PartyKit is a platform for building and deploying real-time collaborative and multiplayer applications. Developers write JavaScript or TypeScript server code; PartyKit routes HTTP requests and WebSocket connections to a stateful server associated with a room. Cloudflare acquired PartyKit in April 2024, and PartyKit’s current documentation describes each Party as backed by a Cloudflare Durable Object.
What PartyKit is—and what issue 227 announced
Bytes issue 227, published October 2, 2023, reported that PartyKit had become publicly available as an open-source platform for real-time multiplayer apps. The issue also reported a $2.5 million raise from Sequoia Capital. Those are launch-era facts, not a statement of PartyKit’s current funding or commercial terms. Bytes issue 227

The platform is designed for applications where multiple clients need to interact with shared, changing state—for example, collaborative tools or multiplayer experiences. PartyKit’s current documentation presents it as a deployment and hosting platform for stateful, on-demand web servers. It exposes familiar web interfaces, including HTTP and WebSockets, and supports JavaScript and TypeScript server code. PartyKit: How PartyKit works

How the room-and-server model works
A Party represents a stateful room
In PartyKit’s model, a Party is a server instance associated with a room identifier. A client addresses the room it needs, and PartyKit routes its request or connection to the corresponding Party. That gives an application a way to keep room-specific behavior and state together rather than treating every interaction as an unrelated request. PartyKit: How PartyKit works
HTTP and WebSockets serve different interactions
Ordinary HTTP requests can reach a Party, while WebSockets provide a persistent connection suited to exchanging updates while clients are connected. The same room-oriented server model can handle both. PartyKit documents support for clients in browsers, native mobile applications, and embedded devices through standard HTTP and WebSocket interfaces. These are documented platform capabilities, not independent performance measurements. PartyKit: How PartyKit works

Cloudflare Durable Objects provide the backing
PartyKit’s current documentation says each Party is backed by a Cloudflare Durable Object. Cloudflare announced its acquisition of PartyKit on April 5, 2024, describing PartyKit’s origins in 2022 as an effort to make Durable Objects easier to use through familiar components. The 2023 Bytes issue mentioned integrations with Yjs and Automerge; Cloudflare’s 2024 announcement also referred to Yjs and React. Those historical mentions do not establish the exact compatibility of current releases. Check the current API and integration guides before choosing a library or planning an implementation. Choose managed hosting or cloud-prem deployment
PartyKit documents two deployment approaches. The practical distinction is who manages the platform operations and which Cloudflare account the deployment uses. PartyKit: Deploy to your own Cloudflare account
| Deployment route | What the documentation says | When it may fit |
|---|---|---|
| Managed PartyKit platform | PartyKit handles operations and provisions resources such as static assets, Durable Objects, and routes. PartyKit deployment guide | You want the platform to handle the infrastructure setup rather than deploy into your own Cloudflare account. |
| Cloud-prem | The project is deployed into your own Cloudflare account. PartyKit says its platform fee for this setup is free; underlying Cloudflare service usage charges still apply. PartyKit deployment guide Cloudflare acquisition announcement | You have regulatory or account-control needs, already use Cloudflare services, or have a domain configured there. |
Cloud-prem does not mean that the underlying Cloudflare services are free. Cloudflare’s April 2024 announcement said ordinary charges for Workers and other services would still apply and that commercial use would carry no extra PartyKit charge beyond those standard charges. Treat that as the company’s statement at announcement time, not a guarantee of current pricing or terms. Cloudflare’s acquisition announcement

What to take away
- PartyKit gives developers a room-oriented way to build stateful real-time servers, using HTTP and WebSockets.
- Its current architecture is tied to Cloudflare Durable Objects, following Cloudflare’s 2024 acquisition.
- The managed platform and cloud-prem route differ in operations and account control; cloud-prem’s stated free PartyKit platform fee does not remove Cloudflare usage charges.
- The $2.5 million funding figure and public-availability announcement belong to Bytes issue 227 in October 2023, not to a current funding update.
