The OWC Thunderbolt 5 Dock is a one-cable workstation dock for a desk with displays and mixed peripherals; the OWC Thunderbolt 5 Hub is the simpler choice when you mainly need more Thunderbolt ports. Either can connect to older interfaces, but an older host does not become a Thunderbolt 5 computer, so its connection sets the practical ceiling.
What does the OWC Thunderbolt 5 Dock add?
OWC describes its Thunderbolt 5 Dock as an 11-port workstation connection point: connect it to the computer with one host cable, then attach displays, storage, networking, audio gear, and other peripherals. Its product page lists up to 140W of host power delivery and includes a certified 1.0-meter Thunderbolt 5 USB-C cable. These are vendor specifications, not independent performance-test results. See the OWC Thunderbolt 5 Dock product page.

| Connection | OWC-listed configuration |
|---|---|
| Downstream Thunderbolt | Three Thunderbolt 5 USB-C ports |
| USB-A | Two ports rated to 10Gb/s and one rated to 5Gb/s |
| Networking | 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet |
| Card readers | SD and microSD |
| Audio | Analog audio in/out combo jack |
| Host charging | Up to 140W, as stated by OWC |
The mix is the point: compared with a port-expansion hub, the dock builds in wired networking, card readers, USB-A, and audio. It is suited to a desk where those connections would otherwise require separate adapters.

Will it work with a Thunderbolt 4, USB4, or USB-C computer?
OWC lists compatibility across Thunderbolt 5, Thunderbolt 4, Thunderbolt 3, USB4, and USB-C, but the connection runs at the maximum bandwidth supported by the host interface. OWC’s Thunderbolt 3 compatibility note is limited to Mac; do not assume Thunderbolt 3 support on every PC. Compatibility means the dock can connect, not that an older computer gains Thunderbolt 5 capabilities.

- 20 Ports of Extreme Connectivity - The TS5 Plus includes 3x 80Gb/s Thunderbolt 5 ports, 5x USB-A 10Gb/s ports, 5x USB-C 10Gb/s ports, DisplayPort 2.1, SD 4.0 & microSD 4.0 UHS-II card readers, 10Gb Ethernet, and 3 x audio ports.
- More Power than Ever - The TS5 Plus host charging port provides up to 140W of dedicated power delivery, ideal for laptops such as the 16” M3/M4/M5 Pro & Max series MacBook Pro that charge at 140W. The included 330W power supply allows sustained power delivery at all times from the host charging port as well as all of the remaining ports. The downstream Thunderbolt 5 ports and one of the front USB-C ports can provide up to 36W of dedicated power delivery for accessories.
- Flexible Display Configurations - The TS5 Plus on macOS devices can connect up to Dual 6K 60Hz displays, or even Dual 8K 60Hz displays on Macs that support those resolutions. Up to Triple 6K 60Hz displays are supported on M5 Pro & Max only. Up to Quad 6K 60Hz displays are supported on M5 Max only. Windows users please check your PC’s supported display compatibility.
- 10 Gigabit Ethernet - 10GbE is 10X faster than traditional 1GbE found on the majority of docking stations. Connect to ultra fast 10GbE networks in order to transfer files faster than ever, or connect to 10GbE equipped NAS storage devices. *Ethernet is only supported on Thunderbolt based hosts as well as USB4 hosts that support PCIe.
- Dual USB Controllers - A unique feature of the TS5 Plus is that it includes Dual USB Controllers. This means that the ports on the front of the dock have one 10Gb/s USB controller for all of the attached devices, and the rear ports have a second 10Gb/s controller for the devices on the back ports. This avoids any bottlenecks when multiple high speed USB devices are connected.
OWC gives these maximum interface figures for the dock. They describe the host connection, not guaranteed speed for every attached device or workload:
| Host connection | OWC-stated maximum |
|---|---|
| Thunderbolt 5 | Up to 80Gb/s bidirectional data; up to 120Gb/s for video |
| Thunderbolt 4 or Thunderbolt 3 | Up to 40Gb/s |
| USB4 | Up to 40Gb/s for USB4 hosts; up to 80Gb/s for USB4 V2 hosts |
| USB-C | Up to 10Gb/s |
Actual results also depend on the host, cable, connected device, and workload. The included cable is certified by OWC as a 1.0-meter Thunderbolt 5 USB-C cable; using a different cable or connecting devices with lower capabilities can change what the setup supports.

Should you choose the dock or the hub?
Choose by the connections you need at the desk, not by the Thunderbolt version alone. OWC’s own dock-versus-hub guidance frames a dock as an all-in-one desk connection and a hub as a way to add Thunderbolt ports.

How many displays can an OWC Thunderbolt 5 dock or hub run?
OWC describes the Thunderbolt 5 Dock as supporting up to three displays, including configurations of up to three 8K displays on suitable systems. Its launch material distinguishes three 8K displays from dual 6K displays on Macs. These are maximum configurations, not guarantees for every computer. Display support depends on the host’s capabilities; confirm the computer’s own display limits and the specific resolution and refresh rate before planning a setup. See OWC’s dock launch announcement.
For the Thunderbolt 5 Hub, OWC lists these maximum modes, subject to host capability:
