Ozone Skyblock Reborn (OSR) is an expert skyblock questing modpack for Minecraft Java Edition 1.20.1 running on Forge. Install the original OSR profile through the CurseForge app, use Java 17 for a self-hosted server, start with 4 GB of allocated memory (6 GB when available), and keep the client and server-pack versions identical. The separate sequel, Ozone Skyblock Reborn 2, targets Minecraft 1.21.1 on NeoForge and must not be mixed with the original pack.
Godlike.Host offers modded Minecraft server hosting with one-click modpacks, a built-in mod installer and up to three free backups a day.
What Ozone Skyblock Reborn is
Ozone Skyblock Reborn is an expert-focused skyblock pack built around quests rather than a short survival challenge. You begin with limited resources on a small island and work through a guided progression that combines technology, magic, exploration and automation. The quest book supplies objectives and rewards while the pack’s recipe and progression changes make later stages substantially more demanding than a conventional kitchen-sink modpack.

Choose the correct OSR version before installing
Most installation problems come from selecting the wrong project line. The original pack and its sequel are separate releases with different Minecraft versions, mod loaders and files.

|---|---|---|---|
| Ozone Skyblock Reborn (original) | 1.20.1 | Forge | You want the pack covered by this guide or an existing 1.20.1 world. |

Ozone Skyblock Reborn 2 is not an update you can apply to an original OSR installation. Its official page lists version 1.8, released September 25, 2026. Do not copy OSR2 mods, configs or server files into a 1.20.1 Forge instance, and do not attempt to join an OSR2 server with the original client.
Requirements and decisions to make first
- Game: Minecraft Java Edition, not Bedrock Edition.
- Client platform: The CurseForge app is the documented installation route.
- Version: Select the original OSR project for Minecraft 1.20.1 with Forge.
- Self-hosted server runtime: Java 17.
- Memory: The supplied server package uses 4 GB by default and recommends moving to 6 GB if the host machine can handle it.
- Multiplayer choices: Decide whether players will share a quest-reward pool and whether each player or group needs a separate island.
- Backups: Have a copy of the world and server files before every pack update.
Normal mode is the default. Expert mode changes progression for the save or server, so choose it before players invest significant time in a world.

Install the client with CurseForge
The official CurseForge workflow installs the mod files, Forge profile and pack configuration together. Avoid manually adding individual mods unless the pack’s maintainers specifically instruct you to do so; a single mismatched dependency can prevent the profile from loading or make a multiplayer client incompatible with the server.
- Install Minecraft Java Edition and sign in with the account that owns it.
- Install and open the CurseForge app.
- Open the Browse area and select Modpacks.
- Search for Ozone Skyblock Reborn. Confirm that the listing is the original project for Minecraft 1.20.1 and Forge, not Ozone Skyblock Reborn 2.
- Choose the desired OSR release and click Install.
- After installation completes, open the profile’s settings if you need to change its memory allocation. Leave enough RAM for Windows or macOS and other background applications.
- Click Play from the installed profile. The launcher should start the matching 1.20.1 Forge environment.
On the first launch, allow extra time for asset and library extraction. A successful start should show a Forge-based 1.20.1 client with the OSR mods and configuration loaded. If the launcher reports a missing mod or a different Minecraft version, stop and verify the profile rather than adding random files from another release.
Set up a self-hosted OSR server
Self-hosting gives you control over the machine, files and update schedule, but you are responsible for Java, memory, backups, networking and troubleshooting. The supported process uses the server pack that matches the client release.

1. Download the matching server pack
Obtain the OSR server pack for the same Minecraft 1.20.1/Forge release installed on every client. A server pack from another OSR version can contain different mods, scripts or configuration values. Keep the downloaded archive so you can identify exactly which release is running.
2. Install Java 17
The documented server runtime is Java 17. Check the machine’s Java installation before starting the pack and make sure the launch script resolves to Java 17 rather than an older Java release or a newer runtime that the pack has not documented. If multiple Java versions are installed, set the operating system’s path or the script’s Java executable explicitly.
3. Extract the files and read the instructions
- Create a dedicated folder for the server, such as
OSR-Server. - Extract the complete server-pack archive into that folder; do not run the script from inside the compressed file.
- Open the included
instructions.txtand follow any release-specific notes before the first launch. - Keep the world, configuration, mods and scripts together in this folder so backups capture the complete installation.
4. Start the server on your operating system
- Windows: Run
run.bat. - macOS or Linux: Run
run.shfrom a terminal. If the shell reports that the script is not executable, grant execute permission and run it again from the server directory.
The first run may create additional files and stop for an end-user-license prompt or initial configuration. Follow the text displayed by the script and the included instructions rather than closing the window immediately.
5. Set memory conservatively
The server package documents 4 GB as its default allocation and recommends changing to 6 GB when the computer has enough physical memory. Treat those figures as Java heap allocation, not the total RAM installed in the machine: the operating system, Java overhead and other services also need memory. If the host has only 4 GB total, allocating the entire amount to Java can cause swapping or crashes; use a machine with headroom instead.
6. Join with a matching client
Launch the exact same OSR client release on each player computer. The Minecraft version, Forge version, mod list and pack configuration must align with the server. A player using OSR2, a different OSR release or a manually modified profile may see a version or registry mismatch and should reinstall the matching profile.

