Password vs. Passcode: What the Difference Actually Is

A password authenticates an account; a passcode is usually a numeric or device-local code. Here is how the terms overlap and why context matters.

A password is a secret that authenticates you to an account. A passcode is usually a numeric secret, often the one that unlocks a phone or authorizes an action. The two words overlap, and no universal technical rule separates them. The label mostly reflects the product’s naming habits and what the secret is protecting.

Why the words overlap

In the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) identity guidance, SP 800-63B-4 (published July 2025), “password” is the broad term. It means a secret authenticator that demonstrates “something you know.” NIST’s glossary defines a PIN as a password that typically consists only of decimal digits. So a numeric code a product calls a “passcode” can still be a password in technical terms.

NIST also cautions that digital identity terminology does not always have one consistent definition. Treat “password for accounts, passcode for devices” as a common convention, not a standard.

The terms side by side

Term What it generally means How it relates to the others
Password A memorized secret used as an authentication factor The broad category. It can contain letters, digits, symbols or words.
Passphrase A password made of a sequence of words or other text A kind of password, often chosen because length is easier to manage in words.
PIN A password typically consisting only of decimal digits A numeric format. It may authenticate an account or serve a local role, depending on context.
Device passcode / unlock PIN Product wording for a code entered on a device If it locally activates an authenticator, NIST calls it an activation secret.
One-time passcode (OTP) A generated secret meant for a single use Different from a stable password or unlock code. Identify it by its one-use function.

Why your phone’s passcode is a different kind of secret

Consider the two cases:

  • Website login. You type a password, it travels to the service, and the service’s verifier checks it centrally.
  • Phone unlock. You enter a code on the device. NIST describes this role as an activation secret: a password or PIN used locally to unlock a multi-factor authenticator. It stays within the authenticator and its endpoint, and it unlocks access to a stored authentication key. It is not sent to a remote verifier the way an account password is.

The same six digits could be called a PIN, a passcode or a password, but its job is to unlock something on the device. That difference in flow matters more than the word chosen.

A passcode is not automatically one-time

“Passcode” is also the word used for texted or app-generated codes. NIST separates a stable password or PIN from a one-time passcode, which an authenticator generates for a single use. If a prompt says “enter your passcode,” check where the code comes from. Did you choose it, or was it just sent to you? Is it reusable or single-use?

Is a passcode weaker than a password?

Not by definition. Strength depends on the secret’s length and unpredictability, how it is verified, rate limits and device protections, and what it unlocks. A short numeric code protected by attempt limits on a device is a different risk from a short code checked by a remote server with no limits. Don’t assume every passcode is weaker than every password, or the reverse.

Current length guidance

For passwords verified centrally, NIST SP 800-63B-4 (2025) sets these minimums:

  • 15 characters when the password is the only authentication factor.
  • 8 characters as the permitted minimum when the password is used only as part of multi-factor authentication.

The standard also disallows extra character-composition rules and forced periodic password changes unless there is evidence of compromise. NIST’s consumer page, “How Do I Create a Good Password?”, likewise recommends at least 15 characters. Individual services and devices may set their own requirements.

Length has limits. NIST states in SP 800-63B-4, §3.1.1: “Passwords are not phishing-resistant.” Its password-strength appendix notes that phishing, keylogging and social engineering are not neutralized by a long or complex password.

What to do in practice

  1. Use a unique password for every account. NIST’s consumer advice recommends a password manager that supports MFA for accounts that still use passwords.
  2. Turn on multi-factor authentication wherever it is offered.
  3. Make manually created passwords long. A passphrase of several words is easier to remember at length.
  4. Use passkeys where supported. NIST describes them as avoiding memorization and being less susceptible to phishing theft. A local device PIN may still unlock the device that holds the passkey, so that code still deserves care.
  5. Read the prompt. Work out whether you are unlocking a device, logging in to a remote service, or entering a one-time code, and treat the secret accordingly. Never share a one-time code with anyone who contacts you.
