If your live stream is stuttering, first find out whether the problem is on the broadcaster’s connection or a viewer’s playback path. In OBS, dropped frames point to an unstable connection to the ingest server or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain; viewer buffering can happen even when the broadcaster reports no dropped frames. Diagnose those symptoms separately before changing settings or buying hardware.
Is it packet loss, dropped frames, or viewer buffering?
Packet loss is one possible network problem, but an OBS dropped-frame counter is not a packet-level measurement and does not prove that packets are being lost. OBS describes dropped frames as a sign that the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. Too many dropped frames can disconnect the broadcaster. Viewer buffering is a different symptom. It may affect viewers because of their location, internet connection, or device even when the broadcast itself is stable. Twitch likewise notes that playback trouble may be on the viewer’s side or related to a particular broadcaster’s configuration. Start with these questions:

- Are all viewers affected, or only one viewer, device, or location?
- Do other live streams and websites work for the affected viewer?
- Does the problem happen on one platform or ingest server, or across several?
There is no universal packet-loss percentage threshold for acceptable live streaming established by the cited platform guidance. A speed-test result alone also cannot establish that the route to a particular ingest server is stable.

Fix broadcaster-side dropped frames
1. Test the ingest route before changing everything else
Try another ingest server offered by your streaming platform. For Twitch on Windows, OBS points to TwitchTest as a way to compare server quality scores. You can also briefly test another streaming service: if the symptom changes, that helps distinguish a service-specific route or configuration issue, but it does not repair the original route. Make one change at a time and note whether dropped frames improve.
2. Match bitrate to stable upload capacity
OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guidance, dated September 30, 2024, suggests starting at about 75% of total upload speed. Treat that as a starting point, not a universal threshold: use stable upload capacity, as well as the platform’s limits, to choose a bitrate. A high speed-test result taken once does not guarantee stable capacity throughout a stream.
Reduce the outgoing bitrate and observe the dropped-frame counter. If the connection stabilizes, the previous setting may have exceeded what the route could sustain. The tradeoff is lower picture quality. If needed, reduce resolution or frame rate too; those changes can improve compatibility and reliability but reduce image detail or motion smoothness.

3. Check the local network and computer
Work through local causes before replacing equipment. OBS lists Wi-Fi instability, modem or router connectivity, network drivers, firewall or antivirus interference, VPNs, and bundled network-prioritization utilities as possible contributors.
- Use Ethernet as a test. A wired connection avoids Wi-Fi instability. Check that the cable and its connections are sound; replace a cable only if inspection or testing points to it.
- Restart the modem and router. Check whether other devices also lose connectivity or experience interruptions.
- Test VPN and network utilities. Try streaming without a VPN or network-prioritization software. If suspected security software is involved, temporarily test with it disabled only if safe to do so, then restore protection and configure an OBS exception if the test confirms interference.
- Update network drivers. Get the appropriate driver from your computer or motherboard maker.
- Isolate hardware before replacing it. If you are unsure whether the modem, router, adapter, or cable is faulty, ask your ISP before buying replacements.
A new Ethernet cable cannot fix ISP congestion, a route problem beyond your home, server-side trouble, or a viewer’s Wi-Fi issue.
4. Check OBS network settings carefully
OBS documents network optimizations and TCP pacing on Windows, along with dynamic bitrate adjustment as a beta option in its troubleshooting guidance. Dynamic bitrate can lower the bitrate when the connection cannot keep up, but it does not fix the underlying cause and may reduce quality. OBS controls can change between versions, so check the settings in the version you are using rather than relying on a fixed menu path.

For Bind to IP, OBS recommends leaving the setting at Default. As a troubleshooting test, OBS suggests trying IPv4 Only; if it makes no difference, return to the IPv4 and IPv6 default.
Fix viewer buffering when the broadcaster is stable
If the broadcaster has no dropped frames, start with the affected viewer’s playback path. Twitch recommends refreshing or restarting the player, trying another stream, checking other sites, and testing another network. Its guide associates Error Code 2000 with an internet-network problem and lists an unstable connection, router or modem issues, and browser extensions among possible causes. The code alone does not prove packet loss.
Use viewing-speed guidance in context
Twitch’s published recommendations below are download speeds for viewers, not broadcaster upload targets, universal minimums, or guarantees against buffering. The 1440p60 option is not available everywhere. Twitch’s playback help page was accessed October 3, 2026.

These are Twitch recommendations, not packet-loss thresholds. If viewers on slower connections are affected, lowering bitrate—and, if necessary, resolution or frame rate—may help them. Whether viewers can select a lower-quality rendition depends in part on whether the platform transcodes the stream. Lower settings trade picture quality or motion detail for broader compatibility. OBS discusses this in its Stream Buffering Troubleshooting guide, dated June 9, 2021.
When the fault may be outside your home
If wired networking, a sustainable bitrate, and local software and hardware checks do not resolve broadcaster-side dropped frames, the remaining issue may involve congestion or routing beyond your home. Give your ISP a specific description: when the interruptions occur, which streaming service or ingest server is affected, whether another service behaves differently, and what local tests you have already tried. The ISP may be better placed to assess a route or service problem you cannot control from OBS.

Streaming protocols can use repair techniques, but those techniques have costs. For WebRTC/RTP, IETF RFC 8834 (January 2021) says RTP senders are required to understand generic NACK feedback, though they may ignore some or all of it. Retransmission uses additional forward bandwidth and can potentially increase packet loss when congestion caused the original loss. Forward error correction (FEC) can protect against some packet loss, but adds steady bandwidth overhead.

These are transport-design considerations, not settings that a Twitch or YouTube broadcaster can generally turn on through an ordinary player control. For wider context, RFC 2354 (June 1998) discusses repair options for streaming media, while RFC 9317 (2022) describes operational issues including network delay variation, bufferbloat, Wi-Fi error correction, and packet reordering. Neither establishes a universally best protocol or creator bitrate.