Self-hosting or a managed Minecraft host?
There is no universal best choice; the trade-off is control versus administration. A home server or rented virtual machine lets you manage files directly, while a managed host usually supplies a control panel and support but still requires you to select and maintain the correct modpack release.
| Responsibility | Self-hosting | Managed hosting |
|---|---|---|
| Control over files and launch scripts | Full control over the operating system, scripts, configs and world files. | Control depends on the host’s panel and file access. |
| Java installation | You install and maintain Java 17. | Ask support which Java 17 option and server-pack workflow they provide. |
| RAM planning | You provide the documented 4 GB baseline and increase toward 6 GB when capacity allows. | You select a plan with enough usable memory and verify how the host measures it. |
| Backups | You must schedule and test your own copies of worlds and server files. | Backup tools may be available, but confirm retention and restore procedure rather than assuming backups are included. |
| Maintenance | You apply pack updates, investigate crashes and keep the machine online. | The host handles platform operations; you still install the correct OSR server pack and coordinate updates. |
| Support | Support comes from your own troubleshooting and the pack community. | Contact the provider’s support team about whether they install the OSR server pack and which files they require. |
If you use a third-party host, provide the exact OSR release and ask the host to install the corresponding server pack. Do not let a one-click installer silently substitute OSR2 or another Minecraft version.
Normal mode versus Expert mode
OSR starts in Normal mode. Expert mode changes the progression and applies to the world or server save, so all players on that save experience the same mode. It is not a per-player difficulty toggle.
Set Expert mode with the in-game command
- Start the server or open the world with administrator privileges.
- Open chat or the server console.
- Run
/packmode set Expert. - Restart or reload only if the pack’s prompt requests it, then verify the quest and recipe behavior before inviting other players.
Set the mode in the configuration
Alternatively, change the packmode-common.toml setting before the world loads. Make the edit while the server or client is stopped, save the file, and then start the world. Keep a copy of the original configuration so you can recover from a syntax mistake.
Pack updates reset the mode to Normal according to the official description. After every update, check the mode and repeat the command or configuration change if the world is intended to remain Expert. Do this before players continue progression, because changing expectations after recipes and quests have been completed can create confusion.

Separate islands and shared quest rewards
Multiplayer supports quest-reward sharing, allowing a team to coordinate progression instead of each player claiming an isolated copy of every reward. Decide how your group wants rewards handled before opening the quest book so that duplicate claims or missed rewards do not become a later dispute.
To create separate islands in the original OSR pack, run /gog help and follow the island commands listed there. The help output is the authoritative in-game syntax for the installed release. Use it to create or join the appropriate island rather than guessing command names from another modpack or OSR2.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Separate islands are useful when players want independent resource automation or progression, while a shared island is simpler for a cooperative team working through one quest path. Island commands and reward settings affect the server world, so make a backup before experimenting on an established save.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Updating without breaking the world
Pack updates can change recipes, quests, scripts and configuration. The server-pack documentation specifically calls for backups before updating and for keeping client and server versions aligned.
- Stop the server cleanly and wait until the process confirms that the world is saved.
- Copy the entire server folder, including the world directory, mods, configs, scripts and pack metadata, to a separate backup location.
- Record the current OSR release and the target release.
- Install the new server pack in a separate folder or retain a clearly labeled copy of the old folder.
- Read the new
instructions.txtfor changes, then update the server files. - Update every client to the same OSR release before players reconnect.
- Confirm that the world is still in the intended mode; updates can reset it to Normal.
- Test startup, quest loading, island commands and a representative automation setup before declaring the update complete.
Never overwrite your only working copy. If the new release fails to start or damages progression, stop it, restore the backup and return clients to the previous matching version while you investigate.

Troubleshooting common failures
The launcher installs the wrong pack
Check the profile title, Minecraft version and loader before launching. The original OSR must show 1.20.1 and Forge. Remove the incorrect profile and install the original project again instead of trying to replace NeoForge or 1.21.1 files by hand.
Recommended Free Tools
The server closes immediately
- Confirm that Java 17 is installed and that
run.batorrun.shactually calls it. - Run the script from the extracted server directory so relative paths resolve correctly.
- Read the first error in the console and the newest log rather than relying on the final “server stopped” line.
- Verify that the archive was fully extracted and that the script has permission to execute.
Players receive a mod or registry mismatch
Compare the exact OSR release, Minecraft 1.20.1 version, Forge version and server-pack contents. Reinstall the client profile if it has been manually edited. Do not copy individual mods from OSR2 or another release to make the lists appear similar.
The server lags or runs out of memory
Start from the documented 4 GB allocation and move toward 6 GB only when the machine has sufficient unused RAM. Close competing applications, check whether the operating system is swapping, and reduce the number of simultaneous players or heavy automation systems while diagnosing. More heap cannot compensate for a machine that is already memory-constrained.
Expert recipes are missing
Check the mode on the save after an update. If it reverted to Normal, run /packmode set Expert with the required permission or correct packmode-common.toml while the world is stopped, then restart and verify the quest book.
An island command does not work
Run /gog help on the original OSR server and use the syntax shown by that installation. Ensure you have the permission required to create or manage islands, and test on a backup if the world already contains player bases.
