Choose the Patagonia Nano Puff if damp weather is likely or you want a lower-profile layer; choose the Down Sweater if greater warmth in dry conditions is your priority. That is Patagonia’s qualitative guidance—not a temperature-rated head-to-head result.
How the jackets differ
The central difference is the insulation: the Nano Puff uses synthetic PrimaLoft Gold Insulation Eco, while the Down Sweater uses down. That affects how each handles moisture and how they layer, but neither jacket is a universal best choice.

| Decision | Nano Puff | Down Sweater |
|---|---|---|
| Insulation | 60-g PrimaLoft Gold Insulation Eco, described by Patagonia as 100% postconsumer recycled polyester. | 800-fill-power Responsible Down Standard down. |
| Damp conditions | Patagonia says synthetic insulation retains warmth when wet. Its DWR finish sheds light moisture; it is not waterproof. | Patagonia says wet down loses insulating structure. The DWR finish is described as handling light precipitation, not making the jacket waterproof. |
| Relative warmth | Less absolute warmth than the Down Sweater, according to Patagonia’s comparison guide. | Patagonia gives down the edge in absolute warmth in dry conditions. |
| Layering | Lower-profile and easier to layer under a shell, according to Patagonia. | Loftier by comparison. |
| Packability | Stuffs into its internal chest pocket, which doubles as a stuffsack. | Patagonia says it also stuffs into its chest pocket. |
| Shell | Recycled polyester ripstop with a DWR finish made without intentionally added PFAS, on the referenced men’s jacket. | NetPlus recycled nylon ripstop shell on the referenced men’s jacket. |
| Listed garment weight | 369 g (13 oz) for the referenced men’s product-page configuration; not a figure to generalize to other styles or sizes. | Not stated in the cited product-page material. |
Choose the Nano Puff for damp risk and layering
If your insulated layer may get wet, the Nano Puff is the safer of these two choices. Patagonia’s comparison guide says synthetic insulation is the safest option when an insulated jacket might get wet. That is manufacturer guidance, not an independent comparative test; the jacket’s DWR helps with light moisture but does not make it waterproof.

Its lower-profile shape is also useful when you expect to wear a shell over your insulation. The referenced men’s model has 60-g PrimaLoft Gold Insulation Eco and weighs 369 g (13 oz); that weight applies to that specific configuration, not every Nano Puff style or size. Choose the Down Sweater for more warmth in dry conditions
When warmth is the priority and prolonged dampness is unlikely, Patagonia gives the Down Sweater the edge in absolute warmth. Its referenced men’s model uses 800-fill-power Responsible Down Standard down and a NetPlus recycled nylon ripstop shell. The comparison guide does not provide a standardized warmth rating or a temperature threshold, so treat the warmth difference as qualitative rather than a promise for a particular weather range.

What neither jacket’s specifications establish
- A temperature rating: Patagonia’s comparison gives a relative warmth judgment, not a tested temperature range for either jacket.
- Waterproof protection: DWR finishes address light moisture; the cited descriptions do not call either jacket waterproof.
- A universal weight comparison: The cited material gives a specific men’s Nano Puff weight but no comparable Down Sweater garment weight. Weights and construction can vary by style and size.
- Independent durability results: Patagonia describes both as versatile layers for general wear and tear, but the comparison is not independent abrasion testing.
Quick decision
- Pick the Nano Puff for damp-risk conditions, synthetic insulation, or a lower-profile layer under a shell.
- Pick the Down Sweater for down insulation and greater absolute warmth when conditions are dry.
- If packability is the deciding factor, both jackets stuff into a chest pocket according to Patagonia.
