Minimum identifies the publisher’s baseline for running a title as intended; recommended identifies a more capable configuration for a better experience. Neither label, by itself, promises a particular frame rate, resolution, graphics preset, or visual feature. Those details only become meaningful when the game’s requirement page states them.
Minimum and recommended requirements at a glance
A requirements list applies to one game, one platform and one published configuration. Treat the labels as shorthand for the conditions attached to that title, not as a cross-game standard.

| Tier | What the publisher is communicating | What you still need to verify | What the label does not prove |
|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum | The lowest hardware specification the publisher identifies for playing the game as intended. | Resolution, frame rate, preset, operating-system build, graphics API or feature level, memory, storage and special features. | That every system at or above the list will be smooth, or that the game will use 30 FPS, 720p or Low settings. |
| Recommended | A higher configuration the publisher associates with a better or good experience. | The exact quality preset, resolution, frame-rate target, ray-tracing option and compatibility requirements attached to it. | A guaranteed frame rate or identical image quality across different PCs. |
Bandai Namco Entertainment defines minimum requirements as the minimum hardware specifications needed for a game to play as intended. Dovetail Games describes minimum as hardware for a satisfactory experience at Lowest settings and recommended as hardware for a good experience at High-Ultra settings. Those descriptions explain how publishers may use the terms; they do not turn the labels into a universal benchmark.
What “minimum” really means
Minimum is a threshold chosen by the game publisher. It is the baseline configuration used to establish that the title can operate within the publisher’s intended support envelope. Bandai Namco’s support guidance also makes clear that operation below minimum is not guaranteed.

That threshold can cover more than speed. A minimum row may require a particular Windows version, DirectX feature level, graphics-card capability, amount of video memory, system RAM, free storage or an SSD. Missing one of those compatibility conditions can matter even when another component appears faster.
Minimum is not a smooth-play promise
A PC that merely meets minimum may run the game, but the publisher may not be promising a stable frame rate or a specific visual preset. Dovetail warns that systems below minimum can produce poor experiences and technical issues. Riot Games likewise cautions that systems meeting only minimum may still experience performance problems.
Below-minimum play is therefore uncertain rather than universally impossible. Some configurations may launch; others may fail to start, display rendering errors or perform poorly. The official wording establishes risk and lack of support, not a guaranteed yes-or-no outcome for every combination of parts.

When a requirements page states a target, use that target. For example, a Square Enix Steam listing specifies 60 frames per second at 1280×720 on the Low preset for its minimum configuration. That is a statement about that listed game. It is not evidence that minimum requirements for other games mean 60 FPS, 720p or Low.
What “recommended” really means
Recommended denotes a more capable configuration selected by the publisher for a better experience. The improvement might be a higher preset, a larger output resolution, a steadier frame rate or support for additional graphics features. Dovetail’s wording links recommended hardware with a good experience at High-Ultra settings. Other publishers may attach recommended hardware to a different preset or leave the workload less explicit. Do not assume that recommended means maximum settings, 4K or a fixed frame rate unless those conditions are written beside the recommendation.
Recommended is not a guarantee either
A recommended list is guidance, not an independent certification of every computer built from those parts. Cooling, power limits, driver versions, background workloads and the game’s own updates can affect results. Riot’s warning about performance issues on minimum-only systems also illustrates why a requirements tier should be read as a target configuration rather than a promise of identical results on every machine.

Why the labels do not tell you FPS or image quality by themselves
Frame rate and image quality depend on the workload the hardware must render. Resolution changes the number of pixels; a quality preset changes effects and detail; ray tracing adds another rendering workload; and an API or feature-level requirement can determine whether a graphics card is compatible at all.
Two games can use the same word, “recommended,” while targeting entirely different experiences. One may specify 1080p at High settings, another 4K at 30 FPS, and a third may provide no output target. Comparing the component lists without comparing their attached workloads can produce a misleading conclusion.
Resolution
Read the stated output resolution exactly. In the Square Enix example, minimum is 1280×720 and recommended is 1920×1080. Those are different rendering workloads even though both rows target 60 FPS. A separate Square Enix requirement page describes a 4K Cinematic target at 30 FPS, with or without ray tracing; that is a distinct high-end target, not a redefinition of minimum or recommended.

Frame rate
Only use an FPS number when the publisher supplies one. A requirements table without an FPS target leaves the expected frame rate uncertain. Do not fill that gap with a conventional assumption such as 30 or 60 FPS.
Graphics preset and visual features
Low, High, Ultra, Highest and Cinematic are workload descriptions, not interchangeable labels. Ray tracing may be optional, required for a particular mode or omitted entirely from the basic pair of tiers. Check whether the requirement applies with ray tracing enabled, disabled or in either configuration.
Every line in a requirements list can be a compatibility gate
Copy the complete row before deciding whether your PC qualifies. A processor and graphics card that look adequate on paper do not override a missing operating-system build, feature level, memory amount or storage requirement.
Operating system and build
Record the exact operating system named by the publisher. A game may support one Windows release but not an older build, or may publish separate requirements for another platform. Requirements are platform-specific; do not transfer a Windows list to macOS or another operating system.
Processor
Compare the complete CPU model, including generation and suffix, rather than relying on a family name or a higher-looking number. Dovetail cautions that CPU and GPU model numbers across brands and generations are not straightforward comparisons. If a page lists multiple supported processors, treat those as the publisher’s examples and check your exact model against them.

