“Origami battery” is a name for experimental energy-storage designs built to tolerate folding, bending, twisting or stretching—not a paper craft or a standard battery that is safe to fold. Researchers have demonstrated several distinct approaches, including folded lithium-ion cells, foldable zinc-air batteries and stretchable designs. The reported results belong to specific prototypes and tests; the reviewed sources do not establish a consumer product for sale.
What makes a battery “origami”?
In an origami-inspired battery, the cell’s structure is designed to accommodate deformation. Folding the geometry does not make an ordinary rigid battery safe to bend: forcing a conventional cell to fold can damage it. The term also covers more than one chemistry or mechanism, so the examples below should not be treated as interchangeable products.

What the 2014 origami lithium-ion study showed
The 2014 study is a clear example of how the folding pattern and the electrode materials work together. The researchers slurry-coated electrodes onto paper current collectors, packaged the device in standard materials, and folded it into a Miura pattern. Their approach used rigid origami so the patterned materials would not undergo large strain.

The authors, led by Zeming Song and Hanqing Jiang, wrote in the paper’s abstract: “Here we demonstrate an origami lithium-ion battery that can be deformed at an unprecedented high level, including folding, bending and twisting.” That wording describes their reported demonstration; it should not be read as a present-day ranking against every flexible-battery design.

The capacity result also depends on which current collector was used. In the paper’s linear-deformation cycling test, the conventional-material origami battery lost about 10% of its capacity after 100 cycles, while the carbon-nanotube-coated-paper-current-collector version showed steady capacity. Those findings apply to the study’s designs and test, not to all origami batteries.
How to interpret performance claims
- Keep the test attached to the number. The 100-cycle capacity result concerns linear deformation in the 2014 study; the 45,000-cycle result concerns a zigzag-like design folded at a reported angle of 130°.
- Do not conflate energy-density comparisons. The 2019 record compares its zigzag design with a conventional stacking cell. That reported comparison does not show that every foldable cell matches a conventional cell.
- Distinguish stretching from folding. The ASU result describes a kirigami-inspired stretchable design and its extension, not a Miura-folded lithium-ion battery.
- Distinguish generation from storage. The moisture-powered fabric device is a separate moisture-electric research approach, even though the university describes it as a battery.
The sources include peer-reviewed studies, a university research record and university news reports. They describe particular prototypes and tests, not standardized head-to-head comparisons across architectures.

Can you buy an origami battery—or fold a regular one?
The reviewed sources document research demonstrations but do not establish consumer availability, production scale, certification or a retail product called an origami battery. They also give no basis for treating an ordinary battery as foldable: do not bend or fold a conventional cell. The experimental designs work by engineering a particular cell structure for a particular kind of deformation, not by making all batteries flexible.
