The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported a median wage of $17.03 per hour for retail salespersons in May 2025. That is an occupation-wide U.S. benchmark, not a part-time/full-time comparison or a guaranteed offer. BLS wage estimates include tips, sales commissions, and bonuses for production targets, but exclude premium pay such as overtime and shift differentials. The lowest 10 percent earned under $13.08 and the highest 10 percent earned over $23.02 in that same data. BLS: Retail Sales Workers

How pay and total earnings differ
More hours do not necessarily mean a higher hourly rate
A full-time worker can earn more over a week or year simply by working more hours at the same rate. To compare offers fairly, separate the hourly wage from the hours the employer expects to schedule. Include any commission or bonus terms, and ask whether the posted hours are a target, a minimum, or only an estimate.

Use the pay structure, not the job-status label
Compare the stated base rate and how variable pay is calculated. If commissions or sales-target bonuses are included, ask how they affect expected earnings and whether the offer describes them as guaranteed or conditional. Do not treat the BLS national median as a forecast for a particular store, city, or position.

Benefits: full-time workers have greater access nationally, but eligibility is employer-specific
In March 2025, 87% of full-time private-industry workers had access to medical care benefits, compared with 25% of part-time private-industry workers, according to BLS. Take-up was 65% for full-time and 42% for part-time private-industry workers. These figures describe private industry nationally, not retail alone. “Access” means a benefit was available; it does not mean the worker enrolled or that a particular employer offers a specific plan. BLS: Employee Benefits in the United States, March 2025
Ask the employer for the plan’s eligibility rules and the employee contribution amounts before deciding. Medical coverage, retirement plans, and paid leave can each have separate requirements; a full-time label does not by itself prove eligibility, and part-time status does not by itself settle it.

Do not confuse the ACA employer test with a universal definition
For the Affordable Care Act’s employer shared responsibility provisions, the IRS treats an employee as full-time for a calendar month if the employee averages at least 30 hours of service per week or has 130 hours of service in that month. This is a test for applicable large employers, generally those averaging at least 50 full-time employees, including full-time equivalents. It is not a general definition of full-time work under federal wage law, and it does not by itself establish that a particular retail worker will receive a specific benefit. BLS says many retail sales workers are employed full time, and their schedules may include evenings and weekends. Workers may also pick up extra shifts or part-time work, particularly during holidays and other peak periods. A part-time position therefore is not necessarily a flexible one, and a full-time job does not guarantee a standard Monday-to-Friday pattern. BLS: Retail Sales Workers

Before accepting either kind of role, ask the manager or recruiter:
- How many hours per week should I expect, and is there a minimum number of hours?
- How long are typical shifts, and how far in advance is the schedule posted?
- How often do schedules change after posting, and how are changes communicated?
- Are evenings, weekends, holidays, or peak-season shifts required?
- Can weekly hours vary substantially, and is extra work optional or expected?
What “part-time” and “full-time” mean under federal wage law
The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) does not define full-time or part-time employment. The U.S. Department of Labor states, “The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) does not address part-time employment.” An employer’s labels and benefit policies therefore matter, while the FLSA’s wage protections apply according to the law’s coverage and exemption rules—not simply because a worker is called part-time. For covered, nonexempt retail employees, federal law generally requires at least the applicable minimum wage and overtime pay of at least 1.5 times the regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek. Certain employees of retail or service establishments paid primarily by commissions may qualify for an overtime exemption if the law’s conditions are met. State and local laws can provide additional protections, so the federal baseline is not the whole answer for every location.
