Paper Boy S3 is a DIY Game Boy emulator project built around an M5Stack PaperS3 E Ink development kit. Coverage reports that it runs most games at roughly 30–60 frames per second, depending on the game. The sources reviewed describe touchscreen input and limited Bluetooth gamepad support—but do not verify that the device docks into a NES controller.
What Paper Boy S3 is—and what the reports confirm
Paper Boy S3 turns an E Ink development board into a small Game Boy-style emulator. It is a build project, not a finished handheld being sold as a commercial product. The likely match to the device described in the headline is not certain, so the NES-controller detail should not be treated as a confirmed feature.

The hardware identified in coverage is the M5Stack PaperS3, also referred to as M5PaperS3: a 4.7-inch, 960 × 540 E Ink touchscreen driven by an ESP32-S3 microcontroller. These are specifications reported for the development kit, not measurements of a separate retail handheld. CNX Software and Notebookcheck describe the project and hardware.
How fast does it run Game Boy games?
CNX Software reports performance of about 30–60 FPS for most games, with the frame rate varying by title. It says Tetris is especially demanding, while Super Mario Land reaches the highest frame rate. The emulator displays the Game Boy image in a 160 × 144-pixel area on the higher-resolution panel. Those figures are project performance reported by CNX, not independent benchmark results.

The performance approach takes advantage of the PaperS3’s raw row-and-column display interface to update changed pixels rather than relying on a whole-screen refresh. That helps explain how a microcontroller-driven E Ink display can be used for interactive gameplay; it does not mean every game holds a fixed 30 or 60 FPS. CNX Software’s project report details the reported display method and game-to-game variation.
What controls does it support?
The touchscreen provides simulated Game Boy buttons on the lower portion of the display. Reports also describe Bluetooth gamepad support, including Bluetooth LE joypad input, but compatibility is limited. TechSpot notes that controller responsiveness and accuracy still need work. The available coverage does not document a physical NES-controller dock, so there is no verified basis for claiming that the handheld plugs into or sits inside one.

Can you buy one or build it yourself?
Paper Boy S3 is not reported as a commercially available finished handheld. Notebookcheck says project data is available through GitLab for people who own the relevant development kit. The PaperS3 board is discontinued and reported as difficult to source, so present-day availability is uncertain; no current stock has been established.

The older M5Paper is mentioned as a related board, but it uses an ESP32 rather than the PaperS3’s ESP32-S3 and would require further modifications.
