When a team has limited time, it should keep social media in the mix for discovery while steadily building a permission-based, exportable email audience. Social can help new people find a business; email gives the business a more direct way to keep in touch with people who opted in. Neither channel guarantees that a person will see a message.
What “owned audience” means—and what it doesn’t
“Owned” is a shorthand for having more control over the relationship and its records, not owning the people or controlling every step of delivery. A business can maintain a list of consenting subscribers and move those records between email providers more readily than it can move a social platform’s follower relationships. But email providers, spam filtering, authentication, consent, and applicable law still shape whether and how messages reach recipients. Google, for example, says it cannot guarantee that messages sent by email providers will pass Gmail’s spam filters.

Social followers are accessible through a platform whose distribution rules and features the business does not control. HubSpot describes social platforms as rented channels in its multi-channel content report; that is a useful strategic metaphor, not a legal definition. A post may help someone discover a business, but following an account does not mean every post will appear to that person.
How email and social media differ
| Question | Social media | |
|---|---|---|
| Control and portability | A permission-based subscriber list can be kept in exportable records and moved between providers. The relationship still depends on recipient consent and email services. | Follower relationships and access are mediated by the platform; they are not equivalent to a portable contact list. |
| Discovery | Usually most useful for communicating with people who already subscribed; the sources do not establish a comparable discovery ranking. | Can surface content to potential new audiences, subject to platform distribution. |
| Reaching known contacts | Lets a business send a message to subscribers, but inbox placement and delivery are not assured. | Lets a business publish to followers, but does not assure that every follower sees a post. |
| Work and measurement | Requires permission capture, list care, useful content, and sending operations. The sources do not establish an apples-to-apples workload or measurement advantage. | Requires publishing and account management; reach is affected by platform distribution. The sources do not establish an apples-to-apples workload or measurement advantage. |
There is no evidence here for a universal claim that email always performs better, or that either channel produces a particular revenue lift. The practical choice is not necessarily one or the other: use each for the job it can do, while avoiding dependence on a single platform or delivery route.

Why busy teams should build a routine, not chase a perfect channel
Audience development needs an owner and a repeatable workflow as well as software. In Omeda’s 2024 survey of more than 110 media and audience professionals, 81% said they planned to maintain or increase investment in audience development over the next year, while two-thirds said their organizations lacked a formal top-down audience development plan. These findings describe that surveyed group, not every business.
Social remains a common choice for small businesses. Constant Contact’s 2025 survey of 1,600 early-stage businesses—in operation for five years or less—in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada found that 63% relied on social media as their primary marketing channel. That result describes the survey sample; it does not show that social is the best channel for every company.

Consumer sentiment is another reason not to treat social reach as a permanent foundation. In a July–August 2023 survey of 263 people, Gartner found that 53% believed social media had decayed compared with the prior year or five years earlier. Gartner also forecast that 50% of consumers would significantly limit their social-media interactions by 2025. That was a forecast, not a verified outcome; the survey and prediction should not be read as proof of what consumers did after 2023.

A manageable way to use the channels together
- Choose a practical point to invite sign-ups. Offer a clear, voluntary email subscription on your website or another appropriate touchpoint. Explain what subscribers can expect and obtain permission before sending marketing messages.
- Use social to make useful material discoverable. Publish content that helps people understand your work, then invite interested readers to continue the relationship through your site or email list. Do not assume every follower sees a post.
- Send email only at a cadence the team can sustain. Prioritize communications subscribers will find useful over an arbitrary frequency. A HubSpot multi-channel report describes a reinforcing pattern: social can drive website visits, visitors can become email subscribers, and email campaigns can support engagement on social. That is a strategic model, not a guaranteed result.
- Keep subscriber records exportable. Know where the records are stored and how to move them if the provider changes. Keep access available to the team rather than making the audience relationship depend on one person’s login.
- Assign channel ownership and a fallback. Decide who can publish and send, who maintains access, and what the team will do if an account or provider becomes unavailable. This reduces operational dependence on one social account or individual login.
Email responsibilities to plan for
Direct communication brings setup and compliance work. For messages to Gmail accounts, Google requires all senders to use SPF or DKIM. Senders who send more than 5,000 messages per day to Gmail accounts must also use SPF, DKIM, and DMARC, and provide one-click unsubscribe for marketing and subscribed messages. Check Google’s email sender guidelines for the current requirements and details.

In the United States, the FTC’s CAN-SPAM guidance calls for accurate header information and subject lines, a valid postal address, and a working opt-out mechanism. The figures above come from surveys and industry or vendor publications, not controlled trials showing that building an email list causes better business outcomes. They support a sensible operating approach—diversify channels, preserve permission-based records, and plan who does the work—but do not establish a universal performance ranking, an ideal posting schedule, or guaranteed reach.
