For bulk password-reset delivery, keep the recovery credential separate from the message-delivery job: create and protect each user’s reset credential in the application, queue a minimal job that points to it, and let workers deliver the email or SMS. Queueing can buffer work and support retries, but it does not make a reset link or PIN safe. Security depends on how credentials are generated, stored, exposed, rate-limited, and invalidated.
How should the password-reset pipeline work?
Treat each reset request as an individual recovery event, even when many requests are being processed at once. A practical flow is:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Accept the request and apply abuse controls. Rate-limit requests at the account and service level, and avoid responses that reveal whether an account exists.
- Create a recovery record. Generate a credential under the application’s recovery policy, associate it with one user, and store it securely.
- Enqueue delivery work. Put an opaque recovery-record or job identifier and the necessary channel metadata in the message, rather than copying a raw token into broadly accessible queue data or logs. This is a prudent design inference from OWASP’s credential-storage and leakage protections, not a queue-product requirement.
- Deliver asynchronously. A worker retrieves the permitted recovery data, renders the message, and submits it through the selected email or SMS delivery integration. Record attempts and terminal failures.
- Redeem through the application. The user follows the reset flow, which validates the credential and applies its own abuse controls. On successful use, invalidate the credential.
Keep delivery status distinct from recovery status: a provider accepting a send request does not prove that the user received the message or redeemed the credential. The application should remain authoritative about whether a reset credential is valid.

OWASP treats reset identifiers as credentials. It recommends that they be generated with a cryptographically secure random number generator, be long enough to resist brute force, be linked to an individual user, be stored securely, and be invalidated after use. Give them a defined expiry and make retries deliver the intended existing recovery event rather than silently creating additional valid credentials. See the OWASP Forgot Password Cheat Sheet.

Email reset links
- Serve the reset flow over HTTPS.
- Construct reset URLs from a hard-coded or otherwise trusted domain; do not derive the link’s host from an untrusted Host header.
- Set a
no-referrerpolicy on the reset page to reduce the risk of leaking token-bearing URLs to other sites. - Rate-limit token attempts and protect the flow against brute force.
SMS recovery PINs
OWASP recognizes SMS PINs as a possible recovery method, just as it recognizes email URL tokens. Neither channel is automatically the right choice for every service. Consider whether the user can reliably access the channel, their preference, provider constraints and cost, abuse resistance, and the recovery threat model. The cited guidance does not establish a universal ranking or geography-specific recommendation.
Should workers run continuously or poll on a cron schedule?
A continuously running worker can wait for jobs as they arrive; a cron-triggered poller starts or runs on a schedule. Neither is a universal winner. The schedule and runtime model should follow the delivery-latency objective and operating constraints, rather than an assumed standard cron frequency.

| Design | What to weigh | Trade-off to plan for |
|---|---|---|
| Continuously running worker | Process availability, idle resource use, concurrency, retries, and operational complexity. | Can be ready to handle work without waiting for the next scheduled invocation, but the service must keep workers available and healthy. |
| Cron-triggered poller | Schedule interval, startup overhead, concurrency control, retries, and operational complexity. | The schedule adds waiting before work is picked up and can cause bursts when multiple jobs wake together. The appropriate frequency depends on the latency objective, provider limits, expected volume, and operating constraints. |
Choose using expected delivery latency, idle cost or process availability, startup overhead, concurrency control, retry behavior, and operational complexity. Measure queue age and end-to-end delivery latency in the deployed system; no particular schedule or performance result follows universally from the architecture.

Long polling
SQS long polling reduces empty and false-empty receive responses. Its WaitTimeSeconds can be set up to 20 seconds; configure the HTTP response timeout to be longer than the selected wait. If polling multiple queues, AWS recommends a separate thread for each queue so a wait on one does not block the others. See AWS guidance on setting up long polling.
Visibility timeout
After a worker receives an SQS message, SQS hides it from other receives for the visibility timeout. Set the timeout to account for expected handling and message deletion time. If work may take longer, AWS describes extending the timeout while processing continues. A timeout that expires before completion can let another worker receive the same message; one that is excessively long delays another attempt after a failed worker. See AWS guidance on SQS visibility timeouts.

Retries, duplicates, and dead-letter handling
AWS describes SQS standard queues as at-least-once delivery, so design handlers to tolerate a message being processed more than once. FIFO deduplication is time-bounded to a five-minute window; it does not remove the need to make application-side processing safe under retries and duplicate effects. Configure a dead-letter queue for repeated processing failures and define an operator process to inspect and recover appropriate messages instead of allowing indefinite redelivery. See the SQS Developer Guide and AWS’s SQS outage recovery guidance.

What should you monitor and test?
- Queue age and delivery latency: Track how long a job waits and how long delivery takes, including the effect of a cron schedule if used.
- Attempt outcomes: Distinguish successful provider submission, retryable failure, and terminal failure without logging raw credentials.
- Duplicate handling: Check that repeated delivery jobs do not create unintended additional valid credentials or harmful repeated side effects.
- Recovery lifecycle: Verify that credentials are associated with the right account, expire according to policy, stop working after redemption, and cannot be brute-forced without effective limits.
- Failure recovery: Define how operators inspect terminal failures and safely reprocess eligible jobs.
Keep queue semantics and channel behavior explicit in the implementation: successful queue receipt is not message delivery, and successful delivery submission is not proof of account recovery.
