A page description language (PDL) is a language for describing the layout and contents of a page, so that a printer or other output device can render it. Software writes the description. A compatible device interprets it and produces the finished page. PostScript and Printer Control Language (PCL) are the standard examples, and PDF can also act as a PDL in supported print workflows.
The formal definition
Microsoft’s Windows printing protocol glossary defines a PDL as “The language for describing the layout and contents of a printed page.” It names PostScript and Printer Control Language as examples. It also says a printer driver processes application data into a PDL that the printer can interpret (Microsoft Learn glossary).

Adobe’s PostScript Language Reference (third edition, section 2.3) gives a shorter version: “A page description language is a language for expressing an imaging model.” (Adobe PostScript Language Reference)
How a PDL works
Adobe’s reference describes the general model. An application generates a device-independent description of the page. Software controlling a particular raster output device then interprets that description and renders it. In a typical printing pipeline:

- An application produces the page content.
- A printer driver, or the application itself, supplies that content as a PDL description.
- An interpreter in the printer, or in software controlling it, reads the description.
- The interpreter converts it into the device’s raster form, meaning the dots or pixels actually printed.
The exact pipeline varies by operating system and device. The driver may translate application output into a language the printer supports. The printer’s interpreter may also emulate a language it does not natively use. Printer management data can report which language family and level a device supports.
PDL versus a bitmap
A bitmap directly stores pixels. A PDL instead expresses higher-level elements such as text, geometric shapes and sampled images. The interpreter turns those into pixels for the specific device. Adobe’s reference notes that a page description can be more compact and more device-independent than a full-page pixel array, although capabilities differ between formats. The final raster is the interpreter’s output. The PDL is the input that guides it.

Common examples
PostScript
PostScript was developed by Adobe. It is both a PDL and a programming language. The Library of Congress describes its use in electronic and desktop publishing, as a final-state format sent to printers, and as an interchange or vector-illustration format.
Recommended Free Tools
PCL
Printer Control Language was developed by Hewlett-Packard, and Microsoft classes it as a PDL. It has versions and levels, and support varies by printer.
Rank #3
- FAST PRINT SPEEDS: Print up to 19 pages per minute.
- COMPACT DESIGN: Space-saving, compact design fits anywhere in your home, school or small office.
- WIRELESS CONNECTIVITY: Print from almost anywhere in your workspace using your compatible mobile device.
- PAPER CAPACITY: Up to 150 sheets.
- SUSTAINABILITY: Uses less than 2 watts in Energy Saver mode.
PDF is a document format that can also serve as a PDL when the printer and workflow support it. A Kyocera driver guide lists PDF alongside PCL XL, PCL 5e and KPDL, its PostScript emulation, as PDL choices for the device it documents. That list is one example and does not apply to all printers (Kyocera driver guide).
PDL versus PostScript files and PDF today
Adobe says PDF has largely replaced saved PostScript files for general document exchange. PostScript remains useful when a print provider or prepress workflow asks for it, so it persists in specialized and legacy setups.

What “PDL” means on a printer spec or driver screen
PDL is an umbrella term. It is not one file type, and it does not guarantee compatibility. When a printer lists its supported PDLs, the language and the level both matter. Check these points:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- The exact printer model and the driver available for it.
- The language family and supported version or level, such as PCL 5e versus PCL XL.
- Operating system and application compatibility.
- Document complexity, including graphics and fonts.
- Whether you need prepress-style output or ordinary office printing.
- Any measured speed, memory or quality needs for your device and workload.
No PDL is universally best. Kyocera’s guide describes PCL XL as smaller and faster in its context but with backward-compatibility limits. It describes PostScript emulation as useful for applications that support PostScript 2 or 3, with different memory and speed characteristics. Those statements apply to that guide’s drivers, not to every printer.

Common confusions
- A PDL is not the driver. The driver generates or transports the description, and the printer interprets it.
- A PDL is not the final raster image. The raster is what the interpreter produces.
- A PDL is not a single format. PostScript, PCL and PDF differ in design and support.
