For accounts that support them, passkeys generally offer better protection against phishing and password reuse than password-based sign-in. Keep a password manager too: it can generate and store unique passwords for services that have not added passkey support. The two tools solve different problems, and some password managers can store passkeys.
How passkeys and password managers compare
| Decision | Passkeys | Password managers |
|---|---|---|
| Phishing resistance | Designed to resist phishing because the credential is bound to the service’s domain. A lookalike site should not be able to produce a valid sign-in response for the real service. FIDO Alliance: Passkeys | Some managers only offer saved credentials on a matching site, which can help avoid entering them on a fake one. But the credential remains a password, so it should be unique. NIST SP 800-63B-4 |
| Password reuse | Each passkey is specific to a service; it is not a password shared across accounts. FIDO Alliance: Passkeys | Can generate and store a distinct password for each account. You still need to replace any passwords you have reused. NIST SP 800-63B-4 |
| Where it works | Only on accounts where passkey sign-in is supported and you have enrolled one. | Useful for services that still require passwords. NIST’s SP 800-63-4 implementation FAQ says verifiers must allow password managers and autofill. NIST implementation FAQ |
| Access and recovery | Depends on whether the passkey is synced through a provider, tied to one device or security key, or used across devices. The service’s fallback methods also matter. FIDO Alliance: Passkeys | Depends on access to the vault and the manager’s recovery design. Protect the vault login with a strong, unique passphrase and MFA where available. NIST password guidance |
Why passkeys are harder to phish
A passkey is a FIDO credential that uses public-key cryptography. The service keeps a public key; an authenticator holds the corresponding private credential and uses it to answer a sign-in challenge. Because the passkey is associated with the service’s domain, it is not a reusable secret that you type into a page that might only look like the real one. FIDO Alliance: Passkeys

NIST’s consumer guidance puts it plainly: “Unlike passwords, passkeys can’t be easily stolen through phishing and don’t require memorization.” NIST, “How Do I Create a Good Password?” This is a qualitative security advantage, not a published percentage showing how much safer passkeys are than password managers.

What a password manager still does well
A password manager helps create and keep track of long, complex passwords so you do not have to memorize a different one for every account. Unique passwords limit the damage if one service’s password is exposed: attackers cannot simply try that same password on your other accounts. NIST says its SP 800-63-4 guidance requires services to permit password managers and autofill because they support using unique passwords and help guard against guessing, cracking, and password spraying. #1 Best Overall
- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
A manager does not convert a password into a passkey or guarantee that an account cannot be phished or taken over. Its vault is itself a valuable account, so choose a strong, unique master passphrase and turn on MFA if the provider offers it. NIST password guidance
Passkey syncing, device-bound credentials, and recovery
Synced passkeys can be available on devices using the same provider, which can make switching devices easier. Device-bound passkeys remain on a particular device or security key and may suit situations where the credential must stay with a specific authenticator. These models have different trade-offs; neither removes the need to plan for recovery. FIDO Alliance: Passkeys

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5C NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5C NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5C NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
Before relying on one device, check how you will recover access if it is lost and what fallback sign-in methods the service allows. The account that syncs or manages passkeys also needs protection. A FIDO2 security key is an optional phishing-resistant authenticator where the account and your devices support it; check compatibility and recovery requirements before choosing one. CISA recommends FIDO authentication and identifies hardware security keys as an effective option, with passkeys an acceptable alternative where feasible. Is one a replacement for the other?
No. Passkeys are the better sign-in choice where a service supports them and your recovery arrangements work for you. A password manager remains useful for the many accounts that still use passwords, and it may also support passkey storage. There is no universal winner independent of service support, devices, recovery options, and the account’s risks. NIST, CISA, and FIDO guidance describes the security properties and recommended practices; it does not provide controlled comparative testing or a measured breach-reduction figure for the two options.
