Passkeys let you sign in without typing a password: your device or credential manager uses a service-specific cryptographic credential instead. They are designed to resist phishing and password reuse, but they do not make an account invulnerable. Your choice of passkey provider, the service’s fallback sign-in methods, and your recovery plan still matter.
What a passkey is—and what happens when you sign in
A passkey is a discoverable FIDO credential based on public-key cryptography, not a secret you memorize. When you create one for a service, a key pair is associated with that account. The service keeps the public key; the private key stays with the authenticator, such as a phone, computer, password manager, or security key.

At sign-in, the service sends a challenge. Your authenticator uses the private key to produce a response, after you verify locally—often with a device PIN, fingerprint, or face recognition. A biometric is an optional way to unlock the credential on the device; it is not sent to the service. Apple describes the WebAuthn design this way: “The server never learns what the private key is.” Apple Support’s passkey security overview explains the key model and Apple’s syncing and recovery approach; Google likewise says biometric data used for passkey sign-in stays on the device.
FIDO identifies replacing a password as the first or primary authentication factor as passkeys’ main use. Its FIDO2 and WebAuthn overview describes the standards behind this model.

Why passkeys can be safer than passwords
The strongest security advantage is resistance to phishing. A passkey is tied to the service’s origin, so it is not a reusable password that you can be tricked into typing on a lookalike website. It also avoids the risk of reusing the same password across services. FIDO classifies passkeys as phishing-resistant; its 2025 discussion of phishing prevention, part one and part two also stress that the surrounding sign-in and recovery design matters.
A passkey does not guarantee that an entire account cannot be compromised. If a service still allows sign-in with a phishable password, an attacker may target that fallback or exploit a weak account-recovery process. Treat the passkey as a stronger sign-in method, not a substitute for securing every route back into the account.

Choose how you want your passkeys stored
A passkey can be synced across devices by a platform or third-party provider, or kept on one authenticator. The right choice depends on how much portability you want and how you will regain access if a device is lost.

FIDO names platform managers such as iCloud Keychain and Google Password Manager, third-party managers such as 1Password and Dashlane, and FIDO security keys as provider categories—not as a ranking or endorsement. Its passkey explainer covers providers, syncing, and migration. A security key is optional: people using synced passkeys do not need one just to use passkeys.

Plan for a lost phone or a move to a new device
Recovery is part of the security decision, not an afterthought. Before relying on a passkey, review the service’s account-recovery options and the recovery protections for the provider holding the passkey. Where practical, register another authenticator—such as a second passkey or a compatible security key—so one lost device is not your only way in.
When moving to a new platform, FIDO describes several possible routes: set up the same cross-platform provider, use the old device to authenticate and register a new credential, use a security key, or follow the service’s account-recovery process. Which route works depends on the service, provider, devices, and settings involved. Do not assume that every service or passkey automatically transfers.

Adding a passkey may leave your password in place
Creating a passkey does not necessarily delete an existing password or disable other ways to sign in. Google states that adding a passkey to a Google Account “doesn’t change or remove any authentication or recovery factors currently on your account.” The same principle is worth checking service by service: find out whether the password remains usable, what recovery methods are enabled, and whether you can remove a weaker fallback without locking yourself out.

Check compatibility for the service and devices you use
Passkey support depends on the service, operating system, browser, and authenticator; requirements can change. For Google Accounts specifically, Google’s help page lists Windows 10, macOS Ventura, ChromeOS 109 or newer, Android 9, and iOS 16 or newer, as well as supported browsers and FIDO2 security keys. These are Google’s documented requirements, not universal minimums for every passkey service. See Google’s passkey sign-in help for its current instructions and account behavior.

A practical way to start
- Pick an account you already use. Check its sign-in or security settings for a passkey option; support is not identical across services.
- Choose a provider. Decide whether you want the built-in manager for your device ecosystem, a cross-platform third-party provider, or a device-bound security key.
- Set up recovery before depending on the passkey. Confirm recovery details and, where appropriate, add a second passkey or security key.
- Test the route you will need. If possible, confirm you can sign in on another supported device or understand the service’s recovery steps before the original device is unavailable.
- Review fallback sign-in methods. Know whether the account still accepts a password or other recovery factors, and secure those options too.
Are passkeys simpler and faster?
For a user, signing in can be as simple as selecting a passkey and unlocking a device, rather than remembering and typing a password. FIDO Alliance reports passkey sign-ins are “up to 75% faster” and “20% more successful” than passwords or passwords plus SMS one-time codes. The consumer page does not show enough study detail to apply those figures to every service or user, so treat them as FIDO’s reported comparison, not a guaranteed result. See FIDO’s consumer passkey use cases.
