When Outlook drag-and-drop attachments stop working, the failure is usually predictable: the drop target doesn’t accept the file, Outlook’s editor state is stuck, a plugin is intercepting the action, or security/policy settings block the file type.
This guide walks you through quick fixes first, then platform-specific recovery steps for Outlook for Windows, new Outlook, Outlook for Mac, and Outlook on the web—so you can get attachments working again instead of losing time.

Why Outlook Drag and Drop Attachments Fail
Drag-and-drop relies on the app editor recognizing the drop event and accepting the file into the message compose surface. When it fails, it’s often because the compose window isn’t in a “ready to accept attachment” state, a browser/OS extension intercepts the gesture, or Outlook add-ins/security settings block insertion.
Common triggers include Outlook updates, changed security/Trust Center settings, add-ins (especially PDF, eSign, or DLP tools), and blocked file types or oversized files.

Fast Checks That Fix Most Cases (2–5 minutes)
Before you change settings, run these quick checks. They resolve a surprising number of “nothing happens when I drop the file” reports.
- Confirm you’re dragging into the message compose area (the body where you type), not into the subject line, address fields, or outside the compose window.
- Try a single small file (like a
.txtor a small.png) to see if it’s a file-type/size issue. - Close the message you were composing and start a new one. Drag the file again.
- Restart Outlook completely (not just the window). On Windows, end the process from Task Manager and relaunch.
- Test with a different recipient account (if you have access to both a work/school and personal mailbox). Some policies differ by tenant.
If the quick checks don’t help, move to the platform-specific fixes.
Fixes for Outlook on Windows (Classic Outlook)
Classic Outlook on Windows is still the most common environment where drag-and-drop attachment handling breaks due to add-ins, Trust Center settings, or a corrupted local Outlook state.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsRestart Outlook and verify the message composer
Start a new email, then drag a small file into the body. If it fails only in one specific email draft, the draft’s editor state may be stuck.
If you can, create a brand-new message and test there. Don’t drag into an already-open draft thread until you’ve confirmed the behavior in a fresh compose window.
Disable Add-ins that block file insertion
Add-ins can intercept drag-and-drop events or restrict attachments (especially compliance tools, eSign tools, and PDF toolbars). Disable them temporarily to isolate the problem.
- Open Outlook.
- Go to File > Options.
- Select Add-ins.
- At the bottom, next to Manage, choose COM Add-ins and click Go….
- Uncheck all add-ins, click OK, and restart Outlook.
- Create a new email and try drag-and-drop again.
If it works with all COM add-ins disabled, re-enable them one-by-one (or in batches) to identify the exact culprit.

Repair Office/Outlook locally
If add-ins aren’t the issue, the local Outlook components may be damaged. A quick repair can restore drag-and-drop handling.
- Close Outlook.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Microsoft 365 or Office, select it, then choose Modify.
- Choose Quick Repair, then restart the PC if prompted.
- If it still fails, rerun Modify and choose Online Repair.
Online Repair tends to be slower but more thorough.
Check Trust Center and attachment security settings
Security settings and file blocking can make Outlook refuse certain attachment types or actions. While Trust Center doesn’t typically disable drag-and-drop for every file, it can block “unsafe” file types.
- Go to File > Options > Trust Center > Trust Center Settings.
- Check settings related to attachments, downloads, and file handling.
- Make minimal changes and re-test drag-and-drop with a simple file first.
If your mailbox is managed by an organization, IT policies may override local Trust Center changes.

