Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteOutlook logging is one of the quickest ways to collect diagnostic detail when email, sign-in, or sync behaviors don’t match what you expect. When you enable logging, Outlook records troubleshooting data that can help support teams (and internal IT) pinpoint where failures are happening.
This walkthrough covers how to enable and disable logging in the main Outlook experiences you’re likely using in 2024: Outlook for Windows (classic), new Outlook for Windows, Outlook for Mac, and Outlook on the web. You’ll also learn where the logs land, how to confirm they’re being generated, and what to do when the logs don’t show up.

What Outlook Logging Is (and Why You’d Turn It On)
“Logging” in Outlook generally refers to a troubleshooting mode that captures diagnostic traces. Those traces can include network requests, authentication outcomes, add-in interactions, and other client-side events.

Prerequisites Before You Enable Logging
- Know your Outlook version: classic Outlook vs new Outlook changes what’s available.
- Be ready to restart Outlook: many logging options only begin capturing after a restart.
- Reproduce the problem after enabling logging: if you turn on logs and then do nothing, you may only collect a small baseline.
- Have storage space: log files can grow quickly when you’re generating repeated errors.
If you’re on a work or school device, confirm you’re allowed to enable diagnostics. Some organizations restrict logging or collection policies.
Enable/Disable Logging in Outlook for Windows (Classic Outlook)
This is the most direct, user-controlled logging method for many Microsoft 365 and Exchange scenarios on Windows.
Turn on troubleshooting logging
- Open Outlook (classic).
- Go to File > Options.
- Select Advanced.
- Scroll to the Troubleshooting area.
- Check Enable troubleshooting logging.
- Click OK.
- Close and restart Outlook.
After restart, reproduce the issue (for example: send a message, refresh a problematic folder, or sign out/in). Leave it running long enough to capture the failure.
Turn off troubleshooting logging
- Open Outlook > File > Options.
- Go to Advanced.
- Uncheck Enable troubleshooting logging.
- Click OK.
- Restart Outlook (recommended).
Turning off logging prevents new trace data from being captured, but the existing log files remain on disk until you delete them or your system cleans temp files.
Find the log files Outlook generates
Outlook’s troubleshooting logs are typically stored in your user profile, often under a temp/logging path. A common location is:
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Temp\(then a folder starting with OutlookLogging or similar)
Because exact folder naming can vary by Office build, do this practical check:
- Enable logging.
- Restart Outlook.
- Reproduce the problem.
- Afterward, search Windows for files/folders containing
OutlookLogging.
That method reliably confirms the real output location on your system.

Enable/Disable Logging in New Outlook for Windows
New Outlook (the modern client in Windows) doesn’t always expose the same “Enable troubleshooting logging” checkbox you may see in classic Outlook. Instead, it often uses diagnostics through its support/report flows.
Use the built-in diagnostics/reporting flow
Follow this pattern, which is designed to capture the necessary telemetry for support escalation:
- Open new Outlook on Windows.
- Open Settings (gear icon) or the Help menu.
- Choose an option such as Report a problem or Help > Troubleshoot.
- Select the error category that matches your issue (sync, sign-in, send/receive, etc.).
- Include reproduction steps and timestamps.
- Submit the report so the client attaches diagnostics/logging artifacts.
If you see a “collect logs” or “include diagnostics” toggle, turn it on before sending the report. If there’s no toggle, the report flow typically gathers what support needs automatically.

With new Outlook, logs are often attached to the diagnostics payload rather than saved as a clearly named folder on disk. If you need local files, look for a download option after the report is processed, or ask support whether you should provide the attached bundle.
Enable/Disable Logging in Outlook for Mac
Outlook for Mac historically uses different diagnostic controls than the Windows classic client. The available knobs can depend on macOS version, Outlook version, and whether you’re using an Exchange, Microsoft 365, IMAP, or POP account.
What you can enable on macOS
In many Mac troubleshooting scenarios, Outlook focuses on:
- Generating diagnostic information via a Help or Troubleshooting workflow.
- Allowing users to export/collect logs for support.
Check for an option in the menu bar such as Help > Diagnostics or Help > Contact support. If your build includes an explicit “enable logging” toggle, use it, then restart the app.
How to turn logging off
If you have an explicit toggle (for example, a diagnostics/logging option in settings), disable it and restart Outlook. If your only option is “Generate diagnostics” on demand, you usually don’t need to disable anything—because the logs are collected when you request them.

