Paladin is software infrastructure for adding configurable privacy and private workflows to EVM-based digital-asset systems. It is not a token or a blockchain: its components let project teams choose among private EVM execution, zero-knowledge token proofs, and notary-based validation while using an EVM ledger for ordering and finality.
What Paladin is—and what it is not
Paladin describes itself as a modular runtime and framework for programmable privacy on EVM. It is an open-source project under Linux Foundation Decentralized Trust (LFDT) governance, licensed under Apache 2.0, according to its project materials. The framework is intended to help enterprises coordinate sensitive digital-asset transactions without requiring every participant to see all transaction details.

That does not make Paladin a separate blockchain, a privacy coin, or a guarantee that every transaction is confidential. It is infrastructure that application teams configure around particular workflows, participants, and disclosure requirements. The resulting privacy properties depend on the selected component and deployment configuration.
How the privacy model fits an EVM ledger
Paladin’s architecture aims to keep an underlying EVM chain as the shared place for transaction ordering and finality while moving selected execution and data sharing into privacy-aware workflows. The LFDT proposal says the underlying EVM smart contracts remain the source of truth for finalization and verification, and that the base chain need not be modified. Those are project architecture claims, not a guarantee for every chain, configuration, or operational setup.

The project materials describe two broad patterns. Token contracts can represent value or data whose ownership is proved across transactions. Privacy groups allow a defined set of parties to execute private EVM logic while making a result provable on-chain. Secure channels are described for selective disclosure of private data; the proposal also describes a sidecar runtime alongside a Besu node, a transaction manager, enterprise key-management integration, and tools for development, configuration, and deployment.
In practical terms, a shared ledger can provide common ordering and a finality reference, while the business data and execution details visible to participants can differ. A deployment must decide which parties hold private data, who validates an action, and what state or proof is exposed on the shared ledger. “Programmable privacy” therefore describes configurable mechanisms—not universal secrecy from all participants or operators.
Choosing among Pente, Zeto, and Noto
Paladin’s reference implementations address different privacy and validation needs. The mechanism is a more useful basis for choosing than calling any one option simply “private.”

| Component | Primary mechanism | Best fit by workflow | Validation and disclosure considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pente | Private EVM execution in privacy groups, using the Besu EVM implementation for private groups, according to LFDT. | Private business logic involving a defined group of parties; useful when the transaction requires contract execution rather than only a token transfer. | Group participants execute the private workflow; the design aims to make a result provable on-chain. The specific data and state disclosed depend on configuration. LFDT says the execution component does not require deploying a full Besu client as part of that component. |
| Zeto | Zero-knowledge proof token implementations. | Token transfers where proof-based validation of ownership or transaction conditions is the core need. | Proofs can support verification without exposing all underlying transaction information, but the exact visible state and disclosure rules depend on the implementation and deployment. |
| Noto | Notary-based validation, using issuer co-signatures and notary logic as described by the project. | Token workflows that rely on an issuer or designated notary to validate or co-sign actions. | Validation depends on the configured issuer/notary role; this is a different trust and operational model from a zero-knowledge proof or private EVM group. |
These components are not interchangeable labels for the same privacy feature. A project centered on a token movement may evaluate Zeto or Noto; a workflow that needs private contract logic among participants may point toward Pente. Some applications may need to coordinate a token transfer with private business logic, so the relevant question is whether the chosen design covers the whole transaction path, not just one on-chain step.
What tokenization workflows Paladin is intended to support
LFDT describes Paladin in connection with tokenized cash and other financial assets, payments, payment-versus-payment (PvP), and delivery-versus-payment (DvP). These are examples of intended institutional workflows, not proof that a particular deployment is in production.
Tokenized cash, bonds, and other assets
Tokenized assets can require participants to verify that a transfer is valid without broadcasting all commercial details to every ledger participant. Paladin’s different mechanisms offer ways to structure that tradeoff: proof-based token transactions, notary validation, or private execution among a designated group. The right fit depends on the asset’s rules, the parties that must validate them, and the information each party is permitted to receive.

Payments and atomic settlement
For DvP, a delivery of an asset and its payment need to be coordinated so that one does not complete without the other. For PvP, the same concern applies to exchanging payments in different forms or domains. Paladin’s project proposal describes coordinating atomic cross-domain actions. That is an architectural capability claim; actual atomicity depends on the application design, supported chain configuration, and operational assumptions.
LFDT’s February 2025 lab announcement named Project Guardian Wholesale Network as an initiative using Paladin for programmable testnet transactions among financial institutions. A testnet initiative is evidence of experimentation, not evidence of a production deployment. LFDT’s broader statements about institutional projects and adoption should likewise be attributed to LFDT unless independently verified for a named deployment.
Integration questions to settle before selecting a pattern
Paladin’s EVM orientation may help teams whose applications and assets already use EVM-compatible contracts, but EVM compatibility alone does not settle deployment readiness. The project proposal describes a sidecar arrangement and targets public or permissioned EVM chains without changing the base chain; teams should confirm which current network configurations and component versions are supported.

Project status and maturity
The word “lab” in older session framing is no longer the project’s current governance label in the sources available here. LFDT announced in November 2025 that Paladin had moved from lab to full project. Its 2026 annual review describes Paladin as an incubating project following migration from lab in the fourth quarter of 2025.
That annual review reports three releases—0.14 through 0.16—164 merged pull requests, monthly contributor calls, and work toward a v1 release during 2026, including distributed sequencing and a new Noto domain. These are figures and plans reported by LFDT in that annual review; they do not establish that v1 has since shipped or that the project has independent production validation. Release status can change, so teams should check the project’s current release information before basing a deployment on a particular version.
What the evidence does—and does not—show
LFDT and Paladin materials explain the architecture, reference components, and institutional use cases. They are useful for understanding project intent, but adoption and maturity claims from those sources are not independent confirmation of security, scalability, or production readiness. The materials surfaced for this article do not include an independent audit report or performance benchmark, and no named institutional deployment is independently established here as a production system.

Paladin documentation also makes a claim that EVM powers “over 80% of global blockchain projects,” but the page does not identify an underlying study, publisher, measurement date, or methodology. That figure should not be treated as a verified market statistic.
Getting started as a developer
Official Paladin materials point developers to documentation, tutorials, a getting-started guide, and community workshops. The repository describes running a three-node Paladin network with Besu on a laptop and lists software prerequisites including JDK 17 or later, Protoc, Docker, Node.js, and Go. Those are development-environment prerequisites, not a complete production deployment specification.
For an initial evaluation, build a small workflow around one privacy pattern and explicitly test what each participant can see, what is recorded on the shared ledger, how validation works, and what happens when a party or service is unavailable. Before moving beyond a development network, compare the tested configuration with the project’s current release documentation and your organization’s security and operational requirements.