For many users, the add-in isolation test is the fastest path.
Test with a new blank message and safe-mode style isolation
If Outlook is installed with many integrations, isolate by using a minimal scenario:
- Start Outlook.
- Create a blank email in a new window.
- Drag a small
.txtfile into the body. - If that works, try a
.pdfor.docxto narrow down “file type blocked” vs “drag event blocked.”
This helps you avoid chasing the wrong setting.
Fixes for the New Outlook on Windows
New Outlook behaves differently from classic Outlook. It’s still affected by account sign-in state, client data, and extensions—just with different UI and sometimes different drag-and-drop implementation.
Use the current compose window correctly
In new Outlook, drag-and-drop can fail if the focus is on a different UI element. Click inside the message body first, then drag the file into the body area.
Also verify you’re composing in a normal email window (not a special panel view that doesn’t accept file drops).
Sign out and back in (Microsoft account or work/school)
Refreshing the session can fix stuck compose editors.
- Open new Outlook.
- Go to File or Settings (depends on build) and find your account.
- Select Sign out.
- Restart Outlook and sign back in.
- Compose a new message and test drag-and-drop with a small file.
Reset the Outlook client data
If the compose environment is corrupted, reset can help. Follow Microsoft’s supported reset/rebuild approach for new Outlook if you see persistent attachment handling errors.
If your organization manages Outlook, ask IT before running client resets—they sometimes provide a policy-compliant fix.
Temporarily switch to the classic compose flow
When drag-and-drop is broken only in the new UI, using classic compose (or an alternative attach method) can be a practical workaround while you fix the root cause.
At minimum, use the Attach button (outlined below) to keep work moving.

Confirm you’re dropping into the message body area
On macOS, it’s common to accidentally drop onto the subject header or the “To” recipient field area. Click in the body where you type, then drag again.
Test with a small .png or .txt file.
Disable problematic plugins or remove custom rules temporarily
Third-party plugins for signing, PDF handling, or compliance can interfere with file insertion. Temporarily disable them and retry.
If you’ve installed any Outlook/Microsoft add-ons via a managed tool, disable them one by one.

Update macOS and Outlook
Drag-and-drop behavior has changed across macOS releases and Outlook builds. Updating reduces the chance you’re hitting a known bug.
- Check System Settings > General > Software Update.
- Open Outlook and check for updates in Outlook’s Help menu (or Microsoft AutoUpdate if your org uses it).
- Restart the Mac after updates and retry drag-and-drop.
Rebuild the Outlook database (advanced)
If Outlook’s local database is corrupted, drag-and-drop and other editor actions can behave unpredictably. Rebuilding can help, but it’s best done when simpler steps fail.
Rebuild steps vary by Outlook version, so use the official Microsoft procedure for your specific macOS + Outlook build. Before doing anything advanced, ensure you’re aware of how your account is configured (Exchange vs IMAP vs local folders).
Fixes for Outlook on the Web (OWA)
OWA drag-and-drop depends heavily on the browser and extensions. If you can attach with the button but drag-and-drop fails, suspect extensions, cross-site settings, or file blocking.
Try an incognito/private window
Open a private window and test drag-and-drop again. If it works, your regular browser profile or extensions are likely interfering.
Disable browser extensions that interfere with drag-and-drop
Common culprits include ad blockers, script blockers, privacy extensions, and productivity tools that modify DOM events.
- Disable extensions one by one.
- Refresh OWA.
- Test drag-and-drop after each change.
If you find a specific extension that breaks it, keep it disabled for mail / office domains.
Switch browsers and clear site data
Test in a second browser (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Safari). If drag-and-drop works in one browser but not another, the issue is browser-specific.

Check file size and blocked file types
OWA may refuse to attach certain types or files above your organization’s limit. Even if you can attach the file via button, drag-and-drop can fail if the client pre-check rejects it.
Test with a small benign file type first to confirm whether you’re blocked by size/type rules.
Common Causes and How to Confirm Them
If the fixes feel random, use this cause-to-symptom mapping to confirm what’s happening.
IT policies block attachments or drag-drop targets
Some tenants enforce DLP/compliance rules that restrict file attachments for certain recipients or message contexts. If you can’t attach to a specific mailbox but can to another, policies are the leading suspect.
Try sending to a different recipient domain or a different account in the same tenant.
File is too large or the type is blocked
Drag-and-drop may fail silently for disallowed types (for example, some executable formats or macro-enabled Office files). Confirm by testing a tiny .txt and then a common office type like .docx.
Drag-and-drop is blocked by browser/OS security
On managed PCs, endpoint security tools can intercept or block drop events. If other drag-and-drop behaviors also feel broken (moving files between folders, dropping into other apps), it’s less likely to be Outlook-specific.
Outlook add-ins or integrations interfere
COM add-ins in classic Outlook or plugins in Outlook for Mac are frequent causes. If disabling add-ins fixes it, re-enable one at a time until you find the blocker.
Corrupted Outlook profile or message editor state
If drag-and-drop fails only for one account or only in one state (drafts, templates, or recurring messages), the local profile/editor may be stuck. Repair or profile recreation (with IT assistance if needed) is the recovery path.

