PCWorld senior editor Alaina Yee’s August 27, 2026 roundup collected suggestions from a Reddit r/buildapc discussion, after she read most of its 1,000-plus comments. It is a community-inspired list, not a controlled test or proof that every item improves comfort or productivity. Treat the 23 ideas below as a menu: find the friction in your own setup, then check that an accessory fits your desk and devices.
Start with the problem, not a shopping list
The recommendations fall into five practical groups. Some are low-effort conveniences; others address desk structure, clutter, or comfort. You do not need all of them. A pad will not solve a monitor-positioning problem, and a new chair will not add ports to a laptop.

Small conveniences that remove daily friction
Desk pad
A desk pad creates a continuous mouse surface and helps protect the desktop. Check that its dimensions leave room for the keyboard, mouse travel, and anything else that needs to stay on the desk.
Heated mug coaster
A heated coaster is a convenience for someone who wants a warm drink close at hand. It needs a suitable powered outlet or connection, and it is not a substitute for keeping liquids away from electronics.

Reusable mounting tape
Reusable mounting tape can secure lightweight accessories without adding another clamp or stand. Confirm the tape is appropriate for the surface and the item’s weight; avoid relying on it for anything heavy or valuable.
External speakers
Speakers offer an alternative when headphones are uncomfortable or inconvenient. Consider desk space, connection type, and whether others nearby will be affected by sound.
Replacement chair casters
New casters may make a chair roll more smoothly or better suit the floor. Match the stem and chair socket, and choose a wheel material intended for the floor surface; a wheel that fits poorly can damage the chair or floor.
Enthusiast upgrades for controls, networking, and audio
Macropad
A macropad adds programmable keys or controls for shortcuts and repeated actions. It is most useful when you can name the tasks you want to speed up; software setup and compatibility with your apps determine whether the extra controls earn their space. PCWorld’s examples included an Elgato Stream Deck v2.

Router
A router with useful management and visibility features can help users who want more insight into their home network. Consider the internet service, coverage area, wired-port needs, and client-device support before replacing networking equipment. The roundup mentioned Ubiquiti AmpliFi Alien as an example, not as a current best-buy recommendation.
USB microphone
A dedicated USB microphone can provide a desk-based option for calls, recording, or streaming. Check the computer’s available ports, microphone placement, and whether the microphone’s pickup pattern suits the room and how you speak.
Fix a desk that flexes, wobbles, or lacks room
Reinforcement plate
A reinforcement plate spreads the load from a clamp-mounted monitor arm or microphone boom across more of a desktop. It can help where the top is fragile, but it does not make an unsuitable clamp edge or unstable desk safe. Check the clamp’s required clearance, the desk’s thickness and edge shape, and the accessory’s mounting instructions.

A larger or deeper top may give you room to position monitors farther back or arrange equipment without crowding. Measure the available room, monitor bases or arms, and the distance you need between the screen and seating position before choosing dimensions.

Sturdier legs or frame
Workbench-style legs may suit a heavy DIY desk or a top that wobbles on its current frame. The legs must be compatible with the tabletop and its load. In PCWorld’s example, about one inch of tabletop thickness was given as a typical minimum for the frame discussed; that is not a universal requirement for every desk leg.
Reduce clutter and make room for equipment
Choose the right monitor support
An arm, riser, stand, and floor stand solve different physical constraints. An arm can reclaim desktop area, a riser can raise a screen without needing rear-edge clamp clearance, and a floor stand can be an option for a particularly heavy monitor. Compare desk clearance, support capacity, mounting pattern, height and reach, and how much surface each option actually frees.

USB hub or KVM switch?
These are not interchangeable. A USB hub expands the ports available from a computer. A KVM switch lets you use shared monitors and peripherals with multiple computers, subject to the switch’s connections and display capabilities.

A connector fitting the computer does not guarantee that it supports the features you need. Dell’s US office-accessory guide notes that USB-C connections do not automatically provide the same video output, data-transfer speed, or power delivery on every device. Check the computer and accessory specifications, not just the connector shape. PCWorld’s examples included an Anker 8-in-1 USB-C docking station; a dock or hub should be selected for its actual ports and capabilities.
Hooks, stands, and nearby storage
Headphone hooks, phone stands, and controller stands move items off the main work area or make them easier to reach. A small side table or rolling drawer unit can hold equipment and supplies that do not need to stay on the desktop. Choose a mount that suits the desk material and leaves frequently used items accessible.
Cable tray and reusable ties
A tray under the desk and reusable ties can gather excess cable without permanently bundling everything together. Plan for the desk’s movement, connector access, and ventilation. Dell advises leaving sufficient slack on height-adjustable desks, keeping connectors accessible, and routing cables away from moving parts and blocked airflow. PCWorld mentioned IKEA Signum as an example of an under-desk tray.

Going wireless can remove some cables from the desktop, but it does not eliminate charging or receiver needs. Check battery or charging arrangements, device compatibility, and whether a receiver or Bluetooth connection suits your computer.

Choose comfort accessories around your own fit
Chair
A better-fitting chair can be a more meaningful change than adding another desk gadget. Look for adjustability that suits your body and desk, and try a chair where possible. A refurbished premium chair is one possible route, but condition, fit, and return terms matter more than the label. PCWorld’s roundup included the Staples Hyken as an example; it does not establish that model as the right chair for every person.
Keyboard, mouse, or gaming keypad
Input devices differ in shape, layout, and feel. Comfort is individual, so evaluate hand position, key layout, grip, and the tasks you perform. A gaming keypad may suit someone who wants a compact set of frequently used controls, but it is not a general replacement for a keyboard. PCWorld included a Razer Tartarus gaming pad among its examples.
Keyboard tray
A tray can change the keyboard’s height or position without replacing the whole desk. Confirm that it fits the desk, clears your legs, and can be adjusted to a comfortable position while seated.
Monitor light bar or backlighting
A monitor-mounted light bar provides task lighting from above the screen; backlighting adds ambient light behind the display. Choose based on the type of light you want, available space, directional control, and monitor compatibility. The PCWorld article described the light bar as the more premium route and backlighting as a lower-cost option, but its prices are dated rather than dependable current comparisons. Govee monitor LED backlighting was one example in the roundup.
Footrest, sit/stand desk, and standing mat
A footrest may help when your feet do not rest comfortably while seated. A sit/stand desk or riser changes working height, and a standing mat is an option for standing use. Dell presents accessories such as adjustable stands, footrests, and wrist supports as options rather than a one-size-fits-all arrangement. Adjustability and personal fit matter; these products are not guarantees of health benefits or relief from pain.
A practical compatibility check before you buy
- Desk and mount: Measure desk thickness, edge shape, clamp clearance, and available rear space. Check that the mounting method suits the desktop material.
- Monitor: Verify the screen’s mounting pattern and weight against the arm, stand, or floor support, including any required adapter.
- USB-C and video: Confirm the computer’s specific port capabilities, display count and resolution requirements, data needs, and charging expectations.
- Cables: Leave enough slack for height adjustment, keep connectors reachable, and avoid moving mechanisms and ventilation paths.
- Ergonomic fit: Check adjustability against your body, chair, and desk, and choose an accessory to address a specific positioning issue rather than assuming a universal benefit.
For a first upgrade, identify the annoyance that occurs most often and buy only the accessory that directly addresses it. That keeps the list useful as a decision tool rather than turning it into a requirement to fill every inch of the desk.
