Parallel means handling multiple bits or operations at the same time; serial means handling them one after another. In data communication, the terms describe how bits travel between devices. In processing, they describe how work is carried out. Which approach is preferable depends on the system and task—not on the label alone.
What do parallel and serial mean in data communication?
Parallel communication sends several bits at the same time over separate data lines. Serial communication sends bits successively over a serial data path, reducing the number of data lines needed. Texas Instruments illustrates the difference with a byte sent across eight parallel data lines at once versus bits sent one after another in serial communication. That eight-line example explains the concept; it is not a universal interface specification or a performance benchmark. Texas Instruments’ presentation on SPI communications also notes that an interface may use separate lines for return traffic, so “serial” does not necessarily mean the entire connection consists of one physical wire.

Serial is a broad approach, not one protocol
SPI and I2C are examples of serial interface standards discussed by Texas Instruments. They illustrate that serial describes a way of transferring data, not a single protocol or wiring arrangement. The appropriate comparison for a particular interface is its data-line requirements and how it transfers bits—not an assumption that one category is automatically faster.

What do parallel and serial mean in processing?
Serial processing carries out operations sequentially, without overlap between successive processing times. Parallel processing works on multiple objects, operations, or subsystems simultaneously; their work may finish at different times. This distinction is described in James T. Townsend’s article on serial and parallel processing in Psychological Science.

Parallel processing can help when a task contains work that can be divided and run at once. But it also introduces costs: parts of the task may require communication or synchronization, use extra computation or memory, wait idle, or compete for resources. Some work may also have to remain serial. Cornell’s CS 5220 performance notes caution against assuming that parallel runtime is simply serial runtime divided by the number of processors.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is parallel always faster than serial?
No. Parallel communication transfers multiple bits in one event in the illustrative example, but uses more data lines. That structural difference alone does not establish which link will be faster end to end. Texas Instruments notes that serial communication is widely used in modern devices and reduces the number of communication lines; the right design depends on the needs of the interface.

For processing, speed depends on how much work can genuinely happen in parallel and whether the benefit outweighs coordination overhead, memory use, idle time, and resource contention. A task with substantial sequential work or costly coordination may gain little from parallel execution. Cornell’s notes explain why processor count by itself is not a reliable measure of speedup.

How to compare the terms in context
- For a communication link: compare the number of data lines, how many bits move per transfer event, and the requirements of the interface.
- For a processing task: consider what portion can run in parallel, the coordination and resource costs, and the total runtime.
- When reading a specification: check whether “parallel” and “serial” refer to data transmission or to execution of operations; the same words describe different things in those contexts.
