A PayPal payment marked Pending is not automatically cancellable. Open Activity and check the transaction details: if it is Unclaimed, you may be able to cancel it; if it is a merchant authorization, contact the merchant; if it is Completed, ask the recipient for a refund. Use the Resolution Center for an unauthorized payment or an eligible purchase dispute.
First, identify what PayPal means by “Pending”
PayPal uses several statuses for transactions that have not reached a final outcome. The label alone does not tell you whether a cancel option is available. In PayPal’s status guide, the distinctions include:

- Pending: PayPal may be reviewing the payment or waiting for verification of the payment source.
- On hold: The transaction is being held during a review or dispute.
- Temporary hold: Funds are held during an authorization process.
- Unclaimed: The recipient has not accepted or received the payment. PayPal says it automatically cancels unclaimed payments after 30 days, though you can cancel manually before then if the option appears.
- Completed: The transaction succeeded and the funds are in the recipient’s account.
A separate security review can place a sent payment on hold for up to 24 hours—for example, if you have not sent money recently or are paying someone new. PayPal says no action is needed for this particular check; if it finds no issue, the payment should complete within that period. If PayPal determines the payment was unauthorized, it reverses it. This 24-hour guidance applies to that specific security precaution, not to every pending payment. See PayPal’s explanation of payment holds.

A seller’s incoming payment hold is a separate issue from a buyer’s outgoing pending payment. PayPal says seller holds can relate to account history, selling patterns, verification, risk, and other factors; sellers should check the account-specific “Know your options” area. PayPal’s seller hold guidance is not a way to cancel a payment you sent.

How to cancel, request a refund, or get help
Choose the action based on the transaction type and status—not simply because the word “pending” appears.
| What you see | What to do | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Unclaimed payment | In Activity, open the payment and select Cancel if available. | PayPal says unclaimed payments automatically cancel after 30 days if not canceled sooner. |
| Merchant authorization or order | Contact the merchant using the details in the transaction. | The authorization is permission for the merchant to capture an amount, not proof the purchase has completed. PayPal says neither you nor PayPal can cancel the order directly; the merchant may be able to cancel it. |
| Completed payment | Ask the recipient or seller to issue a refund. | If it was a Goods and Services purchase and the seller does not resolve the problem, check whether you can open a dispute before the applicable deadline. |
| Payment you did not authorize | Report it through the Resolution Center. | PayPal says it will investigate. First check whether the charge could be an automatic payment or a transaction by another person authorized to use your account. |
| Upcoming subscription or recurring charge | Cancel the automatic payment agreement in Settings → Payments → Subscriptions and saved businesses/Automatic Payments. | This stops future charges under that agreement; it does not by itself reverse an already completed payment. |
PayPal says orders and authorizations typically expire in 29 days, but merchant actions and authorization rules affect a particular transaction. Do not rely on an exact expiration date for a specific authorization. Read PayPal’s authorization guidance.

How long a PayPal refund may take
PayPal’s US help guidance gives the following typical refund timelines. They are estimates, not guarantees; bank and issuer processing and the transaction’s circumstances can change when the money appears.
| Original payment method | PayPal’s typical guidance |
|---|---|
| PayPal balance | Generally the same day. |
| Bank account | Usually up to five business days once issued; some cases can take up to 30 days depending on the payment status when the refund was issued. |
| Debit card | Generally up to five business days; some refunds can take up to 30 days depending on the card company. |
| Credit card | One to two billing cycles, depending on the issuer. PayPal describes a typical billing cycle as 28–31 days. |
| Balance and card | The balance portion is generally returned the same day; the card portion can take one to two billing cycles. |
Refund status also matters. If a refund is Pending, PayPal says the seller has issued it but the money has not cleared the seller’s bank; it usually completes within five business days. Contact the seller if it remains pending after that. If the refund is On hold, the seller refunded you before the original payment cleared, so the refund completes when the original funds clear. If PayPal marks a refund Completed but it has not posted, PayPal recommends asking your bank or card issuer to trace it using the bank reference ID where available. Check PayPal’s current refund timing guidance.

When to escalate
- Unauthorized charge: Report it promptly in the Resolution Center. Review automatic payments and authorized account users before filing so you can identify what happened. PayPal’s instructions for reporting unauthorized activity explain the process.
- Eligible purchase not resolved by the seller: Review the transaction in the Resolution Center and check the dispute deadline that applies to it. Do not assume every payment type qualifies.
- Refund timing has passed: Contact the seller if the refund is still pending; if it is completed but missing, ask the bank or card issuer to trace it. Keep the transaction details and any reference ID available.
