In the seven-layer OSI model, Layer 5 is the Session layer. A “Layer 5 protocol” means a protocol or service associated with managing a communication session—not one single protocol. TCP/IP has no separately defined Session layer, although some session-related functions are handled by TCP and application protocols.
What is Layer 5 in networking?
The OSI model divides network communication into seven conceptual layers. From the top down, they are Application, Presentation, Session, Transport, Network, Data Link and Physical. The Session layer is number five, between Presentation and Transport. RFC 4949 gives this OSI-to-Internet architecture comparison.

Calling something a “Layer 5 protocol” describes its role in that model. It does not name a unique protocol, and not every real-world protocol architecture has a distinct component for each OSI layer.

What does the Session layer do?
It concerns organizing a communication session between cooperating application processes. RFC 4949 defines a network session as a persistent but normally temporary association between a user agent, typically a client, and another process, typically a server. That association can continue across multiple data exchanges and even multiple connections.

So, a session is not necessarily the same thing as a transport connection. The Session layer is a useful way to describe session-management functions, but it should not be treated as a rigid boundary in every implementation. RFC 4949 notes that the functions of OSI layers 5, 6 and 7 can be combined in one software unit. It also notes that TCP includes some services associated with Layer 5, such as connection termination, while other session and presentation functions may be implemented in application protocols.
Does TCP/IP have a Session layer?
No separately defined Session layer exists in the Internet Protocol Suite. That does not mean session-related work is absent: some functions may be part of TCP or handled by application protocols. The distinction is between the OSI model’s conceptual layers and how an actual protocol architecture groups and implements functions.
A standards example: vehicle diagnostics
Vehicle diagnostics provide a specific example of standards mapping services to OSI layers. ISO 13400-4:2016 maps diagnostic session-layer services to ISO 14229-2. In the same mapping, ISO 13400-2 covers transport (Layer 4) and network (Layer 3), while ISO 13400-3 covers physical and data-link services (Layers 1 and 2).

What the Layer 5 label does—and does not—tell you
- It tells you: the discussion uses the OSI model, where Layer 5 is the Session layer.
- It may indicate: a function that organizes or maintains a session between application processes.
- It does not tell you: that there is one protocol called “the Layer 5 protocol,” or that a TCP/IP stack implements a distinct Session layer.
A May 1993 informational RFC by R. Housley, written in the context of security labels, states: “The Session Layer cannot be used to meet the requirements of intermediate systems because intermediate systems, by definition, do not process protocols above the Network Layer.” This is a point about intermediate systems and that security-label context, not a general definition of the Session layer.
