That is not the same as making no network requests: scripts, models, analytics, and MediaPipe metrics may still communicate with other services. And face detection can guide positioning, but it cannot guarantee that an issuing authority will accept a photo.
What “never uploads” can—and cannot—promise
MediaPipe’s privacy notice says input processing happens on-device and that MediaPipe does not send that input data to Google servers. The same notice says performance and utilization metrics are sent to Google, and that developers are responsible for obtaining any required informed consent about metrics processing. Be precise about the promise your app makes. “Your photo is processed in your browser and is not uploaded to our server” is narrower and more verifiable than “nothing ever leaves your device.” An app may fetch its JavaScript, WebAssembly files, or face model from a CDN; the official web guide demonstrates CDN-hosted asset paths. Those requests do not necessarily include the photo, but they mean the app is not offline or network-silent. MediaPipe Face Detector for web.

- Check whether image data, derived landmarks, or camera frames are sent to your server or any third party.
- Audit analytics, error reporting, crash logs, and telemetry separately from image processing.
- Decide whether to bundle or self-host scripts and models if you want to reduce third-party asset requests.
- Inspect the actual network behavior, including optional upload and export paths, before making a privacy claim.
- Explain any metrics processing and obtain required consent; local image processing alone does not settle that question.
Choose the MediaPipe task that fits the feature
The JavaScript package for MediaPipe web vision tasks is @mediapipe/tasks-vision. Use the least complex task that provides the feedback you need. Face Detector documentation.

A detector can support a face-count check, a center guide, or an estimate of relative face size. A landmarker offers more geometry, but additional detail does not turn a visual estimate into an official acceptance decision.
Build still-photo and live-camera flows deliberately
For a still-photo tool, use image mode to analyze one selected or camera-captured image. For live framing hints, video mode can process camera frames. In both cases, use results to prompt the user—such as “move closer” or “face the camera”—rather than silently changing the photo.

MediaPipe’s Face Detector detect() and detectForVideo() calls run synchronously and block the UI thread. Google recommends running them in web workers when needed to keep the interface responsive. A worker changes where computation runs; it does not establish what the rest of the app sends over the network.

- Load the vision fileset and model. The web guide shows resolving the fileset and loading a model. Choose CDN delivery for convenience or bundle/self-host the assets when your deployment and privacy goals call for it.
- Request a still image or camera access only when needed. State what the user is selecting or granting access to, and keep the image-processing path in the browser if that is your promise.
- Run detection and display guidance. Present estimated alignment or face-size feedback as a guide, not as certification.
- Keep the person in control of export. Make clear whether the result is simply downloaded locally or sent anywhere; do not add an upload path that contradicts the privacy claim.
Let the issuing authority and submission route set the rules
There is no universal passport-photo preset. Requirements vary by country, document, and whether a person is uploading a digital image or submitting a print. A production tool should make the chosen authority and use case explicit, then show that authority’s current checklist rather than treating a generic face detector as a rules engine.

UK digital passport photos
GOV.UK requires a plain, light-coloured background without texture or pattern, balanced lighting without shadows on the face or background, and no objects behind the subject. The face must be fully visible, eyes open, expression plain, and mouth closed; glasses must be free of reflections or glare where worn. The image must be in colour, unedited, and free of effects or filters. Some exceptions apply: children under one do not have to have their eyes open; children under six do not need a plain expression; religious or medical headwear may be allowed. U.S. printed passport photos
The U.S. Department of State specifies a 2 x 2 inch (51 x 51 mm) printed photo, with head height from chin to top of head measuring 1 to 1 3/8 inches (25 to 35 mm). The background should be plain white or off-white, without shadows, texture, or objects. Its guidance suggests covering a non-white wall with a white blanket or sheet. U.S. online passport renewal photos
Online renewal has distinct digital-photo instructions; do not assume the printed-photo specification is the complete digital checklist. The State Department says the photo should have been taken within the last six months and warns: “Do not change your photo using computer software, phone apps or filters, or artificial intelligence.” It calls for even lighting and a direct gaze, and allows a natural smile if the mouth is closed. It also says not to edit red eye; take another photo with natural lighting instead. U.S. online renewal digital-photo guidance.

Give feedback without modifying the person’s image
Use landmarks to estimate whether the face is centered, whether the eyes are visible, or whether the face appears too small in the frame. Pair those estimates with actionable prompts before capture: face the camera, improve even lighting, choose a plain background, or remove an obstruction where the applicable rules require it.

Do not treat those signals as a complete compliance check. A detector cannot resolve every legal exception or judge every image-quality condition. Avoid background removal, face reshaping, skin retouching, expression changes, or generated details—especially where the chosen authority says the image must be unedited or forbids software and AI changes. The tool should help a person take a suitable source image, not manufacture compliance after the fact.
Make the limits visible to users
Separate automated guidance from official rules in the interface. Name the issuing authority and route, link to its current instructions, and label face-size or alignment feedback as an estimate. State exactly what happens to the image, what network requests the app makes, and whether any metrics or optional services are involved. The final decision belongs to the authority reviewing the submission; a browser tool cannot promise acceptance.