Use the Attach File button
In Outlook’s compose window, choose Attach File (paperclip icon). Browse to the file and insert it.

If this works but drag-and-drop doesn’t, you’ve narrowed the issue to the drag target handler rather than attachment permissions.

Use Copy/Paste or drag into the attachment picker
Some builds accept a different interaction: click Attach File, then use your file system to drop into the picker area if the UI supports it.
Alternatively, try copy/paste for certain file types or use keyboard-driven selection in the attachment dialog.
Insert as OneDrive/SharePoint link
For large files, link-based sharing can bypass attachment size/type constraints. Use the “insert link” option if your Outlook build includes it.
This is especially helpful when your tenant restricts direct attachments or when files exceed typical limits.
Use a cloud transfer link for large files
If you’re dealing with very large PDFs, videos, or zipped archives, a transfer link (OneDrive/SharePoint) is often the most reliable route. It avoids client-side attachment handling entirely.
Troubleshooting Checklist (If Nothing Works)
When the main steps don’t resolve it, use this checklist to avoid spinning your wheels.
- Try drag-and-drop in a different compose window (new email) and with a tiny
.txtfile. - Try a different browser (OWA) or disable extensions/in-private mode.
- Disable all COM add-ins (classic Outlook) and restart Outlook.
- Run Quick Repair, then Online Repair if needed.
- Check Trust Center for attachment handling and file download/security rules.
- If you suspect tenant policy, test attachments to a different recipient within the same organization.
- For Outlook for Mac, update macOS + Outlook, then rebuild the Outlook database using Microsoft’s supported steps.
- As a last resort, test on another user profile or another machine (if available) to separate local vs account-level issues.
If the problem persists across machines and browsers for one user, contact IT with details: Outlook version, OS version, mailbox type, and the exact file type/size that fails.

Why does Outlook not show any attachment when I drop the file?
Most often, the drop target isn’t the message body, a blocked file type is being rejected, or an add-in/plugin is intercepting the drag-and-drop event. Test with a small .txt first and use the Attach File button to compare behavior.
Can drag-and-drop fail only for certain file types?
Yes. Many tenants restrict executable formats, macro-enabled documents, or other “unsafe” extensions. If .txt works but .docm or .zip doesn’t, you’re likely hitting security/policy restrictions.
Does disabling add-ins fix drag-and-drop permanently?
It fixes it for that session and until you re-enable the problematic add-in. Once identified, you can keep the add-in disabled or update it if the vendor offers a drag-and-drop compatibility fix.
What if Attach File works, but drag-and-drop doesn’t?
That strongly suggests a drag-and-drop handler problem: browser extension interference (OWA), COM add-in interception (classic Outlook), or a stuck compose/editor state. Use the button as your workaround while you apply the fix steps.
Is this an Outlook bug?
Sometimes. Updates to Outlook, Office, macOS, or browsers can change drag-and-drop event handling. If the issue started after a specific update date, mention that in your IT ticket and consider testing by rolling back extensions or waiting for the next Office build.
Bottom Line
When Outlook drag-and-drop attachments not working, you’ll usually fix it by isolating add-ins (classic Outlook), removing browser extension interference (OWA), refreshing session/client state (new Outlook), or updating/rebuilding locally (Outlook for Mac).
If you need to send a file right now, use the Attach File button or share a OneDrive/SharePoint link—then continue troubleshooting for the underlying cause.
