A manager can help you use a different, strong password for every account, reducing the harm caused by password reuse. A cloud-synced vault also places valuable credentials behind a provider account and makes that vault a tempting target. The evidence available here documents Google Password Manager and Facebook account-security features; it does not establish that every social-media company is a trustworthy password-manager provider.
What does “trusting a social media giant” mean?
Separate three things that are easy to conflate:
- A password manager creates, stores, and fills credentials for other sites and apps.
- Your social account’s login security determines how someone signs in to that social account. Two-factor authentication or a security key can strengthen this login, but it does not by itself secure a separate password vault.
- The browser or operating system may store or autofill credentials. A service’s presence in a browser does not, by itself, establish which account or device stores them.
Google documents a password manager that can save passwords and passkeys, autofill them, and alert users to compromised passwords. Facebook’s cited help pages describe protections for logging in to Facebook, not a Facebook password manager. These are different products and claims; Facebook’s account protections cannot be treated as evidence about a separate vault.

What are the benefits and risks of a password manager?
The central benefit is that you do not have to memorize or reuse every password. Google recommends unique passwords, and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency advises using a reputable manager to create, store, and fill passwords. CISA’s consumer tip sheet is dated August 14, 2023, so treat it as guidance from that date rather than a newly updated assessment.

The trade-off is concentration: one manager may hold credentials for many accounts. NIST SP 800-53 Revision 5.1 notes that adversaries may target the collection of passwords held by a manager. This is a reason to protect the vault and assess its safeguards—not a finding that every manager is unsafe.

Account-synced or stored only on a device?
Google documents both choices in Chrome. Saving passwords to a Google Account allows access across devices signed in to that account. Saving them on the device avoids saving them to the Google Account. Those options change convenience and dependence; neither description alone establishes that one storage choice is secure against every threat.
| Choice | Convenience | What access depends on | Recovery consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Save to a Google Account | Use saved credentials across devices signed in to the account. | Access to the Google Account and its protections. | Consider how you will recover that account if you lose access; Google recommends recovery information and two-step verification. |
| Save on the device in Chrome | Credentials are kept on that device rather than saved to the Google Account. | Access to the device and its local data. | Consider what happens if the device is lost, damaged, or unavailable; the cited product information does not establish a cross-device recovery path for this choice. |
Google says saved passwords and passkeys are protected by encryption as part of its built-in security. That is the provider’s product description, not independent verification of security against every attack. The same distinction applies to any provider’s security claims.

How to assess a provider before saving important passwords
Do not infer trustworthiness from a company’s size, familiarity, or social-media presence. Check the particular product and your own recovery needs:
- Storage and encryption: Find out where credentials are stored, how syncing works, and what the provider says about encryption. Treat those statements as provider claims unless independently verified.
- Account protection: Check available two-step verification or other strong sign-in protections for the account that unlocks the manager. Keep that account’s recovery information current.
- Recovery: Understand what happens if you lose your phone, computer, or access to the provider account. A convenient sync feature can also make account recovery essential.
- Export: Check whether you can export your credentials in a usable form if you change providers or lose access. Plan how to protect any exported file, since it may expose passwords.
- Platform support: Confirm that the manager works with the devices, browsers, and services you actually use, including any passkey support you need.
- Password tools: Check whether it generates unique passwords and can identify compromised or reused credentials. Feature availability can vary by product.
- Independent evidence: Look for credible, current assessments of the specific provider and product. A feature page alone does not prove that a manager is independently secure.
If you cannot determine how access, recovery, or export works, do not place every important credential in the vault until you have a fallback plan. For a work or school account, follow the organization’s security policy.

Can passkeys reduce the risk?
For services that support them, passkeys can reduce reliance on passwords and resist phishing. Google says its passkeys are tied to the website or app for which they were created, helping prevent a fraudulent site from using one. Google also says biometric data used to unlock a passkey stays on the device and is not shared with Google.
Passkeys are not universally available, and their usability depends on the service, device, and chosen manager. Before relying on them, check the service’s recovery options and whether you can use the passkey on the devices you need. Keep an appropriate account-recovery method for services that still require passwords or do not support your setup.

Secure the manager account and social account separately
Use the protections available on each account rather than assuming one account’s security covers another. Google recommends adding recovery information and enabling two-step verification for Google Account access. Facebook’s help center describes compatible third-party U2F or FIDO2 security keys as a two-factor authentication method, and its security page points users to login alerts and two-factor authentication. These Facebook measures concern Facebook sign-in; they do not establish the security of a password manager. Interfaces and availability may change, so confirm the current options in your account.

Practical decision
- Consider using the manager if it supports your devices, explains its storage and security approach, offers account protections that fit your needs, and provides a recovery and export path you understand.
- Prefer local storage if you specifically want to avoid syncing credentials to the provider account and accept the responsibility of safeguarding the device and planning for its loss.
- Pause before committing if you cannot explain how you would regain access after losing a device or account, or how you would move your credentials elsewhere.
- Regardless of provider, use unique passwords where passwords are required, protect the manager’s unlocking account, and enable passkeys where the service and your devices support them.
