If this is meant to be an update, install a compatible update with the same app identity, signing key and an equal or higher version code. If it is a separate app you want beside the existing one, its developer must give it a different application ID. First check whether the message appears on the device or in Google Play Console: those conflicts have different fixes.
Find out where the error appears
- On an Android device during installation: Android may already have an app installed with the same application ID. The installer treats that ID as the app’s identity, so two apps with the same ID cannot coexist. Android’s update guide states that a device can have only one app with a given application ID installed at a time (Android app updates).
- In Google Play Console while creating or publishing an app: this is a package-name registration or ownership issue, not a conflict caused simply by an app on your phone. See the Play Console section below.
The exact installer that produced this wording is not established, so the message alone does not identify which case applies.

Fix the conflict on an Android device
If you are installing an update
Use the legitimate update from the app’s official source. For Android to accept it as an update, the new app must have the same application ID as the installed app, a matching signing certificate (or valid proof of signing-key rotation), and a version code at least as high as the installed version. A matching package name alone does not guarantee that an APK can update the existing app (Android app updates).
If an APK fails these checks, do not try to force it over the installed app. Confirm that it is the correct release and source. A different signing key or a lower version code can block an update even when the application ID is right.

If you want to install a separate app or variant
Android sees two packages with the same application ID as the same app, even if they have different names or icons. A second app intended to run alongside the first—such as a test or debug build—needs a distinct application ID. If you are an end user, ask the app’s developer for a separate build rather than installing an APK from an untrusted source to bypass the collision.
Uninstall only as a last resort
Removing the installed app may allow an otherwise incompatible package to install, but uninstalling erases that app’s data from the device. Before doing so, make sure you recognize the app, know how to restore or sync its data, and have made any needed backup. Uninstalling does not resolve a Play Console package-ownership conflict.

For developers: set the right app identity
Choose the application ID in the app module
In an Android Gradle project, the module-level applicationId determines the app’s installed identity and its identity in Google Play. Each app needs a unique application ID (Configure the app module).

The namespace controls the package for generated classes such as R and BuildConfig; the application ID is the final identity used on-device. Android permits them to differ, although keeping them aligned is a straightforward default (Configure the app module).

Give side-by-side builds distinct IDs
For a debug, test, clone or white-label build that should coexist with production, configure a distinct application ID for that build. This preserves the production app’s identity while allowing Android to install both. The one-app-per-ID rule is enforced by the platform (Android app updates).
Do not change a published app’s ID to repair an update
Keep the existing application ID when publishing an update. Changing it creates a different app in Google Play; existing users will not receive that app as an update, and data does not transfer between the old and new identities (Configure the app module; Android app updates). For a normal update, preserve the ID and satisfy the signing and version-code requirements.

If the conflict is in Google Play Console
Google’s developer-verification guide describes a Play Console “Create app” flow that registers new package names after the guide’s March 2026 launch. According to that guide, a package name previously used outside Play, or installed on a certified Android device before the Play app is created, may require proof of ownership of the private key used to sign the app. Follow the ownership process shown in the current console. Deleting an app from a phone cannot prove control of that signing key (Android developer verification guide).
This registration workflow is time-sensitive; consult Google’s current guide and console instructions for the requirements that apply when you register.

Quick diagnosis
- Device installer, same app: install an official update that matches the installed app’s ID and signing identity and has an equal or higher version code.
- Device installer, separate app: the second build needs a different application ID.
- Device installer, considering uninstall: back up or sync data first; uninstalling erases local app data.
- Play Console: follow the package-name registration or ownership flow in the console rather than removing an app from your device.
