This guide reflects the official Palworld 1.0 update of July 9, 2026. Version 1.0 raised the player level cap from 65 to 80 and added 72 Pals, bringing the total to 287, so older guides can stop well before the current endgame.

What changed in Palworld 1.0
Leveling advice written before version 1.0 can be misleading for two reasons. First, the player level cap is now 80 rather than 65. Second, the 1.0 release expanded the Pal roster to 287 species, adding 72 Pals. That creates more opportunities to gain experience through collection, but it also means a route designed to finish at the former cap is incomplete.
Pocketpair’s official July 9, 2026 changelog also added exploration experience for clearing some dungeons and enemy bases. Exploration is therefore part of a current leveling route, not merely a way to reveal scenery. The same update describes watchtowers as map-revealing locations that function as fast-travel points, making them important efficiency tools as you travel between activities.

Exact rewards can change with later patches, and no primary, version-locked table of XP per action or reproducible time-to-level benchmark is established here. Treat the comparisons below as route-planning guidance rather than promises of a fixed number of levels per hour.
How experience is earned
Palworld leveling is built from several overlapping activities. The best choice depends on your progression stage, equipment, travel distance, and whether you want collection progress or loot in addition to XP.
- Capturing Pals: Captures are the core early-game method, especially when you stop after the first 12 examples of each species.
- Dungeon completion and Alpha captures: A dungeon’s final Alpha Pal can provide nearly twice the experience of capturing a non-dungeon version, according to the dungeon reference. The run also includes ordinary captures, chests, and discovery.
- Exploration: Activating watchtowers and fast-travel points keeps movement productive. Clearing some dungeons and enemy bases now awards exploration experience.
- Combat and high-level content: Alpha encounters, Oil Rig raids, and legendary-Pal captures belong to later progression because their rewards must be weighed against failure risk and consumable costs.
- World settings: The EXP Rate slider changes experience gain globally in a world or server where you have permission to edit settings.
There is no single activity that is always fastest. A route that gives less XP per encounter can still win on XP per minute if it has short travel, low healing requirements, and almost no chance of a failed run.
Early game: capture the first 12 of every species
For a new character, capture variety beats repeatedly defeating the same common Pal. The current leveling guide’s central rule is to capture the first 12 examples of each species. This advances the collection while supplying experience and giving you a pool of Pals to use, breed, assign to work, or store in the Palbox.
Step-by-step capture loop
- Start near your base. Circle the surrounding terrain and identify every species you can reach safely. Do not spend the opening hours farming one spawn type after its first captures have already advanced your collection.
- Carry enough spheres. A failed throw costs time and materials. Restock before a long circuit so that a rare opportunity does not end because you ran out of capture items.
- Weaken only when necessary. Use a controlled amount of damage to improve capture odds, but avoid turning every encounter into a long fight. The goal is a high number of successful captures per minute.
- Record your species progress. Stop targeting a species after its 12th example and redirect your route to an uncompleted species. This prevents wasting encounters that no longer advance the collection objective.
- Activate travel infrastructure. Open nearby watchtowers and fast-travel points during the same trip. They reveal surrounding map areas and reduce the time required to return to your base or reach the next cluster.
- Sort the results. Keep the strongest or most useful captures in your active party, and send extras to the Palbox. A full party of suitable Pals improves survivability without forcing you to stop the collection circuit.
Why capture is better than repetitive early combat
Defeating a common Pal may be quick, but it does not provide the collection progress that a capture provides. Captures also give you candidates for combat and work assignments, so the same action can improve both your level and your available roster. Once a species has reached 12 captures, switch targets; the efficiency gain comes from moving through many species rather than grinding one familiar spawn indefinitely.

