the day-one releases Xbox advertises for the plan.
- You are happy to pay on a recurring basis and accept that included games can leave the service.
- You want to try multiple catalog games before deciding which, if any, are worth buying separately.
Xbox says game titles, quantity, features, and availability vary by time, region, plan, and platform. Confirm that the specific games you want are available for PC in your market; a title’s presence on another Game Pass plan or platform does not establish that it is included in PC Game Pass. When buying games individually is the better fit
- You mainly want a small number of named games, especially ones not currently in the PC catalog.
- You expect to return to the same games after taking a break from gaming or stopping a subscription.
- You prefer to choose when to buy and can wait for a sale if the current price is too high.
- You want to select a particular edition or DLC bundle rather than rely on what a subscription currently includes.
A digital purchase is still governed by the storefront’s terms. Valve’s Steam Subscriber Agreement states, “The Content and Services are licensed, not sold.” That wording describes Steam’s agreement; it should not be treated as a universal statement of every PC store’s terms. Check billing, refunds, and requirements before paying
Recurring billing and Xbox’s limited refund condition
The US Xbox Store listing says the subscription continues automatically unless canceled. Xbox describes a refund for the most recent recurring charge if you cancel within 30 days after payment because you failed to turn off recurring billing. Xbox limits this right to one use per Microsoft account per subscription product; it is not a general trial or an unlimited refund option. Refund rules are store-specific
Steam’s general policy allows a refund request for a game within 14 days of purchase and under two hours of playtime, subject to exceptions and the policy’s conditions. Steam’s page identifies April 23, 2024 as its last update; check the live policy before relying on it. Do not assume another storefront uses the same rule. Read Steam’s refund policy.

Xbox lists Windows 10 or 11, version 22H2 or higher, as the baseline for the PC app. A game may need a newer or more capable system, so verify the individual title’s requirements before planning to play it. The PC Game Pass plan does not include cloud gaming; Xbox lists cloud gaming with other eligible plans. Compare Xbox Game Pass plans.

Use a mixed approach if it suits your habits
You do not have to choose one model for every game. A subscription can cover a stretch when several games you want are in the catalog; buying a favorite separately can make sense if you want to keep access under the relevant store’s license after the subscription ends or the title leaves. Xbox also advertises up to 20% off select games in its Store for PC Game Pass members, but the discount applies only to eligible titles and may not beat another store’s current price.
