When Paramount+ is not working, start by restarting the device running the app. Then check that the device, operating system, app version, plan and country are supported, install available updates, and restart your modem or router when the platform’s guidance calls for it. A black or purple picture with sound on a Roku connected to a television needs a separate HDMI check. If the problem survives these steps, use Paramount+’s support pages for known issues, error codes and account help; one person’s failure does not prove that the entire service is down.
The order matters because each step rules out a different cause. A restart addresses a temporary device or app state. Compatibility and software checks address support gaps. Router testing addresses a local connection problem, while the Roku HDMI sequence addresses the path from an external player to the TV. Keep those branches separate so you do not reset an account problem or buy hardware for a software issue.

First, identify what is failing
The quickest fix depends on the device and the symptom. Before changing settings, note whether Paramount+ fails on one title or every title, and whether the app crashes, buffers, shows an error code, plays sound without a picture, or rejects your sign-in.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| What you see | Most useful first branch | What it can distinguish |
|---|---|---|
| The app closes, freezes or will not launch | Restart the device, then update the app and system | A temporary device/app state versus an update or compatibility problem |
| Constant buffering or playback stops | Restart the device; then restart the modem/router if the platform guidance recommends it | A local network or device issue versus a title or account issue |
| An error code appears | Record the exact code and check Paramount+’s error-code help | A known, documented condition versus an unspecified failure |
| Black or purple video with audio on an external Roku | Follow the HDMI connection tests in the Roku branch below | A display-path problem versus the Paramount+ app itself |
| Only one device fails | Compare it with another supported device using the same account | A platform-specific problem versus an account or service-wide problem |
Do not diagnose a platform-wide outage from one symptom. Paramount+ separates streaming help, known issues, error codes, supported devices and account or billing topics in its support portal.

Write down the device before you begin. “TV” is not enough: support may need the manufacturer, exact model, operating-system version and whether the app is built into the television or running on an external player. Also note whether other apps stream normally. That comparison is evidence, not a diagnosis: it can show that the home connection is working for at least some services, but Paramount+ support still needs the exact title and error behavior.
Check compatibility before deeper troubleshooting
A paid Paramount+ subscription does not guarantee that every device, feature or plan works in every country. Check the official supported-device list for the exact hardware model, operating-system version, subscription plan and country before assuming the app is broken.
Examples of supported configurations
- Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K generations 1 through 3 are listed with tvOS 16 or later.
- Samsung Smart TVs from 2017 are listed when they run Tizen.
These are examples, not a complete global list. Availability can vary by plan and country, so a model that appears on a general device list may still lack a particular feature in your market or subscription tier. If your model or operating system is absent from the current list, app resets and router changes are unlikely to make it supported; use a listed device instead or ask Paramount+ support about the exact configuration.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Compatibility is also a useful explanation for an app that installs but will not play. Installation alone does not establish that every playback feature is supported. Check the current list again after an operating-system upgrade or when traveling, because country and plan eligibility can affect what is available.
Restart the device running Paramount+
Restarting clears a temporary app or operating-system state without changing your account. Do this before reinstalling the app or changing network settings. Wait for the device to finish starting, open Paramount+ again and test the same title.
Samsung Smart TV
- Turn the television off.
- Unplug it from power and wait five minutes.
- Plug it back in and turn it on.
- Launch Paramount+ and try playback again.
Paramount+ Support describes this as the first action for playback problems on a Samsung TV. If playback is still failing, restart the modem or router, then relaunch Paramount+.
The five-minute interval is part of the platform-specific instruction; a quick tap of the remote’s power button is not the same procedure. Once the TV is back on, test the title that originally failed before making several changes at once.
Apple TV
- Open Settings.
- Choose General.
- Select Restart.
- After Apple TV returns to the Home screen, open Paramount+ and test playback.
If the restart does not help, continue with the software-update step below.

Roku
Use Roku’s built-in restart control, then check for Roku system and Paramount+ app updates. The Paramount+ guidance retrieved for Roku is in Italian, so menu wording can differ from the labels on an English-language device. Follow the equivalent restart and update controls shown on your Roku rather than relying on an untranslated label.
Do not jump to HDMI testing merely because the app is slow. Reserve that branch for the distinctive symptom of a black or purple picture with audio on an external Roku connected to a TV.
Install app and system updates
An old app or operating system can fail even when your subscription and internet connection are fine. Check both layers: the Paramount+ app and the device software. Restart the device after an update if it does not do so automatically, then test the app again.

