You can’t directly edit an email after it has been delivered in Outlook. In some Microsoft 365 work or school accounts, you can try to recall an unread message and send a replacement; otherwise, send a correction as a new email. Recall is not guaranteed, and Outlook.com personal accounts do not support it.
Can you edit an email after sending it in Outlook?
No. Once a message has reached a recipient, Outlook does not let you change that delivered copy in place. Message Recall is an attempt to remove an unread copy—and, in supported Outlook flows, provide a replacement—not a guaranteed rewrite. Check the recall report to find out what happened.

Microsoft’s guidance, checked on October 7, 2026, limits recall to Microsoft 365 work or school accounts where sender and recipient are in the same organization and the recipient has not opened the message. How to recall a sent email in Outlook
New Outlook for Windows and Outlook on the web
- Open Sent Items and double-click the message so it opens in a separate window.
- Select Recall Message and confirm.
- Check the Message Recall Report for the result: success, pending, or failure.

Classic Outlook for Windows
- Open Sent Items and double-click the message. Selecting it only in the reading pane is not enough for the documented command.
- On the Message ribbon, select Recall This Message. Its location can vary with the ribbon layout.
- Choose whether to delete unread copies or delete unread copies and replace the message, then confirm.
- Review the Message Recall Report to see whether the request succeeded, is pending, or failed.
If the recall command is missing, the account may not be Exchange-based or the organization may not have the feature available. Protected messages are also a limitation. Microsoft Support’s requirements and limitations
Outlook for Mac
Recall is supported in Outlook for Mac version 16.94 (Build 25010522) or later; legacy Outlook for Mac is not supported. Open Sent, open the message, select Recall, and confirm. The same-account and unread-message requirements apply. Microsoft Support: recall in Outlook for Mac

What to do if recall is unavailable or fails
Send a new message with the correction, or use Outlook’s resend option to revise the content, recipients, or attachments before sending again. Resend creates a separate message; it does not alter the original email, and it is different from forwarding it.

- For a small error, send a concise correction that identifies the detail to disregard and provides the correct information.
- If the original had the wrong attachment or recipients, explain what the new message replaces and include the correct material or recipient list.

Recall, resend, and Undo Send compared

How to avoid the same mistake next time
Where available, configure Undo Send to add a short pause before transmission. Microsoft’s Outlook for Mac guidance lists delay choices from 5 seconds up to 120 seconds, with availability depending on supported licenses and accounts.