Find and package logs
When diagnostics are generated, Outlook or macOS typically provides a file bundle you can save or upload. If the app doesn’t show an easy download path, you may be prompted to locate a file in a Finder location.
As a fallback, capture both:
- A screenshot of the error state
- The diagnostic bundle file created by Outlook’s diagnostics tool
Logging Options in Outlook on the Web (OWA)
Outlook on the web is browser-based, so “client logging” is often limited. You generally can’t flip the same debug logging switches you get in the desktop clients.
What you can and can’t control from the browser
- You can: capture evidence with browser dev tools, refresh timelines, and detailed error screenshots.
- You can’t reliably: enable a full Outlook desktop-style troubleshooting logging mode.
How to collect diagnostics for support
- Reproduce the issue in OWA.
- Open your browser’s dev tools (commonly F12).
- Use the Console and Network tabs to capture failing requests.
- Export or copy the relevant error details.
- In your support ticket, include mailbox type (Exchange/Exchange Online), tenant info if available, and the time the issue occurred.
If your organization uses Microsoft 365 support workflows, include the request IDs or correlation IDs shown in errors where available—those speed triage dramatically.

Log Level, Duration, and Storage: What to Expect
Outlook troubleshooting logs are meant for short-term diagnostics. They can grow rapidly if your client is repeatedly retrying authentication or sync.
- Enable logging, reproduce the issue, then disable logging when you’ve captured enough evidence.
- Reproduce deliberately: perform 1–3 clear attempts (send an email, refresh a folder, sign out/in) rather than leaving it running unattended for hours.
- Check file size: if logs balloon, stop early and capture the relevant period.
Common Mistakes (and How to Fix Them Fast)
- Enabling logging but forgetting to restart Outlook. Many options take effect only after restart.
- Reproducing the issue before enabling logging. Support needs the failing period captured in the traces.
- Assuming you’ll always find logs in the same folder. Use the search method (Windows search for
OutlookLogging) after you trigger the issue. - Including sensitive data. Logs may contain email addresses and message subjects. Use secure sharing and only send what support requests.
- Collecting too little. If the problem is intermittent, capture during multiple attempts, but don’t run logging all day.
Troubleshooting: Logging Doesn’t Generate Files
If you enabled troubleshooting logging and still don’t see new logs, work through this sequence.
Try a clean restart and reproduce the issue
- Fully close Outlook (not just minimize).
- Open Task Manager, end Outlook processes.
- Start Outlook again.
- Enable/confirm logging is still checked.
- Reproduce the exact failure within 1–5 minutes.
Check permissions and temp/log folders
If your Windows profile has restrictive permissions or the temp directory is redirected, Outlook may fail to write logs.
- Verify you can write to
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Temp. - Confirm enough free disk space exists.
- If you use aggressive cleanup tools, disable them temporarily while capturing logs.
Rule out account/profile and add-in interference
Sometimes logging fails to capture useful traces because the client crashes early or add-ins interfere.
- Start Outlook in safe mode (from Run):
outlook.exe /safe - Enable logging again (or confirm it’s enabled).
- Reproduce the issue.
- If logs appear in safe mode, disable third-party add-ins and test again.
Repair Office if logging is consistently broken
If you never get output and other Office features are also unstable, run an Office repair:

Security and Privacy Considerations
Outlook logs can include identifying information such as email addresses, server endpoints, and timestamps. Treat them like sensitive troubleshooting data.
- Share logs only with authorized support channels or internal IT.
- Remove unrelated attachments and screenshots that contain personal information.
- If you’re uploading to a ticketing system, use whatever encryption and access controls your organization mandates.
Quick Reference Table: Where Logs Usually Go
| Outlook type | Common way to enable logging | Where to look for output |
|---|---|---|
| Outlook for Windows (classic) | File > Options > Advanced > Enable troubleshooting logging | %LOCALAPPDATA%\Temp (search for OutlookLogging) |
| New Outlook for Windows | Report a problem / diagnostics flow | Often attached to the submitted diagnostics bundle (not always a local folder) |
| Outlook for Mac | Help/diagnostics workflow (varies by version) | Diagnostic bundle provided by Outlook and/or stored in an export location |
| Outlook on the web | Browser-based evidence (dev tools) + support ticket details | Browser Network/Console exports; request IDs in error responses |
Bottom Line
If you’re using Outlook on Windows classic, the most reliable method is File > Options > Advanced > Enable troubleshooting logging, then restart and reproduce the issue. Disable it afterward so you don’t keep collecting traces unnecessarily.
On new Outlook, focus on the diagnostics/report a problem workflow. On macOS and the web, use the built-in diagnostics export or browser evidence collection, respectively, and provide support with timestamps and reproduction steps.
FAQs
Will enabling Outlook logging slow down my computer?
It can, especially if the client is repeatedly failing and generating large trace files. Keep logging on for the minimum time needed to reproduce the problem.
Do I need to enable logging for every mailbox/account?
For classic Outlook, enabling troubleshooting logging applies to the client session. You still need to reproduce the issue for the specific account behavior you’re investigating.
How do I know when to stop logging?
Stop once you’ve captured a complete failure cycle (for example, one send attempt that fails and the subsequent retry behavior), plus enough context for the error timestamps.
Can I delete old Outlook log files?
Usually yes for local troubleshooting logs, but only after you’ve saved what support or your IT team needs from that run. If you’re unsure, keep the folder until the ticket is resolved.