Open the television’s app-management or app-store area and check for a Paramount+ update. Samsung’s Paramount+ troubleshooting guidance includes checking for app updates after the restart procedure. The exact menu names vary by Tizen release, so use the update control presented by your TV.
Apple TV software update
- Open Settings.
- Choose System.
- Select Software Updates.
- Choose Update Software and install an available update.
When the update finishes, reopen Paramount+ and test the title that failed.
Roku system and app updates
From Roku’s system and channel-management controls, check for a Roku software update and an update for Paramount+. Restart the Roku after updating if prompted, then test playback. If only Paramount+ is failing while other updated apps work, keep the diagnosis focused on the app, account or title rather than replacing network hardware immediately.
Record what changed after an update. If an update resolves the problem, the app or system version is useful information to include in any later support request. If an update is unavailable, do not assume that repeatedly checking will add support for an otherwise unsupported model.
Restart the modem or router when playback still fails
For Samsung TV playback problems, Paramount+ specifically recommends restarting the modem or router after restarting the television. Power-cycle the network equipment using the procedure supplied by your internet provider or router manufacturer, wait until the connection is back, and relaunch Paramount+.

This step is most relevant when several titles buffer or fail on the same home connection. It is not a universal cure for sign-in errors, unsupported devices or a television that has sound but no picture. If other devices can stream normally and only one supported device fails, return to that device’s restart, update and compatibility checks.
Change one variable at a time where possible. Testing the app immediately after the router is ready tells you more than restarting the TV, router and account simultaneously. If playback still fails, note whether the failure occurs on Wi-Fi and whether another supported device on the same connection behaves the same way; give those observations to support without claiming they prove an outage.
Use the Roku HDMI branch only for a black or purple picture with audio
Paramount+’s Roku guidance treats a black or purple screen with sound as a possible device or display-connection problem. This is a different symptom from buffering, an app crash or a login failure. Keep the following tests limited to an external Roku connected to a TV.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Restart the Roku.
- Disconnect and reconnect the HDMI connection at the Roku and television.
- Connect the Roku directly to the TV if it currently passes through another device.
- Reverse the HDMI connection where the plugs and equipment allow it.
- Try another HDMI port on the television.
- If available, test another HDMI cable as an optional diagnostic.
- If possible, test the Roku on another television.
If the picture returns after changing a port, direct-connecting the Roku or testing another cable, the display path is implicated. If the symptom remains, Roku support is the next platform-specific route. Do not treat an HDMI cable as a general Paramount+ fix: it does not address buffering, account errors, unsupported software or a service outage.
Start with the existing cable and ports. A replacement cable is only an optional test after reconnecting the current one and trying another port or TV. The documented steps do not establish a particular cable brand, price or specification as necessary, and they do not justify buying several cables.
Separate a title problem from a device or account problem
Test another title
Try a different Paramount+ program. If one title fails while others play on the same device, record the title and the exact behavior and report it through Paramount+ support. Avoid assuming that a single-title failure means your television, router or subscription is defective.
Test the same account on another supported device
Use the same account on another device that appears on Paramount+’s current supported list. A second device that plays normally points toward the original device, operating system, app installation or display connection. If supported devices fail in the same way, collect the error details before escalating; the account or service may need attention.
Keep the comparison fair: use the same account and, when possible, the same title. A different plan, country or unsupported model can introduce a separate compatibility issue and make the result misleading.

