That reduces setup friction, but a highly available deployment still needs multiple nodes, shared services, network and DNS configuration, and a load balancer you provide. Pangolin announced 1.23 on September 15, 2026; version 1.24 was announced on September 30, so 1.23 is the release in focus here, not the latest release as of October 5, 2026.
What changed in Pangolin 1.23?
Before 1.23, Pangolin said clustering with shared state, failover, and regional distribution was possible, but deployment relied on external components—including a custom DNS server and certificate manager—and required an engagement alongside Enterprise Edition. Version 1.23 brought DNS resolution and certificate management into the main Pangolin container and documented a streamlined deployment path.

The release also added sites to the Pangolin CLI, an organization list and support for multiple server admins in the server admin panel, and improvements to the Resource Launcher side panel. The CLI changes matter to cluster operators because Pangolin Sites are the supported connector type in the current clustering requirements. The CLI can start a site, run as a container, or install and manage it as a persistent host service. Existing Newt deployments continue to work, and Pangolin says Newt remains available.

How does a Pangolin cluster handle traffic and failover?
Shared state and per-node services
Each Pangolin node serves the UI and API and runs its own Traefik and Gerbil. Nodes share persistent state through PostgreSQL and coordinate real-time messaging and cache state through Valkey or another Redis-compatible pub/sub service. Pangolin synchronizes certificate and router files for each node’s local Traefik. Gerbil manages WireGuard tunnels to site connectors and can route a resource request to the node holding the relevant tunnel, including when DNS caching sends traffic to a different node.

- Tight tolerance manufacturing: These M6 rack screws are precision made to strict metric standards with average error below 0.01mm. The tight-tolerance thread design creates a snug fit and even force distribution, resisting slipping and deformation to keep rack-mounted hardware securely fixed. Works great with rack studs for square hole cabinet setups
The load balancer’s role
A front-end load balancer health-checks the Pangolin nodes and sends dashboard, API, and DNS traffic to healthy nodes under a consistent entry domain. It does not itself determine which node holds a resource tunnel; Pangolin’s DNS and Gerbil components handle that routing. Pangolin’s documentation is explicit: “You must provide your own HA load balancer in front of the cluster – this can be a cloud load balancer or a self-hosted one.”
What happens when a node fails?
The load balancer stops sending traffic to an unhealthy node. Sites connected to that node detect ping failures and reconnect to another online node; DNS then updates resource resolution. Pangolin says this can cause a brief interruption, typically a few seconds, while detection and reconnection happen. That is automated failover, not a promise that active sessions will never be interrupted.

What does the documented minimum deployment require?
| Component or requirement | What the deployment needs |
|---|---|
| Pangolin nodes | At least two nodes, each with a public static IP reachable from the internet. |
| Shared state services | PostgreSQL plus Valkey or another Redis-compatible pub/sub service, reachable by both nodes. |
| Load balancer | An operator-provided highly available load balancer in front of the cluster; Pangolin does not provide it as part of the cluster. |
| Network connectivity | Internal connectivity between the Pangolin nodes, plus firewall rules for dashboard/API, DNS, resources, WireGuard, relay, and the Gerbil API. |
| Domains and DNS | A dashboard domain pointed at the load balancer and a separate nameserver subdomain delegated to Pangolin’s built-in DNS. |
| Clustered site connectors | Pangolin Sites. The current requirements guide excludes local sites and basic WireGuard sites from clustered deployments. |
The requirements guide describes a minimum three-host topology: two Pangolin nodes and a host for PostgreSQL and the pub/sub service. That third host is not mandatory if the shared services run elsewhere: Pangolin allows managed cloud databases or an existing cluster, provided both Pangolin nodes can reach them.
The guide lists UDP 53 for DNS, TCP 3000 for dashboard/API access from the load balancer, and TCP 3004 for inter-node Gerbil API access. It also calls for the public resource and tunnel ports; use the current requirements guide to identify and allow the needed ports for your deployment rather than assuming those three entries are the complete firewall policy.

How do you deploy the documented two-node cluster?
- Prepare the infrastructure. Provision two Pangolin hosts with public static IPs and internal connectivity. Arrange PostgreSQL and Valkey or a compatible pub/sub service, either on infrastructure you operate or through managed services. Set up an operator-provided highly available load balancer that can health-check the nodes and route the required traffic.
- Configure DNS and firewall rules. Point the dashboard domain at the load balancer and delegate a separate nameserver subdomain to Pangolin’s DNS. Open the required dashboard/API, DNS, resource, tunnel, relay, and inter-node paths. The documented port list includes UDP 53, TCP 3000, and TCP 3004; consult the current requirements for the remaining public resource and tunnel ports.
- Configure both Pangolin nodes consistently. Follow Pangolin’s “Deploy a Cluster” walkthrough and reference configuration. Set the same
server.secreton every node, configure them to use the shared PostgreSQL database and Redis-compatible pub/sub service, and enable only one ACME client to avoid nodes issuing conflicting certificates. Change example credentials and replace placeholder values before production. - Set up TLS for the right domain. The walkthrough places dashboard-domain TLS termination at the load balancer. The node ACME client issues certificates for resource domains under the delegated nameserver zone. Treat these as separate certificate responsibilities in your configuration.
- Connect supported sites and verify the path. Use Pangolin Sites for clustered connectors. The walkthrough’s checks include each node’s health endpoint, DNS delegation, dashboard reachability, site connection, and a resource certificate and request. Test both normal routing and node failure behavior before relying on the cluster.
Does Pangolin 1.23 clustering require Enterprise Edition?
Official Pangolin sources do not agree. The September 15, 2026 release announcement says high availability is included in the self-serve Scale tier and custom Enterprise contracts. The current clustering overview, requirements page, and deployment guide instead say clustering is available only in Enterprise Edition. Pangolin’s pricing page lists Basic, Team, Business, and Enterprise tiers but does not resolve the conflict.
Because eligibility is material to whether this deployment path is available to you, confirm the current terms with Pangolin before choosing a tier or planning a production cluster. The documentation conflict does not establish a definitive price or edition requirement.

When is this release a good fit?
Pangolin 1.23 is most useful to operators who need multiple Pangolin nodes and are prepared to run or procure the shared services, load balancing, DNS delegation, and network connectivity around them. Its main improvement is bringing formerly external DNS and certificate-management pieces into the product and making the deployment path self-service; it does not remove the infrastructure or operational work that high availability entails.
Before committing, decide who will operate PostgreSQL and the Redis-compatible pub/sub service, whether the load balancer is cloud-managed or self-hosted, and how backups, database failover, DNS, and certificate operations will be handled. Pangolin documents both cloud and self-hosted load balancers and permits managed database services, but the choice depends on your network reachability and operational responsibilities.