Early-game mistakes that slow the route
- Fighting every Pal to exhaustion instead of attempting a capture.
- Ignoring nearby species because they are weaker than your current party.
- Returning to base after every encounter instead of opening fast-travel points along the circuit.
- Keeping every capture in the active party, which can leave no room for the strongest combat choices.
- Spending materials on difficult targets before your sphere supply and survivability support the attempt.
Mid game: make dungeons your repeatable XP route
Dungeons are a strong mid-game bridge because one run can combine ordinary Pal captures, a final Alpha encounter, chest loot, and map discovery. Their layouts and spawns are semi-random, and tiers differ, so the best dungeon is the one you can complete consistently rather than the one with the highest theoretical danger.
Dungeon procedure
- Choose a tier you can clear without repeated deaths. Bring armor, healing items, ammunition, and spheres appropriate to the dungeon rather than entering under-equipped for a higher tier.
- Capture useful ordinary spawns. Continue the species-count rule when a dungeon presents an uncompleted Pal. If a species is already at 12, prioritize speed and survival.
- Open chests while you are already inside. Loot can supply materials for technology unlocks and future capture attempts, adding value to the same travel time.
- Prepare for the final Alpha. Reserve spheres and healing for the last encounter. The dungeon reference reports that capturing this Alpha awards nearly twice the experience of capturing a non-dungeon variant.
- Finish and record the result. Note the run’s completion time, consumables used, deaths, and useful loot. Repeat only if the route remains efficient for your current equipment.
When to capture the Alpha instead of defeating it
Capture the final Alpha when your spheres, party strength, and survivability make the attempt reliable. The reported experience advantage applies to capturing the dungeon Alpha, not simply defeating it. If repeated failed throws, deaths, or expensive recovery erase the time saved, drop to a more manageable dungeon tier until your equipment improves.
What to compare between dungeons
- XP per minute: Include the entrance trip, preparation, healing, and return journey—not only time spent in combat.
- Travel distance: A slightly less rewarding dungeon near a fast-travel point can outperform a distant one.
- Failure risk: A death interrupts the run and may require replacing ammunition, spheres, or equipment.
- Consumable cost: Count healing items, ammunition, repair materials, and spheres used on failed attempts.
- Secondary progress: Value chests, map discovery, technology materials, and uncompleted species captures.
Exploration and enemy bases now contribute to leveling
Version 1.0 explicitly added exploration experience for clearing some dungeons and enemy bases. This does not mean every structure awards the same amount, so treat the mechanic as an additional reason to clear content that already fits your route, not as proof that any random detour is optimal.
Build exploration into travel
- Open a watchtower when one is safely accessible. Watchtowers reveal the surrounding map and serve as fast-travel points.
- Link activities geographically. On a trip to a dungeon, clear a nearby enemy base or activate a travel point instead of making a separate journey later.
- Return through the network. Once a fast-travel point is active, use it to shorten future dungeon, resource, and boss routes.
- Do not force a dangerous detour. Exploration XP is not worth a failed run if the enemy base is beyond your party’s reliable combat range.
Exploration is most efficient when it replaces empty travel. A route that captures Pals, unlocks a travel point, clears a qualifying base, and finishes a dungeon can outperform an isolated XP grind even when no single step has the highest reward.
Late game: Oil Rig raids and legendary Pals
The late-game route in the current fan guide moves toward Oil Rig raids and legendary-Pal captures, with Jetragon and Frostallion cited as examples. These are progression goals for a prepared character, not guaranteed top-ranked XP farms: the guide does not publish a reproducible XP table that proves one late-game activity always wins.

