You can make a simple, experimental lens diffuser with sheer pantyhose and an elastic band. Stretch a small piece of fabric across the front of your lens, take a test photo, and adjust the tension, color and framing until you get the glow you want. The fabric can soften details and alter highlights, but the result depends on your lens and lighting.
What you need
- A piece of sheer, low-denier pantyhose or stocking. Avoid thick or opaque fabric, which may block too much of the scene.
- An elastic band that can hold the fabric around the lens barrel without obstructing the lens opening.
- Your camera and lens. Keep any focus or zoom controls you need accessible.
This is a no-cut, no-glass experiment: the fabric sits in front of the lens rather than replacing or modifying it. Do not pull the elastic so tightly that it presses on or risks damaging the lens.

How to make and use the diffuser
- Start with a small piece of sheer fabric. Place it over the front of the lens, leaving enough material to secure around the barrel.
- Hold it in place with an elastic band. Make sure the fabric covers the image area evenly and the band does not cover controls you need to operate.
- Take a test photo. Check the image on your camera, especially for a visible weave, uneven patterns, color cast or loss of contrast.
- Adjust the tension. Pulling the fabric taut generally makes it easier to see through and reduces the effect. Looser fabric can create more diffusion, but folds and waves may also produce visible patterns.
- Change one variable at a time. Try a different fabric color, tension, focal length or direction of light, then compare the resulting frames. This makes it easier to identify what changed the look.

Color and weave affect more than softness. The outcomes below are practical examples reported in Digital Camera World tutorials, not guaranteed results for every fabric, camera or scene.

If you use colored hosiery, consider setting white balance manually. Automatic white balance may compensate for the fabric’s tint, changing the color effect you intended.

How tension, lens choice and lighting change the result
Tension and folds
A taut layer tends to show less of its texture and produce a weaker soft-focus effect. Slack fabric can increase diffusion, but irregular folds may appear as waves or patterns in the photograph. Reposition the cloth if the pattern distracts from your subject.
Focal length
Focal length affects how apparent the fabric pattern looks. In one Digital Camera World tutorial, the material was more apparent in a 24mm example and less distinct in a telephoto example. Another related tutorial reports that longer focal lengths compress the net pattern and increase diffusion. Treat these as observations from particular setups, not a universal rule; check your own composition at the focal length you plan to use.

Light and exposure
The direction and brightness of light can change the effect, particularly with dark fabric and bright highlights. Review exposure as well as softness: a related Digital Camera World tutorial reported a loss of one-third to one-half stop with its netted-lens setup. That figure describes that tutorial’s setup, not a specification for all pantyhose, lenses or cameras. If your image looks darker, compare a test frame with and without the fabric and adjust exposure as needed.
When to use a camera diffusion filter instead
A commercial diffusion or mist filter is an optional alternative if you want a reusable accessory with a more repeatable effect. Such filters are designed to soften detail, bloom highlights or lower contrast, depending on their type and strength. They will not necessarily reproduce the irregular texture or tint of fabric.

Before buying one, check the filter thread diameter printed on your lens or in its specifications and match it to the filter. Consider the character and strength of diffusion you want, as well as whether you want a neutral, warm or contrast-lowering look. A filter buying guide is not evidence that a particular model will suit every lens or scene.

- Photograph a detailed subject with the fabric off the lens, then repeat with it in place.
- Compare sharp detail, highlight glow, shadow detail, contrast and any visible weave.
- Repeat with tighter and looser fabric, keeping the composition and lighting as similar as possible.
- Try another fabric color only after you have found a useful tension; otherwise, it is difficult to tell which change caused the difference.
- Keep the version that supports the subject. A visible pattern or heavy glow can be an intentional effect, but it may compete with the image if you wanted only subtle softening.
Digital Camera World’s current tutorial for this technique, published October 4, 2026, emphasizes that the result takes experimentation because fabric, lens choice and the way light falls on the lens all matter. Its examples illustrate possibilities rather than promising a particular look from every setup.
