Preventing exposure is essential; limiting a credential’s permissions, scope, and lifetime helps contain the damage if exposure still occurs.
What the OWASP Top 10 CI/CD list covers
OWASP’s Top 10 CI/CD Security Risks is a dedicated list for continuous integration and continuous delivery systems. It is separate from OWASP’s web-application Top 10, which is an awareness document for web application security and has its own categories, including Software Supply Chain Failures and Software or Data Integrity Failures (OWASP Top 10:2025).

The CI/CD project describes its work as helping defenders identify focus areas for securing a CI/CD ecosystem. Its ten areas are not presented here as a statistical ranking of incident frequency; the project page does not provide prevalence figures for them.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- CICD-SEC-1: Insufficient Flow Control Mechanisms. Weak controls over how code and changes move through a pipeline can make unauthorized or unsafe changes easier to introduce.
- CICD-SEC-2: Inadequate Identity and Access Management. Poorly managed identities or permissions can give users, services, or compromised components access they do not need.
- CICD-SEC-3: Dependency Chain Abuse. An attacker may exploit dependencies or other links in the software supply chain.
- CICD-SEC-4: Poisoned Pipeline Execution (PPE). Malicious changes to pipeline execution can cause builds or deployment workflows to run attacker-controlled actions.
- CICD-SEC-5: Insufficient PBAC (Pipeline-Based Access Controls). Pipeline-specific access restrictions may fail to isolate projects, jobs, or resources adequately.
- CICD-SEC-6: Insufficient Credential Hygiene. Exposed, persistent, or over-privileged secrets can give an attacker useful access beyond the compromised step.
- CICD-SEC-7: Insecure System Configuration. Unsafe configuration of pipeline systems or their underlying infrastructure can create exploitable weaknesses.
- CICD-SEC-8: Ungoverned Usage of 3rd Party Services. Uncontrolled use of external services can introduce security and governance risks.
- CICD-SEC-9: Improper Artifact Integrity Validation. If the integrity of build outputs is not checked, altered artifacts may be trusted or deployed.
- CICD-SEC-10: Insufficient Logging and Visibility. Inadequate records and monitoring can make suspicious pipeline activity harder to detect and investigate.
These areas interact. Credential hygiene is a specific risk category, but credentials are also affected by identity and access management, pipeline-based controls, system configuration, artifact integrity, and monitoring. A secret store alone cannot compensate for an identity or runner that has excessive authority.

What credential hygiene means in a pipeline
CI/CD jobs often need secrets such as API keys or passwords to retrieve dependencies, publish artifacts, or deploy software. OWASP’s CI/CD Security Cheat Sheet warns against hardcoding secrets in source repositories or CI/CD configuration files, and recommends scanning for accidental exposure, preventing commits where possible, and monitoring for deviations.
Storage is only one part of the problem. OWASP recommends encrypting secrets at rest, whether they are held in a filesystem, vault, or similar store. But a secret can still be disclosed or left behind while a job uses it. Review how pipeline steps handle credentials, as well as where build outputs may preserve them.

- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5C NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
- Source and configuration: Check repositories and pipeline definitions for committed credentials.
- Runtime output: Inspect console output and logs for commands or error messages that reveal secrets.
- Runner residue: Check shell command-history files and other files a job may leave on its runner.
- Build outputs: Examine container images and compiled binaries for embedded credentials.
The cheat sheet names HashiCorp Vault, AWS Secrets Manager, Akeyless, and CyberArk as examples of third-party secret-management solutions. Those examples are not a comparative ranking or endorsement; the right fit depends on the organization’s platform and operating requirements.

Why credential hygiene changes the impact of a compromise
Think about two separate security questions: how likely a secret is to be exposed, and what an attacker can do if it is. Scanning, commit prevention, encryption, and careful handling reduce opportunities for disclosure. Temporary credentials and access restrictions reduce the usefulness of a credential that is nevertheless stolen.

Reduce the opportunity for exposure
Keep secrets out of source code and pipeline configuration, and use secret scanning to find accidental commits. Check runtime output and artifacts rather than assuming a protected vault keeps a secret safe after a job retrieves it. Monitor for deviations that could indicate credentials are being handled unexpectedly.
Make exposed credentials less useful
Where feasible, use temporary credentials or one-time passwords rather than long-lived secrets. Restrict where and how a credential can be used, including IP-based restrictions where appropriate. A credential should authorize only the specific action and resource the pipeline step needs.

Apply least privilege beyond the secret itself
Limit authority at three levels: the credentials pipeline steps use to access external resources, each pipeline or step’s access to other CI/CD platform resources, and the permissions of the operating-system user running the pipeline. If a job or runner is compromised, unnecessary permissions can turn a limited foothold into wider access.
Manage identities throughout their lifecycle
Credential cleanup depends on knowing which identities exist and why. OWASP recommends maintaining an inventory that records each identity’s owner, identity provider, last-used and last-updated information, granted permissions, and permissions actually used.

Use that inventory to investigate identities with no clear owner, obsolete credentials, and permissions that exceed actual use. Remove access that is no longer needed, and keep ownership and lifecycle information current as teams, jobs, and systems change.
A practical CI/CD credential checklist
This checklist synthesizes the controls in OWASP’s CI/CD guidance:
- Keep secrets out of source code and CI/CD configuration; scan for accidental exposure and monitor for it.
- Review console output, logs, shell history, container layers, and compiled artifacts for unintended disclosure or persistence.
- Encrypt secrets at rest and use a managed secret store when appropriate.
- Prefer temporary credentials where feasible, and restrict where and how credentials can be used.
- Limit permissions for the credential, the pipeline step, and the runner’s operating-system identity.
- Track identity ownership, use, permissions, and lifecycle so unused or excessive access can be removed.
- Address credential hygiene as part of a broader CI/CD security program that also covers the other nine OWASP risk areas.
How to choose a secrets-management approach
OWASP’s examples do not establish which vendor or deployment model is best for a particular team. When evaluating an approach, use the controls your pipeline needs as the criteria:
- Does it integrate with your CI/CD platform and identity provider?
- Can it issue short-lived credentials for jobs that need them?
- Can policies restrict access at the required level of detail?
- Does it support the audit and logging your team needs?
- Does its operational model fit your team and deployment requirements?
A secret-management product is one component, not a substitute for controlling pipeline permissions, runner access, artifact handling, and monitoring.