Prepare before attempting high-level content
- Armor: Use equipment that lets you survive mistakes rather than relying on perfect dodges.
- Weapons and ammunition: Bring enough to finish the encounter and recover from missed shots.
- Spheres: A legendary capture attempt can consume a large portion of your supply if the first throws fail.
- Party composition: Use a balanced party with damage, durability, and the ability to exploit the encounter’s weaknesses.
- Recovery plan: Know how you will heal, repair, and replace supplies after a failed run.
Measure late-game content by completed runs, not by the reward shown for a successful attempt. If an Oil Rig raid or legendary hunt fails often, a repeatable dungeon Alpha loop may produce more XP per minute while you continue upgrading gear.
Changing the EXP Rate setting
The World Settings reference lists an EXP Rate slider from 0.1 to 20. Higher values increase experience gain. This is the direct shortcut for a solo world or a server you administer, but it changes every comparison, so record the selected multiplier when evaluating a route.
Use the setting deliberately
- For normal progression: Leave the setting at the value your group considers fair, then compare routes under that constant.
- For a faster private world: Raise the slider before starting a new leveling session and tell every player the multiplier.
- For testing routes: Keep the value unchanged between trials; changing it invalidates XP-per-minute comparisons.
- For hosted servers: Confirm that you have administrative permission. Players on a server they do not control may not be able to edit the setting.
A high multiplier does not fix inefficient travel, repeated deaths, or poor sphere management. It simply scales experience received, while the time and material costs of your route still matter.
Activity comparison
| Activity | Best stage | XP profile | Travel and risk | Extra progress |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Capturing the first 12 of each species | Early game | Reliable collection-driven gains; exact XP per capture is not established | Low to moderate risk; efficient when species are nearby | Completes collection goals and expands your usable roster |
| Dungeon ordinary captures | Mid game | Combines several captures with completion rewards; exact totals vary by dungeon | Moderate travel and risk; semi-random layouts | Chest loot, discovery, and technology materials |
| Dungeon final Alpha capture | Mid to late game | Nearly twice the experience of capturing a non-dungeon variant, according to the dungeon reference | Higher risk concentrated at the final encounter | Alpha Pal plus dungeon loot and completion |
| Exploration and enemy-base clears | All stages when safely accessible | Exploration experience is awarded for clearing some dungeons and enemy bases | Travel can be low if integrated into another route; danger depends on the base | Map coverage, fast travel, and base-clear progress |
| Oil Rig raids | Late game | Recommended late-game content, but no reproducible XP ranking is published | High danger and potentially high recovery cost | Raid loot and endgame progression |
| Legendary-Pal captures | Late game | Recommended as endgame leveling content; exact XP totals are not established | High danger and sphere cost | Powerful captures, including examples such as Jetragon and Frostallion |
How to optimize XP per minute without a published benchmark
Because there is no version-locked action table or standard time-to-level test, use your own world as the measuring instrument. A simple log is more useful than copying an unverified claim that one activity is universally fastest.

Transition phase
When ordinary captures become less rewarding relative to the time and your gear can support them, add dungeons. Select a tier you can clear repeatedly, capture the final Alpha when your sphere supply supports it, and use the same trip for chests and travel discovery.
Established phase
Link dungeons, enemy bases, and watchtowers geographically. Clear qualifying bases when they are on the route, and use the fast-travel network to avoid crossing the map on foot for every attempt.

Common problems and fixes
“I am leveling slowly despite constant combat.”
Switch from repeated kills to the first-12 capture rule. If a species is already complete, move to another nearby species instead of farming the same spawn.
“Dungeon runs consume more resources than they return.”
Lower the dungeon tier, shorten the route with a fast-travel point, and reserve spheres and healing for the final Alpha. A repeatable lower-risk run is preferable to a high-tier run that ends in death.

“The late-game raid gives great rewards, but my level barely moves.”
There is no published XP table proving a fixed raid ranking. Track the full run time and failed attempts, then compare it with your dungeon Alpha loop under the same EXP Rate setting.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors“My guide stops at level 65.”
That information is outdated for version 1.0. The current player cap is 80, so continue using late-game content and collection objectives after reaching the former ceiling.
“I cannot change the EXP Rate.”
The 0.1–20 slider applies to a world or server whose settings you can edit. Ask the administrator to change it or continue with the server’s current multiplier.
Bottom-line route
Capture 12 of each nearby species first. Once your equipment supports it, run dungeons and capture their final Alpha for the strongest documented capture advantage. Fold watchtowers, fast-travel points, qualifying enemy-base clears, and dungeon completion into the same travel loops. In the late game, attempt Oil Rig raids and legendary Pals only when you can complete them consistently; otherwise, keep farming the dungeon route that delivers dependable XP with manageable costs.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does defeating a Pal give more XP than capturing it?
The current leveling guidance favors capturing the first 12 examples of each species because captures advance collection progress as well as experience. It does not provide a version-locked table proving that defeating a Pal always gives less XP.
What is the highest EXP Rate available?
The referenced World Settings data lists a range from 0.1 to 20, with higher values increasing experience gain. The setting is available only where you have permission to edit the world or server.
Are Oil Rig raids definitely the fastest late-game XP farm?
No fixed ranking is established. Oil Rig raids are recommended late-game content, but compare their complete, successful XP per minute—including travel, failed attempts, healing, ammunition, and recovery—with a repeatable dungeon Alpha route.
Why do older Palworld leveling guides end before level 80?
Version 1.0 raised the player level cap from 65 to 80. Guides written before the July 9, 2026 release therefore describe an earlier progression ceiling.
