1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFirst identify which connection is failing: your encoder sending video to the Owncast server, or the Owncast server delivering video to viewers. Those are separate network paths, so a VPS bandwidth change will not fix every buffering problem. If you also send a stream to YouTube, YouTube is a separate destination with its own encoder settings and stream-health messages.
Work out where the buffering starts
Ask the broadcaster and viewers these questions before changing settings:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Does the encoder report dropped frames or disconnections, or does its connection to Owncast remain steady while viewers buffer?
- Are all viewers affected, or only some? Do the affected viewers share a region, use mobile connections, or have slower internet?
- Does buffering happen on every output quality, or only when a viewer selects a higher-bitrate option?
Encoder drops or disconnections point toward broadcaster-to-VPS ingest, though server-side ingest or FFmpeg problems can also be involved. Buffering for only some viewers points more toward viewer connections or the VPS-to-viewer path. These clues narrow the search; they do not prove a cause. See Owncast’s broadcasting guidance, slow-network troubleshooting and geographic buffering guidance.

Make sure upload capacity can sustain the configured bitrate
Bitrate is the amount of data the encoder sends to the server. A higher bitrate uses more of the broadcaster’s available upload bandwidth. Check the connection available where the encoder is running—not just the VPS’s advertised port speed—and whether that upload remains stable during the stream. If the configured bitrate exceeds sustainable upload, reduce it and test again.

Check encoder and server health
Owncast identifies an unstable broadcaster network, bitrate above sustainable upload and server-side FFmpeg issues among possible causes of broadcaster disconnections. Review encoder messages and server logs or health information around the time of the interruption. Do not assume a VPS egress change will solve an ingest problem.
Use compatible video settings
For compatibility, Owncast recommends H.264 video, AAC audio and a keyframe interval of two seconds. In OBS, set the keyframe interval in seconds. In FFmpeg, -g is a frame count, so set it to twice the frame rate for a two-second interval—for example, 60 at 30 fps. These are compatibility recommendations, not proof that a codec setting caused a particular disconnection. Owncast’s broadcasting setup documentation explains the encoder setup.

Estimate VPS-to-viewer bandwidth demand
For viewers served directly from the VPS, estimate outbound demand by multiplying the bitrate of each quality being watched by its simultaneous viewers, then account for other streams and server workloads. Compare that estimate with the VPS provider’s actual port, traffic allowance and any shaping limits. A port’s headline speed alone does not establish how much sustained viewer traffic your deployment can deliver.
Owncast’s requirements page offers scale examples, not guarantees: it says a 5000kbps stream requires a stable 5+ Mbps connection for a viewer to watch without buffering, and estimates that a 1 Gbps port—offered by most VPS providers, according to the page—can support roughly 200 viewers at 5000kbps. Actual capacity depends on the provider, other traffic and delivery architecture. See Owncast’s server requirements and capacity examples.

If variants are delivered through compatible S3 storage, the server’s bandwidth needs can differ: Owncast’s example describes uploading one copy of each variant while the storage provider handles viewer-facing delivery. A CDN or object storage may help with broader distribution, but neither is required for every small stream. Owncast discusses these options in its video performance guidance.
Give viewers a lower-bandwidth option
If the stream reaches the server reliably but viewers on slower connections buffer, offer a lower-bitrate, resolution or frame-rate variant if the server has enough CPU headroom. Smaller variants require less viewer download capacity; additional output qualities also require more server resources. Owncast uses adaptive-bitrate playback to switch among available qualities. When appropriate, reduce the incoming source settings to match the reduced outputs, understanding that lower bitrate or resolution can reduce image detail. Details are in Owncast’s slow-network guidance and performance documentation.

Owncast’s video settings page documents an output bitrate selector range of 400–13,000 kbps in 100 kbps steps, a default frame rate of 24 fps, and common examples of 30 or 60 fps. Treat these as the page’s documented settings, not universal behavior across every Owncast version or configuration; check the settings available in your installation. If buffering is concentrated among viewers far from the VPS, the server’s location or network route may contribute. Consider where both the broadcaster and audience are relative to the server. Depending on audience size and setup, options include moving the server, offering lower variants, or using a CDN or compatible object storage to distribute segments. These change the delivery architecture and bring their own configuration and service choices; they are not automatic fixes. Owncast describes the geographic case in its guidance for distant viewers.

Balance latency against playback resilience
A smaller playback buffer can keep viewers closer to live, but leaves less time to absorb slow transfers, network blips and failed requests. If smooth playback matters more than minimal delay, do not treat lowering latency as a free buffering fix. Owncast says a latency setting change made while live does not affect the running stream; test a change on a later broadcast. See its video settings and latency guidance.
Verify one change at a time
- Record the symptom scope: encoder drops or viewer buffering, how many viewers, and whether they share a location or connection type.
- Check encoder upload stability and bitrate, then inspect encoder and server messages for the same period.
- If ingest is steady, estimate direct VPS egress demand at the active output qualities and compare it with provider limits.
- For affected viewers on constrained links, test a lower output variant if CPU permits. For location-specific trouble, assess server placement and distribution options.
- Test encoder changes before a scheduled event using representative video and audio, and monitor stream health during the event. If sending to YouTube as well, consult YouTube’s live encoder settings and resolution guidance; those settings configure the YouTube encoder path, not Owncast.
Change one variable at a time and note whether the same symptom pattern improves. The official guidance cited here does not establish one universal spare-bandwidth percentage, packet-loss ceiling, jitter limit or command set for every VPS provider, so use the measurements and limits for your actual host.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a YouTube channel that should stay live using uploaded videos, StreamNeo is a separate cloud service, not an Owncast configuration or a camera-based broadcast tool. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, then go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so no home computer or connection has to stay on. It supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and includes a first day free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month.
