That answers the spacecraft-record version of the question; it does not establish the closest approach by every natural object, such as a comet.
How close did Parker Solar Probe get?
NASA reported that Parker Solar Probe passed about 3.8 million miles (6.1 million kilometers) above the Sun’s surface on December 24, 2024. NASA’s December 27, 2024 encounter report describes this as the closest pass by a human-made object. The measurement is a distance above the visible solar surface, not a distance from the Sun’s center.

The spacecraft was traveling at about 430,000 miles per hour during the encounter, according to NASA. That is its speed, not its distance from the Sun.

No. “Touching the Sun” is NASA’s shorthand for flying through the corona, the Sun’s outer atmosphere. Parker passed through this region; it did not land on or collide with the solar surface.

The distinction matters because the corona is extraordinarily hot, while the spacecraft’s distance is measured from the Sun’s surface. NASA says the corona can exceed 1 million degrees Fahrenheit. Parker’s carbon-composite heat shield was designed to protect the spacecraft during its close passes.
How can a spacecraft survive that close?
Parker is designed to keep its instruments and spacecraft bus in the shield’s shadow. NASA’s December 2024 mission feature gives the heat shield a design temperature of 2,600 degrees Fahrenheit. NASA’s Parker Solar Probe reference page describes the shield as 4.5 inches (11.43 centimeters) thick and able to withstand temperatures approaching 2,500 degrees Fahrenheit. Those are figures from separate NASA descriptions, not a single combined specification.

The shield makes the mission possible, but the point of flying so close is scientific measurement rather than setting a distance record. Parker’s instruments measure magnetic and electric fields, plasma, and energetic particles, and image the solar wind.
What is Parker Solar Probe trying to learn?
The spacecraft samples the solar environment where key processes begin. NASA describes the mission’s goals as investigating why the corona is hotter than the Sun’s surface, tracing the origin and acceleration of the solar wind, and studying how energetic particles accelerate.

Parker launched on August 12, 2018. Seven Venus flybys helped shape its orbit so it could make repeated close approaches to the Sun. NASA’s December 27, 2024 report confirmed the completed record pass; the earlier December 20 preview described the planned encounter.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Could a comet or another natural object have gone closer?
Possibly, but the spacecraft record should not be presented as the record for “any object.” NASA describes sungrazing comets as comets that approach very close to the Sun at perihelion, and says they are often disrupted or vaporized. Natural bodies therefore belong in the broader comparison.

NASA reported in April 2026 that comet C/2026 A1 (MAPS) approached the Sun and that only a dust cloud appeared after its closest approach. That report shows a natural object making a close approach; it does not establish MAPS as the closest natural object ever, or provide a comparable all-time natural-object record. A sound ranking would need reliable orbital data and a consistent distance reference, such as distance from the Sun’s center or above its visible surface.

So the defensible answer is specific: Parker Solar Probe holds the documented human-made-object record in NASA’s encounter reporting, at about 3.8 million miles above the solar surface on December 24, 2024. The broader all-object record is not established by the cited NASA reports.
