Pay-Gap Cost Calculators: Why the Calculation Should Stay on Your Device

A pay-gap cost calculator can return results without sending salary figures to a server. Here’s what zero network calls means—and what it doesn’t promise.

A pay-gap cost calculator should do its arithmetic in your browser and make no network requests because of the figures you enter or the calculation you run. That keeps salary information from being sent to a server merely to perform arithmetic. It is a privacy-preserving design recommendation—not a universal legal rule that every calculator must make zero network requests.

What “zero network calls” means

A browser must first download a webpage and its code before the calculator can run. The practical meaning of zero network calls is therefore narrower: once the page and the code it needs have loaded, entering pay figures and calculating a result should not trigger another request.

That boundary matters. A site might still load remote fonts, analytics, advertisements, or other resources when the page opens. So the statement that calculation makes no network calls does not, by itself, establish that the whole site makes no network requests or that it works offline.

Why pay figures deserve careful handling

Salary information can be personal information. The UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), for example, identifies salary information among the personal information an organisation may hold about workers to meet its obligation to pay them. Whether figures entered into a particular calculator are personal data depends on what they contain and whether they identify, or can be linked to, an individual.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

A calculator ordinarily needs the figures to produce its result; it does not need to send them to a server just to do arithmetic. Processing them locally avoids that unnecessary transfer and is a straightforward way to reduce the data exposed to the service. Google Chrome’s developer guidance likewise recommends collecting only the minimum data needed for the immediate task; that is design guidance, not law.

How this fits data-protection law

Article 25 of the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) requires controllers to implement appropriate technical and organisational measures to apply data-protection principles, including data minimisation, taking account of the state of the art, implementation costs, processing context, and risks. Article 25(2) says that, by default, only personal data necessary for each specific processing purpose should be processed. The ICO describes data protection by design and default in similar terms: consider privacy from the outset and limit personal information to what the purpose requires.

Those principles support local calculation as a sensible way to avoid transmitting entered figures for a task that does not require a server. They do not prescribe a particular web architecture, and they do not establish that every pay-gap calculator is legally required to make zero network requests. The appropriate measures depend on the circumstances and risks.

What a privacy-conscious implementation should do

  • Run the arithmetic in the browser. Use code already delivered with the page rather than sending entered values to an API for calculation.
  • Keep inputs out of requests. Do not put figures into a request body or URL, or send them to analytics or another service during calculation.
  • Be clear about other page activity. External scripts, analytics, advertising, and remote assets can make requests independently of the calculation. A claim about calculation-time requests should not be presented as a claim that no other requests occur.
  • Consider persistence and sharing separately. Values stored beyond the immediate calculation or deliberately shared raise different questions from transient local inputs. The privacy claim should match what the implementation actually does.
  • Support the claim with evidence. Architecture and observed request behavior provide stronger grounds than a privacy-policy statement alone.

What users can reasonably ask

“Does this calculator send my pay data anywhere?” is a useful question. A precise answer should say whether entering figures or calculating a result triggers requests, and distinguish that behavior from requests used to load the page or other resources. A broad assurance that figures are “never sent anywhere” should only be made when the site’s full behavior supports it.