Graphics card, VRAM and feature level
The GPU model is only one part of the graphics requirement. Note the required video-memory amount, DirectX or other feature level and any named graphics capability. A card can have a similar-sounding model number yet lack a required feature or memory capacity.
System RAM
System memory is separate from graphics memory. Copy the RAM amount in the requirement and compare it with the installed memory reported by your operating system. If the game lists RAM for minimum and recommended separately, keep those figures tied to their respective workload targets.
Storage and drive type
Check both free capacity and whether the publisher specifies an SSD. A capacity number alone does not answer an SSD requirement. Make sure the selected drive has the stated free space at installation time.
Publisher examples that show why context matters
| Publisher and page example | Minimum target | Recommended or separate target | Lesson |
|---|---|---|---|
| Square Enix Steam requirements example | 60 FPS at 1280×720, Low preset. | 60 FPS at 1920×1080, Highest preset. | The same frame-rate target can be paired with different resolutions and presets. |
| Square Enix high-end requirements example | Not stated as a minimum/recommended pair in the cited example. | 4K, Cinematic quality, 30 FPS, with or without ray tracing. | A publisher may publish a separate premium target rather than folding it into the basic two-tier table. |
| Riot Games, League of Legends Windows requirements, dated September 22, 2026 | Low graphics at 1024×768, with operating-system, DirectX feature-level, GPU-feature, VRAM, storage and RAM entries. | High graphics at 1920×1080, with corresponding compatibility and memory entries. | Requirements can specify both a visual workload and compatibility gates. Riot says future changes are announced ahead when possible, but dates may change. |
The figures in this table belong to the named examples. They are not a definition of what minimum or recommended means for every PC game.
How to compare your own PC with a game’s requirements
- Open the exact game page. Use the game’s official store listing or support site for the platform you intend to use. Bandai Namco directs players to the Steam store page and the game’s official website because requirements differ by title and platform.
- Copy the entire minimum and recommended rows. Include the operating system, CPU, GPU, VRAM, system RAM, DirectX or feature-level requirement, storage capacity, SSD condition and any notes about ray tracing or another mode.
- Write down the workload beside each row. Record resolution, graphics preset and FPS when stated. Keep 1280×720 Low separate from 1920×1080 Highest or 4K Cinematic at 30 FPS; they are not equivalent targets.
- Check your actual hardware details. On Windows, press Windows key + R, enter
dxdiagand open the System and Display tabs. Dovetail identifies these tabs as places to find the operating system, processor, memory, DirectX version, graphics card and display memory. - Compare exact models and features. Match the complete CPU and GPU model, memory amounts, feature level and storage type. Do not decide from a product family name or model number alone, especially across different brands or generations.
- Classify the result by target. If your PC meets minimum but not recommended, expect to work within the minimum row’s stated workload. If the page gives no workload, the likely visual quality and FPS remain unspecified.
- Treat a shortfall as uncertainty. Falling below minimum means the publisher does not guarantee correct operation. It does not prove that every below-minimum computer will fail, but any launch, rendering or performance result is outside the stated baseline.
How to interpret mixed results
One component exceeds minimum while another falls short
Requirements are not a scorecard in which a faster processor cancels out an unsupported graphics feature or insufficient VRAM. Check every listed condition. A single missing compatibility gate can be decisive even when other parts exceed the recommendation.
Best Value
Your model name looks newer, but the comparison is unclear
Do not infer performance from a higher number alone. Dovetail specifically warns that CPU and GPU numbers across brands or generations are not straightforward comparisons. Use the exact models named by the game page and consult the manufacturer’s specifications when the requirement is ambiguous.
You meet recommended hardware but the page gives no FPS
Report the result honestly: you meet the publisher’s recommended component target, but the page does not establish a frame-rate promise. The practical expectation depends on the game’s unstated workload and your configuration; do not convert the word recommended into a guaranteed 60 FPS or maximum settings claim.
Your PC is below minimum but the game launches
Launching does not change the support status. The publisher’s warning still applies, and updates, scenes or settings may expose problems later. Keep the official minimum row as the boundary for what the publisher has chosen to support.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Requirements can change after launch
Check the current requirement page before installing or upgrading. Riot’s League of Legends page, dated September 22, 2026, states that future changes are announced ahead when possible and that those dates may change. A specification copied from an older store page may no longer describe the current build.
Record the page date or update date when you make a purchasing decision. Dovetail’s support article was updated April 22, 2026, demonstrating why an updated support page can be more useful than an undated screenshot or forum post.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming minimum means 30 FPS. No universal FPS is attached to the word. Use 30 only for a page that explicitly states 30.
- Assuming minimum always means Low settings. Dovetail gives that interpretation for its own guidance; another publisher may attach a different preset or no preset at all.
- Assuming recommended means Ultra at 4K. The recommendation may target 1080p High, another resolution or a feature-specific mode.
- Comparing component names without workloads. A 720p Low target cannot be treated as equivalent to 1080p Highest or 4K Cinematic.
- Ignoring operating-system and API entries. Compatibility requirements can be as important as CPU and GPU speed.
- Calling below-minimum play impossible. Official guidance warns of poor experiences, technical issues and lack of guarantee; it does not establish universal impossibility.
- Treating a model number as a benchmark. Cross-brand and cross-generation numbering is not a reliable performance ranking.
- Relying on an old list. Publishers can revise requirements and support conditions, so verify the current page.
The practical rule
Read minimum and recommended as two publisher-defined configurations for one game. First identify the platform and current requirement page. Then capture every hardware and compatibility condition, match the stated resolution, preset, FPS and graphics features, and compare those conditions with the exact details reported by your PC. Minimum is a baseline with no universal smooth-play guarantee; recommended is a higher target with no universal FPS guarantee. The workload written beside the tier—not the label alone—tells you what experience the publisher is describing.
