Oregon State University researchers say a new porous material called BVR-X captured carbon dioxide from a highly humid factory-emissions test stream. The report describes a promising laboratory result—not proof that factory steam is converted into a product or that the material is ready for industrial use.
What the BVR-X report says
KXL Northwest News reported on October 5, 2026, that researchers at Oregon State University (OSU) in Corvallis developed BVR-X, a metal-organic framework, or MOF, for capturing carbon dioxide from humid factory flue emissions. The report says the material directs water and CO2 into different regions of its nanosized pores, helping it continue capturing CO2 despite moisture. The description of the material and its performance comes from KXL Northwest News.

The headline’s “factory steam” wording refers to moisture in flue emissions. The report does not say that steam itself is converted into a capture product. It describes separating CO2 from a humid gas stream.
What was tested—and what the figures mean
KXL says BVR-X captured CO2 from a highly humid stream containing 4% CO2 and maintained performance through dozens of capture-and-release cycles. The 4% figure is the CO2 concentration in the reported test stream; it is not a capture efficiency or a measure of how much CO2 the material can hold.

The report does not provide the experimental tables or key measures needed to assess performance quantitatively: capture capacity, selectivity, regeneration energy, test duration, or comparative results against other materials. It therefore does not establish how BVR-X would perform with a particular factory’s emissions or what operating costs might look like.
Why humidity matters for carbon capture
MOFs are crystalline materials made from metal ions and organic linker molecules. Their nanosized pores can adsorb gases. Oregon State’s December 2024 overview explains this general structure while discussing a different copper-based MOF, mCBMOF-1, whose CO2 uptake improved after ammonia exposure. Moisture can interfere with some capture materials or mean emissions must be dried before treatment. The BVR-X report’s central claim is that water and CO2 occupy different pore regions, allowing the material to keep capturing CO2 under the humid conditions tested. The available account does not provide enough mechanistic detail or data to independently assess that explanation.
What the result does not establish
- Industrial readiness: The reported tests do not establish performance at factory scale or in a deployed capture system.
- Commercial availability: KXL says the researchers filed a patent application. An application is not a granted patent, licensed product, or evidence that BVR-X is available for purchase.
- Independent confirmation: The underlying Angewandte Chemie article and patent record were not available in the cited reporting, and independent replication is not established there.
- Comparative advantage: Without matched test conditions and performance data, the report is not enough to rank BVR-X against other capture materials.
To make a meaningful technical comparison, readers would need results under the same humidity and CO2 concentration, along with capacity, selectivity, regeneration energy, cycling durability, test duration, and demonstration scale.

Which OSU is involved?
This story concerns Oregon State University in Corvallis, not The Ohio State University in Columbus. The two institutions have separate carbon-related research stories. Ohio State reported a distinct 2026 process that uses CO2 and industrial byproducts to produce hydrogen and calcite; its report says further research is needed to evaluate larger-scale use.
