Browser favorites—also called bookmarks—are saved links to webpages. Keep them useful by removing links you no longer need, grouping the rest into clear folders, and making a backup before a major cleanup or browser switch. The exact menus vary by browser, but the basic approach works across them.
What browser favorites are—and where to find them
Favorites and bookmarks are the same kind of saved link; Microsoft Edge uses the term “Favorites.” They give you a way to return to webpages without searching for them again. Depending on the browser, you may open them from a bookmarks or favorites menu, a toolbar or bar, or a management page.

For example, Edge provides access through its favorites bar and favorites menu. If you do not see a saved page where you expect it, open the browser’s bookmark manager or favorites manager and look through its folders.
How to organize favorites without making more work
Start with a quick audit rather than building a complicated filing system. Remove links that are duplicates, no longer work, or no longer serve a purpose. Keep useful links, then group them into a small set of folders that reflect how you look for them. Possible folder names include Work, Learning, Household and Read Later; choose labels that make sense to you.

Use folders for the main structure
Put each saved page in the folder where you would naturally look for it. Keep folder names short and specific enough to distinguish one group from another. If a folder becomes difficult to scan, divide it into a few meaningful subfolders rather than creating a long chain of nested categories.
Add tags when one folder is not enough
Firefox supports tags as well as folders. Tags can help you find a page by more than one theme—for example, a saved page could be filed in a work folder and tagged with a topic. Tags are useful when categories overlap; folders alone are simpler if you usually think of each link as belonging in one place.

How to find and maintain saved links
Organization only helps if you can retrieve a link when you need it. Try locating a few saved pages by folder, tag or the browser’s bookmark manager. If you cannot predict where you put an item, adjust the folder structure or labels before adding more categories.

Browser managers also let you maintain individual entries. Chrome’s bookmark tools support finding, editing, sorting and moving bookmarks. Edge supports sorting or reordering favorites, editing them and deleting them. Use these controls to correct a title or URL, move a link to a better folder, or remove an item that has become irrelevant.

Back up favorites before cleanup or a browser switch
Before a large reorganization or migration, make a copy of your bookmarks if your browser offers an export option. Firefox documents exporting bookmarks to an HTML file for backup or transfer. That file can also be used when moving bookmarks between browsers.
Chrome documents importing bookmarks and settings, including a route for importing an HTML file exported from another browser. An HTML bookmark export should not be treated as a complete browser migration: the cited transfer guidance covers bookmarks, not passwords, extensions or every browser setting. Check the import and export instructions for your browser and platform because menus and workflows can change.
