Outlook’s “The linked image cannot be displayed” error has more than one cause. First determine whether the missing picture is loaded from a web address or embedded in the message: a URL-based image may be blocked by an Outlook registry setting, while a separate classic Outlook issue after the May 12, 2026 updates affected embedded images and has been fixed in specified builds.
First, identify which kind of image is missing
An image in an email can be loaded from an external URL or included in the message as an embedded image. The error alone does not tell you which case applies, and the remedies are different.

- External URL: The message refers to an image hosted online. Microsoft documents a case in which Outlook’s
BlockHTTPimagesregistry value prevents that image from displaying. Microsoft’s troubleshooting article covers this cause. - Embedded image: The image is included with the message, often referenced in its source using a
cid:value. A known issue in classic Outlook after the May 12, 2026 updates affected this type. Microsoft’s known-issue notice describes the diagnostic and fixed builds.
If the problem affects just one message, note whether other messages and signatures still show images. That helps establish the scope, but does not by itself identify the image source.

Microsoft documents the linked-image error in Outlook when BlockHTTPimages is set to 1 and the image source points to a URL. In the described scenario, Outlook may first show a red X and a notice that automatic picture downloads were prevented; choosing to download pictures can then be followed by the linked-image error. This setting is one specific cause, not a universal fix for missing images.

Check before changing the registry
Only pursue this registry remedy when the failing image is URL-based and the value is present. Microsoft lists these possible locations, where x.0 is the Office version-specific registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftOfficex.0CommonHKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwarepoliciesMicrosoftOfficex.0Common
Microsoft’s documented resolution is to remove the BlockHTTPimages value. Registry changes can cause problems if made incorrectly, so back up the registry and proceed carefully. If the value is under the Policies hive, it may be controlled by Group Policy. In that case, a policy refresh can restore it; ask your administrator to change the policy rather than repeatedly deleting the value.

If embedded images stopped displaying in classic Outlook
Microsoft reported that images in emails, newsletters, and signatures could fail in all supported versions of classic Outlook after the May 12, 2026 updates. The displayed message may say: “The linked image cannot be displayed. The file may have been moved, renamed, or deleted. Verify that the link points to the correct file and location.” This issue is distinct from the URL-image registry case.
Check the message source for an embedded image
- Open the affected message in classic Outlook.
- Select Move > Actions > Other Actions > View Source.
- In the source, look for
cidin thesrcattribute of av:imagedatatag. A value such assrc=cid:image001.png@...indicates a content-ID image.

Microsoft says the original message’s images should display once the applicable fix is installed.
