Orion Backgammon lets you verify the dice in a completed server game: it publishes a cryptographic commitment before play, reveals the seed after the game, and provides a browser verifier to recompute the rolls. That can show whether rolls were changed after the commitment; it does not establish that every part of the app or game is fair.
How Orion’s dice check works
Orion describes this as a commitment-and-reveal process. Before the first roll, the server commits to a secret seed by publishing its SHA-256 hash. The hash is intended to bind the server to that seed without exposing it during play. After the game, Orion reveals the seed so the rolls can be checked. Orion’s official site and its fairness explanation describe the mechanism.

Before play: a hash commits to the seed
A SHA-256 hash is a compact fingerprint of data. Orion says it publishes the seed’s hash before the first roll. Afterward, a player can hash the revealed seed and compare the result with the pre-game commitment. If they match, the revealed seed is consistent with the one committed to before play.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDuring play: rolls are derived from the seed
Orion says each roll is generated with HMAC-SHA256 using the secret seed and the roll’s position. Its explanation says the game state, score, doubling cube, and player are not inputs to this calculation. The roll position matters because it distinguishes one roll from another in the sequence.

After play: reveal and recompute
Once the game ends, Orion reveals the seed. Enter the game ID in the official verifier; Orion says the check runs in the player’s browser and recomputes the game’s rolls. You can compare those results with the rolls recorded in the match.
What a successful check does—and does not—show
A matching commitment and recomputed roll sequence are evidence against Orion changing the dice after publishing the commitment. Orion’s verifier describes the boundary clearly: “Provable fairness proves the dice were not tampered with, which is a narrower and more honest claim than ‘the game is fair’ in general.” That is Orion’s characterization, not an independent certification.

The check does not prove that the seed was produced through a truly random physical process, that every part of the app or server behaves fairly, or that the deployed system has been independently audited. The official pages describe the design, but no independent audit report specific to Orion’s deployed verification process is established here.

How to decide whether this answers your concern
If your question is “is this app rigged?”, Orion’s verifier gives you a way to test the narrower claim that the dice in a completed server game match a seed committed to before play. It is more informative than relying solely on an operator’s assurance, but it is not a general verdict on the game or service.

- For an online match, look for a commitment published before play, a seed revealed afterward, and a way to recompute the rolls yourself.
- For a physical game, players can see the dice being rolled directly. That visibility answers a different trust question and does not verify an Orion online match.
What Orion is
Orion Backgammon is published by Arthea, LLC and made by Arthea GameLab. Its official page says it is free to play on iPhone, iPad, and Android. The game uses the familiar setup of fifteen checkers, two dice, and a doubling cube. Those details describe the app; they are not independent evidence about the fairness of its dice.