Record the exact error
Write down the complete on-screen message or error code, not just “it does not work.” Also note the device model, operating-system version, Paramount+ app version when visible, country, plan, affected title and the steps already attempted. These details let support place the problem in the correct streaming, known-issue, error-code or account category.
What to do when sign-in, billing or account access fails
A playback restart will not resolve an account or billing problem. If the app opens but sign-in fails, the subscription is not recognized or billing information needs attention, use Paramount+’s account and billing help. Keep the exact message and the account email available, but do not share a password or payment details in a public support forum.
If the same account works on another supported device, mention that comparison. It tells support that the credentials can authenticate somewhere and narrows the issue to a platform, app or device path. If the account fails everywhere, use the account or billing route rather than repeating HDMI or television resets.
Check for a known issue or outage without guessing
The available troubleshooting material does not establish a live outage status. A single failed stream is not proof that Paramount+ is down globally. Check the current Paramount+ support portal’s Known Issues information and error-code guidance for a time-sensitive service notice. If no notice matches, submit the device, software, country, plan, title, exact error and completed steps.
Do not infer an outage solely because social posts mention a problem, and do not infer that your home network is at fault solely because one app fails. Comparing another supported device and, where practical, another network can provide useful evidence, but support should make the final account or service determination.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A complete troubleshooting order
- Classify the symptom. Decide whether it is a crash, buffering, an error code, a sign-in problem, or black/purple video with audio.
- Identify the platform. Record the exact TV, Apple TV, Roku or other device model and operating-system version.
- Verify support. Check the current device list, plan and country requirements.
- Restart the device. Use the platform-specific procedure, including the five-minute Samsung TV unplug interval.
- Update software. Check the Paramount+ app and the device operating system.
- Restart the modem/router. Do this when the platform guidance calls for it, especially after the Samsung TV restart.
- Run the Roku HDMI tests. Only when the symptom is a black or purple picture with audio on an external Roku.
- Compare. Try another title and, if available, another supported device with the same account.
- Escalate with evidence. Use Paramount+ support for known issues, error codes, streaming help or account and billing assistance.
When replacement hardware is—and is not—reasonable
Do not buy hardware merely because Paramount+ buffers or refuses a login. The documented physical-hardware test applies to the Roku display symptom: black or purple video with audio. First reconnect the existing HDMI plugs, use another TV port and connect the Roku directly. A different cable is an optional test if those checks do not isolate the problem; it is not a guaranteed remedy or a recommendation to replace equipment.
For unsupported devices, the relevant remedy is a supported model or software environment, subject to plan and country availability. For account errors, the relevant remedy is Paramount+ account or billing support. Keeping these branches separate prevents an expensive fix for the wrong cause.

Official guidance in context
Paramount+ Support’s Samsung TV article states: “If you are having problems playing content on the Paramount+ app on your Samsung TV* the first thing we would recommend trying is restarting your device by following these steps:” That instruction is platform-specific guidance, not an independent test or a promise that every playback failure will be fixed by restarting.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is Paramount+ not working on my TV but working elsewhere?
Check the TV model, operating system and country or plan eligibility first. Then restart the TV, update the Paramount+ app and TV software, and test the same title again. If the account works on another supported device, report the TV model and software details to Paramount+ support.
Recommended Free Tools
How long should I unplug a Samsung TV?
Paramount+’s Samsung guidance says to turn the TV off, unplug it, wait five minutes, plug it back in and relaunch the app. This is more specific than simply pressing the remote’s power button.
What should I do when Paramount+ buffers constantly?
Restart the device first. For Samsung TV playback problems, Paramount+ also recommends restarting the modem or router. Test another title and, if possible, another supported device before concluding that the service is down.
Why do I hear sound but see a black or purple screen on Roku?
Treat that as a Roku display-path symptom. Restart the Roku, reconnect or reverse the HDMI connection, connect directly to the TV, try another HDMI port, and optionally test another cable or TV. Contact Roku support if the symptom remains.
Should I buy a new HDMI cable for Paramount+?
Only use another cable as an optional diagnostic for the Roku black-or-purple-screen-with-audio symptom, after checking the existing plugs and another TV port. An HDMI cable is not a general fix for buffering, login errors or unsupported devices.

How do I know whether my device is supported?
Check Paramount+’s current supported-device list for the exact model and operating-system version, then confirm plan and country availability. Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K generations 1–3 are examples listed with tvOS 16 or later; Samsung Smart TVs from 2017 are examples running Tizen.
What information should I give Paramount+ support?
Provide the device and model, operating-system and app versions when visible, country, plan, affected title, exact error text or code, completed troubleshooting steps and whether the same account works on another supported device.
Is Paramount+ down for everyone?
A single failed stream cannot establish a global outage, and no live outage status is implied by these troubleshooting steps. Check the current Paramount+ Known Issues and error-code pages for a time-sensitive notice, then contact support if nothing matches.
The Bottom Line
Start with the device and symptom, not a shopping list. Verify that the exact model, software, plan and country are supported; restart the device; install app and system updates; and restart the modem or router when the platform guidance recommends it. Use HDMI tests only for an external Roku showing a black or purple picture with audio. If the issue persists, compare another title or supported device and give Paramount+ support the exact error and setup details.
