Its site connector makes an outbound connection and uses NAT traversal to reach the network behind restrictive firewalls. That claim applies to the private network connected through the site connector—not necessarily to the Pangolin server itself, which still needs a deployment and network configuration.
How Pangolin reaches a private network without port forwarding
Pangolin is an open-source networking and access platform built on WireGuard. It can be self-hosted or used through the managed Pangolin Cloud service. A site connector runs inside or near the private network and establishes an outbound tunnel, allowing authorized users to reach resources there without giving that network a public IP address or opening inbound ports on its firewall, according to the Pangolin project.

The connector is not the same thing as having no internet-facing component anywhere. The Pangolin deployment and connector still need to be configured, and the control server may have its own reachability and firewall requirements. The reviewed project descriptions do not specify the exact ports or rules for every deployment, so use the current installation documentation for the version and hosting arrangement you choose.
What you can access—and how
Pangolin offers two distinct access patterns. Choose based on whether you want to open an app in a browser or connect to a private resource as though you were on the network.
#1 Best Overall
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
| Access method | Typical resources | How you connect | Access model |
|---|---|---|---|
| Browser-based proxy | HTTPS web apps; browser access to VNC, RDP, and SSH | Open the resource through a browser | Authentication and granular access controls are described by Pangolin |
| Client-based private-resource access | SSH servers, databases, RDP, individual hosts, port ranges, and network ranges | Use a Pangolin client to reach assigned private resources | Resources can be assigned to users, roles, or machine clients; host and CIDR resources can use friendly DNS aliases |
These capabilities and resource examples are described in Pangolin’s project feature information and release notes. The project’s descriptions do not establish comparative speed or performance for the two methods.
What the connector does
The Newt connector repository describes a flow in which the connector registers with Pangolin using an ID and secret, obtains a session token, keeps a WebSocket open for control messages, and brings up a user-space WireGuard tunnel using a supplied endpoint and public key. The repository also says Newt is being phased out in favor of the Pangolin CLI, suggesting pangolin site up as the direction for current use. Check the live Newt repository and the official installation documentation before following an older guide or choosing a connector workflow; commands and setup can change by version.

- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
Managed service or self-hosted deployment?
Pangolin lists a managed cloud option as well as Community and Enterprise editions for self-hosting. With the managed option, Pangolin operates the service infrastructure; with self-hosting, you take responsibility for operating the Pangolin deployment. The right choice depends on whether you want to maintain that server and on the edition’s applicable licensing terms. The project describes Pangolin as lightweight and suitable for a small server, but the reviewed material does not give a minimum hardware specification or tested home-server models.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Security depends on configuration and permissions
Pangolin describes identity-aware, resource-level controls: administrators define resources and grant access to users, roles, or clients. That can help limit who can reach which service, but a feature description is not an independent security audit or a guarantee that a particular installation is secure. Review the current documentation for your deployment, configure permissions deliberately, and protect the credentials and systems involved.
