You can run Owncast in Docker as the server that receives a live broadcast, but Owncast does not itself import or loop a YouTube playlist. To keep a stream continuous, pair Owncast with a separate playout process that sends it an RTMP feed. The Owncast project’s documented 24/7 example uses local video files with ffplayout—not a YouTube playlist source.
How the pieces fit together
Owncast is the receiving server: an encoder or playout process sends it a broadcast over RTMP, and Owncast makes that stream available to viewers. Docker packages Owncast and can preserve its configuration and other data across container restarts. Continuous playback is a separate job. A playout process must supply video without stopping; the cited Owncast example pairs Owncast with ffplayout and local files in a videos directory.
The official setup material does not document a direct YouTube-playlist-to-Owncast pipeline. If YouTube is the source you want to play, you need a separate workflow that can continuously produce an RTMP stream accepted by Owncast. Confirm that it can access the source, handle gaps or interruptions as you need, and that you have the rights to rebroadcast the content. Do not treat Owncast’s local-file example as evidence of YouTube playlist support.
Deploy Owncast with Docker Compose
The Owncast container instructions use the stable owncast/owncast:latest image, expose web access on port 8080 and RTMP ingest on port 1935, persist ./data at /app/data, and set the container to restart unless stopped. Create a Compose file such as the following, following the current Owncast container documentation if its configuration changes:

- Prepare a host. Use a machine or rented server that can run Docker and has enough network capacity for the broadcast and its viewers. Owncast advises matching stream quality to server resources; these example settings are not a guarantee of capacity.
- Save the Compose configuration. Put the file in a project directory. The bind mount keeps Owncast data in that directory’s
datafolder rather than only inside the container. - Start the service. From the directory containing the Compose file, run
docker compose up -d. - Open the web interface. Visit
http://yourserver:8080, replacingyourserverwith the host name or address. Configure access securely before exposing administration publicly.
Keep the host firewall and any cloud firewall consistent with your intended access: the documented web and ingest ports are 8080 and 1935. Do not expose administration with unchanged default credentials.
Change the default credentials before broadcasting
The documented defaults are admin username admin, admin password abc123, and stream key abc123. Change them immediately. The admin password and stream key are separate settings: changing one does not mean the other has changed. Use unique credentials and avoid publishing the stream key in a public configuration file or command history.

Connect an RTMP publisher
Owncast accepts RTMP on TCP port 1935 by default. In the encoder or playout software, enter the server as rtmp://yourserver:1935/live and enter the stream key in its separate key field. If the publisher accepts only one URL, the key can be appended as rtmp://yourserver:1935/live/your-stream-key. Replace the example host and key with your own values; keep the key private.
This RTMP destination is for a publisher sending video to Owncast. YouTube’s HLS instructions describe a different delivery method for sending a stream into YouTube Live: they specify HTTPS POST/PUT, segments of 1–4 seconds, and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. Those HLS requirements do not configure Owncast’s RTMP ingest and do not establish a YouTube playlist source for Owncast.

Provide continuous video with a separate playout process
Use the documented local-file example
The Owncast project’s 24/7 example runs ffplayout alongside Owncast in Docker Compose and plays files placed in a videos directory. This is the documented route to a continuous feed in the example: the playout process supplies the content, while Owncast receives and serves the resulting broadcast. Follow the project’s ffplayout example for its specific Compose configuration and file organization; the setup facts here do not establish a YouTube playlist integration.
If the playlist source must be YouTube
Choose a separate playout workflow that can access the intended source and continuously publish an RTMP feed to Owncast. Before relying on it, verify how it handles playlist changes, unavailable or restricted videos, network interruptions, and restarting playback after a failure. The cited Owncast pages do not prescribe a YouTube playlist extraction command or establish that the ffplayout example can ingest YouTube playlists.

Choose encoding settings for the server you have
Owncast recommends H.264 video and AAC audio for assured compatibility, and a two-second keyframe interval. Its documentation gives the following example broadcast settings. Treat them as starting guidance: suitable quality depends on the host’s processing, network, and available capacity.
| Example | Resolution | Frame rate | Video bitrate | Keyframe interval |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 720p example | 1280×720 | 30 fps | 3000k | 2 seconds |
| 1080p example | 1920×1080 | 60 fps | 5000k | 2 seconds |
Use the resolution and frame rate your source can actually provide, then check that the server and its network can sustain the resulting feed. A higher setting is not automatically better if it causes dropped frames or unstable delivery. The examples are Owncast documentation guidance, not a promise that every Docker host can run them continuously.

Test the stream and diagnose common failures
- The web page will not load: check that the container is running, port
8080is mapped, and host or cloud firewall rules allow the intended web traffic. - The publisher cannot connect: verify the host name, TCP port
1935, RTMP path/live, firewall access, and stream key. Use the separate key field unless the publisher requires the key appended to the URL. - Owncast starts but there is no program video: Owncast is the receiver, not the playout source. Confirm that the encoder or playout process is running and sending an RTMP feed.
- Playback stops when a source video ends: check the playout configuration and source availability. A continuous feed requires the separate playout process to advance or restart content; Owncast’s documented local-file example does not establish behavior for a YouTube playlist.
- The stream is unstable or the host is overloaded: reduce the broadcast settings and retest. Owncast cautions that server, network, and processing capacity vary.
- Changes or data disappear after container replacement: confirm that
./datais mounted to/app/dataand that the host directory is writable. - A publisher or viewer exposes credentials: rotate the affected stream key or admin password and update the services that use it.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube channel playing uploaded videos, StreamNeo is a simpler alternative to operating Owncast plus a separate playout source: upload your video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud keeps the stream running without a computer or home connection staying on; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Each slot streams uploaded content as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams from uploaded videos, not camera broadcasts. Visit StreamNeo or start the free first day.
